@@CrispyProu were correct turn left came after midnight, off topic but capaldi is my favorite doctor ever so far, I’ve only watched hartnell, throughton, pertwee, eccelstone( I don’t know how to spell his last name), tennant, smith and capaldi all the way thru, I’ve started on Tom baker but it’s getting repetitive and I’ve dropped off and I’ve only watched thru toms first season all the way thru
As a child I didn't understand it and just got bored watching it. Given a large part of the audience is children it's no unreasonable for that to be the case at least for them, and any parents not paying enough attention
I think River was the best re-occurring character in new who. However, sometimes I wish they didn't over sexualise her as she was much more enjoyable in the Silence in the library/Forest of the dead two-parter.
I feel like "School Renunion" was actually a really interesting exploration of the psychology of jealousy. Jealousy is often considered an inherently negative emotion and you can only have it for bad reasons, but a lot of the time it's a manifestation of insecurity and communication problems. Jealousy isn't the problem, but the way one responds to it can be. Rose didn't feel threatened by the fact that the Doctor had other companions. Rose herself had been co-companions with Jack at one point. She felt threatened by the realization that the Doctor leaves his companions against their will. The Doctor left Jack because of the regeneration and the low likelihood that Jack was still alive, but he was also a timetraveller himself. Both Rose and Sarah were completely at the Doctor's whim. Rose wasn't just jealous of Sarah and more shocked by the realization that the Doctor left Sarah on Earth and disappeared, even though she wanted to stay with him. She feels insecure about Sarah being a "better" companion than her, and she had the added pressure of "what if he decides that he likes Sarah better and chooses to leave me instead?" The episode is about Rose realizing that if the Doctor decided to leave for good, she couldn't do anything about it. She's scared of becoming Sarah, and that manifests as jealousy. It isn't just a shallow cat fight that came out of nowhere. There were believable emotions behind it and I think it's unfair to dismiss the whole thing as "Rose is jealous and needs to get over it."
Plus I mean it's not like the issue was just "Rose doesn't understand the Doctor had other friends", I completely understand the issue of "I'm some nobody from London and this amazing man has swept me off my feet to go on adventures... but it turns out he's done the exact same thing with other people before, so it means I'm not nearly as special as he made me feel" in addition to the points you raised - that the Doctor will just get rid of companions after all this time together. If he was such good friends with Sarah Jane but just dumped her one day, it makes sense Rose would be worried that the same thing would happen to her. Imagine if the most impossibly wonderful thing ever happened to you and then you got smacked with the realization that it could end at literally any moment just because the guy didn't want you around anymore, as well as the realization that he's done this several times already.
Also, like you said, it's important to see what one does with their jealousy and in that episode, Rose eventually befriends Sarah Jane so it's a good point for her character actually!
What you described is basically jealousy. Some people don't like that people feel it. Or don't care that it's a legitimate set of concerns, because they only care about the surface appearances of it. But yeah, it's not like Rose did something horrible in response to it, she just expressed herself, perhaps a bit too passive aggressively.
@@alicequinn505 uhhh...yea. My comment was specifically about how the episode addresses the complexities of jealousy. I literally use the term "psychology of jealousy" in my first sentence. You basically just explained my comment back to me. I'm not sure how you managed to do that without realizing that you were doing that. Weird.
I think every time companions are introduced to previous companions there is a mix of jealousy and the feeling of missing out on the fun. As far as caring, I think the doctor has rarely had preferences between companions. As I see it, the writers have done a great job of balancing ad making them loved as individuals, even Adric. I almost feel bad for singling him out.
My thought process for the last one was funny. I spent several minutes trying to decide whether A Good Man Goes To War or The Angels Take Manhattan was the answer, and then I thought about The Pandorica Opens and immediately went "Oh, it's definitely that one".
