New England's First Conflict - The Pequot War, Part 1: Origins
Вставка
- Опубліковано 7 вер 2024
- An educational video recounting the origins of the Pequot War, a conflict that changed New England forever. An important chapter in American history, it is rarely covered extensively by schools. Please enjoy, and feel free to ask me any questions about the story! It can be overwhelming at times, but is extremely exciting :)

AUTHOR’S NOTE
This video acts as a ‘sequel’ to the First Thanksgiving, taking place in the decade after the famous feast. More important players are introduced, such as John Winthrop Sr. and Uncas of the Mohegans, but Plymouth colony is still alive.
Yet again, I was obliged to leave out many details due to time constraints, but please feel free to leave a comment asking about anything that may not have been clear in the video!

I love how fair and unbiased this stuff is compared to what we learn in school
There are no victims and no criminals, just humans
@@vincenzorutigliano5435 humans can be both and talking about it is not simply hating on the past, but analyzing history to learn from it.
@@angeliparraguirre7329 I get what you say but we can't read history with the same lens that we see the present.
@@vincenzorutigliano5435 i didn't mean the same lens. We know times change and so things can becone, dare i say, relative.
Everyone's ancestors are guilty. The woke right now are just clambering for clout by conveniently choosing a good and bad guy
I’ve been waiting for a whole year. The content is so good I really hope this isn’t an annual thing. Please.
So sorry for the long wait! I will be releasing them more quickly than annually, I promise! I already have started the research for my next vid :)
Uncivil History awesome, keep it up. I’ll be here for it.
@@UncivilHistory I love your videos, they give good insight to U.S. history that was glossed over. Sorry to ask, but is the reason why it takes a long time is b/c the individual histories and accounts are hard to track down?....essentially you're becoming an historian by trade.
@@matpikachu They are not necessarily hard to track down, but I try to read as many primary and secondary sources as possible before starting the script. So there are MANY reasons it takes a long time, for example: research, script, storyboard, and last but definitely NOT least, the actual animating :)
@@UncivilHistory Oh, ok. Thanks, keep up the great work! (I have an education channel of my own and I know it can be a rough ride)
I’d kill to have a Game of Thrones style show following the true story of native Americans and early European colonizers
"kill"? I see what you did there. =D
And tell the truth starting in 1619 not 1776!!!!!!!!!!!!!?
@@larry1824 You're absolutely right that it is important we as history educators tell the story of the Portuguese pirate ship that captured enslaved Africans from Spain and sold them to the Jamestown colony in 1619. We also need to tell the story of how the Atlantic Slave Trade began in the 1400s before then. But we also need to not get carried away. The Portuguese Pirates and English tobacco planters in 1619 had absolutely zero thought about starting a new country. All the pirates cared about was collecting the money and sailing out in search of their next victims. The English planters were still loyal to English King James I, and made that clear in the first meeting of the Virginia House of Burgesses that same year. In no way did anyone involved in the inhumane transfer of trafficked humans in 1619 think they were starting a nation called the United States. However, the delegates of the 2nd Continental Congress 157 years later in 1776 absolutely believed and knew they were starting a new nation called the United States. Now, we absolutely need to tell how Washington could have ended all slavery in the new United States by just putting it in a letter to all the states in 1783, after the War for Independence had ended. He could have again while president from 1789-1797. President Adams could have as well, since he and Federalists from northern states controlled the White House, the Senate, and the House of Representatives. Heck! Jefferson, though famously owning slaves openly declared it evil and a contradiction--and he was president for another 8 years from 1801-1809! There's no excuse for any of them to have not ended slavery when they could have. But, I don't think we need to declare that America started in 1619, because nobody in 1619 was even thinking about founding a new nation at that time. What are your thoughts on this?
@@larry1824 Hopefully you're not referring to the racist narrative of 1619 that was quickly debunked. Always tell the truth with history. The problem is, most people who see themselves as "victims of history" don't like their own 'villainous' history.
Am I late
the quality of the art is AMAZING
Tdlr: Both the Europeans and the Natives had rival nations even if they were the same race (English and Dutch, Pequot and Narragansett) and had alliances with each other but some of them were broken off because of political interest. Both the Europeans and the Natives had ulterior motives and played political games. The Natives were intelligent and has their own interests and schemes in mind. It's not always as simple as the "bad, evil Europeans" and "poor, defenseless, clueless Natives".
I love this please don't make me wait a whole year though lol
Pre-US and Canadian North American history is so fascinating. I wish more of it was taught in schools.
Incredibly well versed, balanced, and suspenseful historical commentary. I hope that you will continue to be encouraged to produce more of this well researched history so succinctly summarized. Bravo. Keep up the good work.
Thank you so much for your kind words! I promise more is to come. I am so happy you like my style and I will do my best in future videos!
Ayeeeee finally! Glad to see a new vid man!

