Plus we talk a little bit about pigments and what brings plants their colors 😊💜 Let's hang out and talk about our plants :)

    I myself have experienced the difference in the growth of my young plants with the netting on and after I remove it. I notice that there can be factors that determine when the plants don't thrive with neither the plastic or the felt like material versus the times when the plant does not show any issues with the caging material. I understand why growers and nurseries set their plugs up with their young plants. It helps when they need to move the plants around to keep the roots stable and my understanding is that their tiny young roots can have nutritional support focused in the area within the " caged" plug. Then I believe there can be a point of growth when it can hinder development. Then i find that certain plant roots do not thrive if there is not enough air flow or water ebb and flow around those roots. Those plants seem to have an uphill battle with good development of petioles and foilage. I then carefully remove the caging material and replant the pothos or whatever back into the same pot and enviroment the plant's growth is markedly improved.

      To be honest, one of my Ficus Benjamina was really unwell, it always dropped leaves even tho he was in the best spot in the house. Then I found this weird sponge in the middle. It was extremely moist, the soil was completely dry but this thing was just dripping wet. I removed it carefully and now he is thriving.

    I personally have had plants start to die and I had no idea why until I found the plugs. The roots inside the plug had started to rot, and few roots had grown out the plug. Within 2 weeks of completely removing the plug the plant started growing like crazy. It finally sized up and I never had issues again. That was the only thing I changed. I checked my other plants and sure enough, 5 had plugs and those were the ones that weren't sizing up. They weren't dying, they just did absolutly nothing. Within 2 weeks they started growing once the plug was gone. Not all my plant with plugs had issues. But the ones who did have issues really had issues. The plugs were a very tight felt fabric type ring around the roots. I think they were just being smothered, either by the fabric itself or the water retention it caused atound the roots. The foam and other types of plug are probably better. The mesh ones I've found on my plants seemed to make no difference. But man did the fabric ones cause problems for me. Anyway, I hope you feel better! Head infections of any kind is aweful.

    I think when people refer to “death plugs” they are referring to the plugs made from plastic 🤔 I’ve only come across plastic plugs once but it was brutal ☹️ I hope you get to the bottom of your health issue soon 😀🇨🇦

      Oh my gosh!! I have never seen a plastic plug before!! Are they hard like a net pot? That DOES sound like it would be bad for a plant! Maybe all the places I’ve worked at somehow sourced from nurseries that didn’t use those. Never found one in a Home Depot or Lowe’s plant either, just cloth and sometimes sponge. I’m definitely gonna be on the lookout for plastic ones now though. Thanks for pointing this out!! Sorry you had to find one!
      Thanks so much for watching and the well wishes, have a great week Linda 😊💜✨🌿

      Yes, indeed. In Europe we get a lot of plastic net plugs and that’s a bad thing. Especially for the Alocasia corns and the bigger anthurium roots. 😵‍💫

      I’ve bought many plants and seen many death plugs it’s sad what some farmers do they put plugs so plants can die and store buys more then you buy more it’s a sad cycle a lot of people do that’s why I always check my pants when I buy them

      I consider the cloth ones death plugs too, if on a plant that the roots are tiny and fibrous the roots have a tough time getting through imo, then you remove it and rip whatever roots did make it through off.

    • @mwatson4970
      @mwatson4970 3 місяці тому

      @@reallybigplant I agree about the plastic ones. See them on almost all the aglaonema I buy in box stores over the last year. They often lead to rot if left on, but also the fibrous ones (not net, like a cotton gauze fabric) can create similar issue as they kind of break down, are hard to fully detach, and aren't easy to sep for thin root plants like someone else said. Seen more of those on iresines and I think a pilea, so had to get that off.

I separated them about a year later and now the ficus elastica is taller than me (F5’2”), the thanksgiving cactus overflows a 12” terra cotta pot and just started growing some flower buds, and the little palm survived my kitty (rip Barbara) and finally bloomed this winter!

    So glad you updated us on the large money tree you purchases and the smaller ones you already unbraided. Many times u tubers say they will update you about some plant, but then they never do. I was very pleasantly surprised. About the death plugs: I have discovered one once that was made out of plastic and I do believe it would have hindered the plant's growth eventually. I do agree though most of the time they slowly dissolve into the soil.

      Oh no!! I’ve been wondering how your cat palm was doing, sorry it didn’t work out 😅
      I had no idea that there were plastic plugs!!!! I guess I’ve been extremely lucky in never coming across them. Maybe they’re less common in the cities I’ve lived somehow…🤔 or maybe I don’t often buy the types of plants that would be given plastic?? I’m baffled I’ve never seen this. Seems like a terrible choice to do it that way! Thanks for sharing, I’m gonna be on the lookout for plastic now!

    I think the main issue with the "death" plugs is trying to remove them as the roots grow through and tangle with them. For that reason, I choose to remove them immediately for convenience later.

