This Thanksgiving, we chose to escape the hustle and bustle of daily life and headed to North Carolina to celebrate the Hmong New Year. It was a chance to focus on family and simplicity, leaving behind the stress of planning and cooking for the holiday. Our journey to Connelly Springs took 3.5 hours, and upon arriving at our cozy Airbnb, we were immediately impressed.
Nestled on a private lot with ample parking, the home looked small from the outside but was surprisingly spacious and welcoming inside. There was no trace of a musty smell-just a clean, fresh atmosphere. The space was meticulously maintained, with crisp white sheets, plenty of fresh towels, and all the essentials for cooking. It felt like the perfect retreat. For dinner, I prepared ribs, sausages, and stir-fried green beans. The evening was spent in laughter and relaxation as the kids played games, and we all unwound from our day.
Friday morning began early with excitement. We dressed in traditional Hmong clothing and set out for the Hmong New Year festivities. Arriving at 9 a.m., we found a great parking spot and enjoyed the calm before the crowds gathered. The entrance fee was just $5 per person-a small price for such a rich cultural experience.
The celebration was alive with vibrant clothing vendors, tantalizing food stands, and performances showcasing Hmong folk songs and traditional dances. There were also sports competitions and a lively pageant. However, I couldn’t help but notice how traditions have evolved. The once-common sight of young people tossing balls to court one another was absent-a reminder of the cultural elements we must work to preserve.
Despite this, the day was fulfilling. We wandered through the event, browsing clothes and food, watching performances, and reconnecting with familiar faces from Georgia. I finally found two beautiful Hmong hats I had been wanting, and at just $20 each, they were a steal. We also picked up some fresh fruit to enjoy later.
As the cold weather settled in, we made our way back to the Airbnb for dinner and a peaceful evening. The warmth of family, culture, and simplicity made this Thanksgiving unforgettable. It was a perfect blend of tradition and relaxation, reminding us to cherish the moments that truly matter.

The house was awesome. I like the mix of modern and contemporary/country. Well that’s what I would call it. The festivals that y’all go to are amazing. Thanks for sharing your Thanksgiving.