I've never been good at remembering names, so all I could think was "the one with the space lady with the eyepatch". I still don't know if that's right or not I now know I am not even close
That is definitely one problem I have with the Matt Smith era is that the finales try too hard to be "bigger" and ""better"" than the last. Like ok I get it the multiverse is ending and there are 5 million villains... Again
Here are my guesses. 1. My Guess: S1 E11 | Boom Town (2005) Why: I'd already seen the short, BUT, while watching the short, I did guess the episode mainly (if not only) because of the mentions of it being just a fun episode, and especially because of the mention of the episode being set at Cardiff Bay. Plus, like Ellie mentioned, Boom Town connect back to a previous two parter, as OP mentioned. CORRECT 2. My Guess: S2 CHRISTMAS SPECIAL | The Runaway Bride (2006) Why: OP said 'Looking forward to season 3" implying that that was the next piece of main Doctor Who media to come next, on top of that was OP saying "whoever his companion is" which implies that this companion is new. Catherine Tate made her first appearance as Donna Noble in The Runaway Bride. Plus, no many people like this episode (as fa as I know) and it's a fairly comedic episode. CORRECT 3. My Guess: S2 E3 | School Reunion (2006) Why: OP mentions that this episode helps to bridge the gap between modern and classic Doctor Who, and The School Reunion has the re-appearance of a basic Doctor Who character. Also, in this episode, Rose is acting very selfish as she's mad at The Doctor for having a companion before her. CORRECT 4. My Guess: S4 E10 | Midnight (2008) Why: This is the only episode (so far) where Donna (played by Catherine Tate) is the companion, but she barely appears in the episode. Catherine Tate did appear in two scenes in the episode, one at the beginning, and one at the end. And while I can't say that I agree, or disagree, since I haven't watched Midnight in a while, I can see how someone might get bored watching multiple characters be stuck in a small space for 40ish minutes, and find it repetitive. CORRECT 5. My Guess: S6 E7 | A Good Man Goes To War (2011) Why: River song returns, we get a lot of Amy/Rory storyline in this episode, and the events of said episode are quite big and chaotic. INCORRECT 4/5
"Midnight" was pretty easy to guess from how Donna is barely in it and the hint with the pun "repetitive"😁. I actually like it. It makes me feel a sense of dread and the open end makes it even scarier
Back in the 1980s Doctor Who was shown on many PBS stations. Before I ever saw an episode I saw a blurb in the local paper's tv listings for the episode on that night. It read, "the doctor resolves a diplomatic dispute." From that blurb I concluded that Doctor Who was a boring real life drama.
6:23 It's not if it's done poorly, which honestly a lot of Doctor Who episodes had this problem, particularly after the 10th Doctor. Not that I didn't enjoy the 11th Doctor, but once Steven Moffat winded down his involvement and Chibnall took over... eek. So many bad episodes and plot threads and failed attempts at making everything seem big and spectacular and complicated. It drove the show into the ground eventually, but I was long gone by then.
I guessed a couple but I can never remember titles so it was just going "the Sarah Jane one!" Or "the slitheen one but not the first one the sequel one"
1: Correct 2: Incorrect (Had no clue so i just guessed Doomsday) 3: Correct 4: Correct 5: Incorrect (Was stuck between The Pandorica Opens and A Good Man Goes To War. Chose wrongly)
Midnight may not have Donna but it does still have Merlin Got every one almost immediately except for Runaway Bride, thought it could have been Love and Monsters since Peter Kay
“Geow up and act uour age” rose was a 19 year old in a minimal wage job lobong with her mum in love with a amazong man ofcause she may act jelous at first she got over it its her character sebelopment in episode
I don't know about this no bad River Song episodes thing. I remember not liking The Time of Angels. Just a bunch of unnecessary extra steps put on the Angels, that were so good the first time because it was just so simple. And River is back, I guess.
I missed the same two as Ellie and I’m annoyed because in both cases I thought the review was more accurate to the episode I picked than the correct answer. Love and Monsters in season 2 was incredibly silly and stupid left a whole bunch of destruction in the doctor’s wake. Time of the Angels/Flesh and Stone was River’s first return, was the next step after the start in the Amy/Rory arc and it expanded the weeping angels lore a bit but also in a way that would lead them to lose the unique presence they had in Blink.
Seriously, that reviewer didn’t like Midnight? Granted, it’s one of those episodes that leave you feeling depressed and hopeless about the human race, precisely because you know that’s how most people would react in that situation, but damn, it’s a great piece of writing. And I laugh every time I think about it, I was surprised when I rewatched it (back in the day before streaming) and realized it was written by RTD. I was so sure it had been Moffat.
Is it me, or is it weird that all the IMDB comments were made today, at 6:00 AM? Pretty sure the first one is from another host of Who Culture. Actually, that makes it a wee bit funnier.
I made them all look like facebook posts haha. The ones on Imdb, I had to remove some sentences in their reviews for being too spoilery and obvious haha

To be fair, it works well as character development, but only if you watch it in order from River's point of view.