    • @reallybigplant
      @reallybigplant  2 місяці тому +1

      This is a good call! If you immediately remove them when the roots are still small, it can help avoid problems for sure as long as the plant can handle the transfer at that stage. I agree that once the root system grows in and around the plug it makes it way harder to get it out without basically cutting off all the roots. Thanks for pointing this out!💜🌿✨

  • @jocybenson2591
    @jocybenson2591 2 місяці тому

    I truly don’t get how people get spider mites or pest on so many plants omfg this is why I ALWAYS repot my plants when I get them. I’ve been collecting for years and repotting them as soon as I get them has helped so much. With checking the roots and taking them out of that wet peat moss they’re in. And also, one reason those are called “death plug” is bc of the way they hold moisture as well. Plants are grown in green house which help the soil dry out much faster than they do in our regular homes. I don’t follow that “let ur plant acclimate before repotting” rule. Like, yeah let the plant get use to ur home THANK go disturb its roots??? lmao just get it done all at once, imo. I’ve never had a plant go into complete shock and die. And again, I don’t deal with pest.

    Love to watch your videos and your little Pom who always makes me smile. My plants have never had spider mites, just scale and more commonly, mealies, so I was filing the curly edge advice away. My experience with Frankenpots has always been with succulents and has always been bad; I was nodding when you discussed the store putting dying plants together. Probably not always true, however. Best of luck with your health!

      I amend my judgment about the store potting the plants together! It may have been just a coincidence that the plant I had seen declining and the one I got both had thaum xanadu in them. Because in the 2 weeks since making this video, I’ve been seeing way more combo pots at multiple grocery stores, so maybe it’s the local growers around my area.

    i don't like "death plugs" cause sometimes they will be too crowded and it makes it super hard to separate. that name is pretty dramatic tho lol
    hope you feel better soon! 💚

    I love a good existential plant video ☺️ So sorry you're not feeling well and also that it's some kind of mystery disease. I can relate to having to focus on plants and the little good things. Hope you'll feel back to your normal smiling self soon! Love from northern Sweden (where the grass is still brown and there were snowflakes yesterday 😢)

      I hope you get some warm days soon 😊 have a lovely week!💜

    One of those plants in the mixed trash plant pot looks like a black bat flower plant, hard to tell, here in bc Canada they will exchange or refund plants
    I dislike The cloth death plugs for plants with thinner roots, they have a tough time pushing through the cloth then when you try to remove it so they can expand, you rip out whatever roots did get through. Plants with more robust roots deal with them better
    Love the info about the colours of leaves when the chlorophyll dies off, ❤

    I had death plugs in my watermelon peperomia and orchud olants and they both died. Probably depends on what kind of plant has them. Not that they couldn't have survived with them but for me i rhink they made it harder to get the watering right. Hope you feel better soon!

    • @reallybigplant
      @reallybigplant  3 місяці тому +1

      Hmmm you’re totally right! I don’t often get peperomias so I don’t have as much experience with them. I also usually wouldn’t repot peperomias while working in plant shops because they tend to be a bit fragile so I haven’t looked in their soil too often. Sorry to hear this has been your experience! Sounds like it would definitely be beneficial to remove the plugs from those plants. Thanks so much for sharing!💜🌿✨💕 I hope you have a great week thanks for watching!😊✨

    I bought a couple different aglionemas from hd in the typical $20 ceramic pots Costa uses….. anyway it had like a plastic plug. I took them off during repot and both plants died. The holes were definitely big enough for the roots to escape but i fell for the hype

  • @khloerivera7208
    @khloerivera7208 3 місяці тому

    The plastic ones won’t harm then but I had plants with thick thick fiber and roots couldn’t go through and had rot cause too much moisture under and trapped

    Hello! New subscriber here just found you. Question: why you would keep your plant in the same pot and medium? Most likely the Miranta is being choked alive from the heavy soil they used. Good luck!

    Question
    I have a marantha that has webbing towards the base. I can't see any spider mites but it doesn't look like spider Web. Could it be old webbing? Can spider mites die off on their own? Should I be worried? The plant seems completely healthy and happy

    • @reallybigplant
      @reallybigplant  2 місяці тому

      I would not worry!💜 It could totally be just normal spider webs or residual uninhabited webbing. I would give it a rinse and wipe off the webbing if you are able and check again in a few weeks to see if anything has changed. But it sounds like you don’t need to be concerned if the plant isn’t showing signs of damage 😊 I also have gotten webbing on my plants that is not from spider mites but looks very similar, must be from some other kind of spiders. If it’s on the soil surface as well, sometimes there is mold or mycelial fungus that can form that also kind of looks like mite webbing and can just be washed off or removed during a repot and usually doesn’t become problematic (it also usually looks more like clumps of hair instead of webbing so you’d probably notice the difference if that was it)
      Hope this helps! 💜🌿🌱✨💕

    Death plugs with mesh or worse plastic mesh is horrible for plants with very fine roots like most Hoyas or cacti, their roots have extreme difficulty breaking through the plugs. For plants with chunky roots, it's rarely an issue, unless people overwater (like me lol)

    Вітання з України ! В вас гарний канал ,мені дуже подобається. Я виводила павутинного кліща собачим шампунем від кліщів і бліх. Розводила шампунь в воді і оприскувала рослини . А ще краще їх в цій воді купати . Треба горщик обмотати плівкою ( що б земля не висипалась) а потім занурити листям в воду і добре пополоскати . Тоді вода з шампунем всюди попадає у всі пазухи листя . І все . мені вистачило одного разу помити і павутинний кліщ зник !