Omg I've waited exactly one year since the last thanksgiving!!! I love you guys
Thx
i love the detail of the englishman from endicott's arrival at block island - the soldier who got shot at, the arrow ricocheting off the helmet. there's a wonderful source my girlfriend showed me of an englishman fighting with his wife about whether or not to wear a helmet (imagine today, "you were right, dear, it was a good thing i brought my coat because it started raining, should've listened to you)
Yes! Haha wow I am so happy someone caught that! Yes, this is Captain Underhill who only wore his helmet because his wife insisted! He writes 2 full pages about it in his memoirs, and he also mentions the man next to him who gets shot through the neck. Luckily, his stiff collar kept the arrow from hitting anything vital, so he survived :) I am so happy you caught that!
@@UncivilHistory it's such wonderful little episode of history - illustrates so much humanity between Captain and Mistress Underhill. You can easily imagine how that interaction played out between the two in their home before Underhill joined Endicott
keep up the good work! I'm amazed at the detail and scholarship that goes into your work ! I used to be a pilgrim at plimoth plantation, so i'm pleased to see your respect for the material and history
@@louissparks76 Thank you, I will continue to do my best! That's awesome that you were a pilgrim, not many people have delved as deeply as you have in this history, I am sure!

Thank you so much for uploading. The content is great!
Thank you! More is coming :)
Im sure youre a busy guy. But i share the sentiments of many here. The vids youve made so far are easily the most digestable history lessons ive seen yet. Better than anything ive seen in school.
Wow, thank you so much! Yes I am quite busy but this is my passion so I want to be better with my speed and upload more often. I am so happy you like these videos, and comments like yours are what keep me going!
The Narraganset got a raw deal, their demise would strengthen other tribes resolve to not capitulate to the Europeans. Tecumseh mentioned them in his Pan-Indian unification speech to a host of other chiefs years later.
Please do Little Turtle’s war at some point.
Yes they did! More on Miantonomo and the fate of the Narragansett in Part 3..I would love to eventually get to Little Turtle; first Metacom and then on to the 18th century!
I just discovered this video as I was trying to piece together my Puritain and Native American ancestry before Thanksgiving. My ancestor travelled on the Old Connecticut Trail from Boston to Hartford. Maybe we should call it Forgiveness Day. It's a sad history.
Quality > Quantity
Thank you. I'm glad you appreciate this :)
History like this is so interresting and stinking complicated. This war started because of lies, misunderstandings and cultural differences from all sides. Pinpointing the bad guy is quite difficult. And boy do I like finding the bad guy of a war!
I couldn't agree with you more! That's what makes history so interesting; people do things for a plethora of reasons, and nobody does evil for evil's sake. The Anglo-Pequot War is a great example of things gone wrong in a tragic way.
@@UncivilHistory why you censor my previous comment?

Only two videos on this channel!? This needs to change. Great quality videos IMHO
An excellent video and perfect for my history class, clear, concise, interesting and fairly non biased. Its well worth subscribing even if its one video per year the quality is worth the wait.

A year went so fast woah, it felt like yesterday i discovered the channel
I REALLY hope I produce more quickly. Since I am one person and life gets in the way, it is difficult to make detailed videos quickly, but I will try more!
Uncivil History dont worry take your time, I still enjoy the videos dude. Just don’t overwork yourself :)
The wars were mostly based on crops, props, valuables, values, and other kinds of wants and needs
Fascinating formerly forbidden history made liberated!
The extremely dirty territory wars of our colonial past. Its crazy how the school teachers glaze over this.

Hi! I'm a student and this is my assigned research topic. Thank you so much for explaining it well! This is so useful.
Springfield was also one of these towns. Now the largest city in western New England
Nice, glad to see more from you.
YES I’ve been waiting for a year I’m soooo happy!
I grew up in the town where the first massacre took place, Mystic CT. Not once was the story of the massacre of the Pequots ever mentioned in school. There had been a statue erected in honor of the guy who lead the attack on the Pequots, John Mason, but it was rightly taken down in the 90’s. The Pequots have their own casino now, as do the Mohegans.
The animation is amazing.
*YES*
Please do more of these videos, I am so glad that vids like this exists. I love the complexities in history that analyzes areas that most textbooks simplified and glossed over!
Thanks so much! And I am totally with you on the complexities :)
I love the animations, it reminds me of the point-and-click adventure games of the 90s.

This is so awesome! Keep up the good work, can't wait for part two!
Nice. I really think you can be a decent size history channel on UA-cam. Your videos are both informative and very good art quality.
Thank you! But that's the difficult part about becoming a decent size history channel; it's much easier to make half-baked animations with much less research. I am trying to make the BEST possible videos, so serious learners can learn and be entertained. Because I am one person, it makes it all the more difficult. But comments like your are encouraging, so thank you! I will keep it up :)
Glad to see you posting! I subscribed to your channel a while back, based solely on the strength of your singular video about Thanksgiving. Keep up the good work and don't be such a stranger between posts. BTW, do you animate your own videos? What software do you use? Just curious. Take care and enjoy your holiday. :)
Thank you! Yes I use Harmony Toon Boom to create my animations, and I do all of it myself (that's why it takes so long for me to upload). I will be trying to upload quicker from now on :)
@@UncivilHistory I appreciate the content you make, and I must ask, do you make these by yourself, or is "Pani" a team or group of sorts?

Cool video, see you guys next Thanksgiving
It’s already been more than a year. We want part 2 to come soon, and a different upload schedule. This yearly one video upload is kind of ridiculous, especially for this kind of channel.
Since the animation is so amazing I could understand like a bi monthly upload schedule but once a year is just unheard of

Thank you so much!
This is outstanding work. Pronunciations matter about as much as a mask in times where it’s uncommon to show one’s face. I digress.
Outstanding and beyond a comprehensive synopsis with excellent details for an overview account of an incredibly important conflict in world history.
Secondly, you did title this work “part 1”. It doesn’t promise anything and I get that it’s tough work as well as time consuming but, part 1 and the fact that this is excellent, sort of implies and attempts to owe us, your subscribers, the part 2, you know that you totally have within you. Part 2’Boom BAI Yay!”
C’mon man,
Anyways…
I’m a huge fan but, you’re in risk of being Sandy Koufax. The best ever seen but, seen seldom or not enough. Randy Moss to a lesser extent. We believe in you
Good to see you back.
So i checked 2 weeks ago and notifications were on, I'm just now seeing this video because UA-cam disabled my notifications. They really do play favorites, I've been waiting years for this vid
The quality of the content you make is beyond the word valuable, I thought your account was dead I received a notification for this video. If it takes you this long to make this from of great content. Keep doing it!
Thanks so much for the encouraging words!
Excellent - Much detail but brief. English were masters in making Treaties & Buying Land. Usually, they never kept the Treaties and/or negotiated them with anyone regardless of Native Protocol . Many Natives would accept " Payment " from the English for Land Use expecting that Natives would also continue use. Permanent Building on Land was an English Condition for Ownership of Land - this Concept was not ingrained into the Native Mind. This war was the beginning of Native Relations and how the WASP would " Negotiate " with Native Americans for the next 400 years. Thanks.
Oh geez

Proud Pequot member!!! 3 facts about Pequot's being the first. 1#.Did you know Pequot's are the oldest tribe in America established in 1666. Every Tribe after that was established in the 1800s two hundred years later. 2# The first written war ever in the US was against the Pequot's. 3# The Mashantucket Pequot's was first Tribe to have they recognition and land taken away no longer can we call our self Pequot anymore, it was against the law to say you was Pequot most if not all was killed off or sold as slaves across the world. But many many many years later we got our recognition back and just the swamp lands of which we once owned. Just some fun facts
