The SsangYong Rexton is a very individual proposition in the large SUV field, offering a long list of standard equipment and a great deal of metal for your money. It’s considerably less expensive than similarly large rivals, but still offers an attractive, modern interior. Its limitations are below-par efficiency, and a driving experience that trails behind other SUVs. However, its separate-chassis construction, impressive diesel engine and four-wheel drive make it a very practical workhorse with an impressive towing capability. If thought of as a family-friendly alternative to a pickup, the seven-seat Rexton is well worth considering.

My dad owned a 2009 rexton new, he gave it to my brother recently but in the 9 years that he owned it, it has gone a great job and was very reliable , comfortable and practical
We have rexton, after running 100K kms, still all stock. The quality is amazing!

I’m a big fan of Land Rovers, but a bet this will be more reliable
My 2012 Land Rover Discovery with 138,000 miles had absolutely no problem. Plus my new Range Rover Velar has given me no problems

Your land rover discovery is just a rebadged ford and that crappy car can reach 130,000 miles when towed. Velar is an unreliable junkbox

If you're lookin a reliable land rover, freelander 2 is the way to go
I don´t like when the press is biased, praising cars that have no connections with reality, but critiquing cars that make sense for actual buyers. But Ginny here was so-so on her appreciations. If course this is not a normal passengers car, that normal urban people would buy (the majority).
BUT...
There is nothing wrong with an old-school body on frame SUV. That´s how they are supposed to be, if you intend to use them for off road, towing, carrying big loads, and make them suffer. The ride on this thing improved so much that you are not going to feel any significant difference to the newer CUVs. Every car has it´s purpose and it´s potential buyers. So if you are into hot hatches, you have no saying in it. I can also laugh at small, 2x4, 1L toy cars people buy in Europe, because it would be so impractical on a muddy slippery jungle trail, carrying a ton of stuff, child seats, through ever changing weather, water crossings, etc. So this Rexton would be perfect for me.

Yes but they are independent, their production to all only in korea. research all too. Mahindra just collaborate. It is not about profit as it is in loss for decades but Tivoli made a great come back.

Body-on-frame construction makes it ideal for towing caravans or boats.

It’s a real workhorse 4x4 suv, huge too. And it’s easy to drive.... plus point : on the road, all other cars and hipsters crv/suv, automatically give way to you when see this beast coming, in their rear view mirror ..😂. We use to own one, lasted 9years. Sad to see it off. Reason , also why we didn’t get a second one, the company after sale service in Malaysia, is so lousy, it can almost said that it’s non existent. Would love own this new model, only if the after sale service improve, or the current dealership have change hand, and a better one in place with real after service.
dgguy3636 i understand you bro, im amazed at how well built and strong ssangyongs are. They might not look very nice. but in my opinion, theyre just as tough as a land cruiser. 06 Kyron owner here, bought new, 12 years still strong
I like it, especially the interior. I'd have the top spec one at 3 years old, when deprecation has worked its magic.
Had a previous version of this, drove for 300,000 miles yup you read that correctly, reliable machine.
Wish it came with a V6 diesel, seems like a pretty good alternative to the Land Cruiser if it is as reliable enough.
.... Probs just as reliable it has a 7 year warranty compared to Toyotas 3 year
Apart from impression there is no need to spend almost twice as much on the Toyota Land-cruiser,Mitsubishi Pajero etc.. which are almost identical to the Sangyong...you get a strong reliable Mercedes engine and gear box, luxurious interior and the new design is rather nice!!
I totally would buy this good looking massive beast of a car. It looks tuff and rugged, modern and very SUV like! I also think it's a good price for such a car. Absoultly love it.

Loved the styling of this the moment I saw it recently.... Then when I saw the older model.... I liked this version even more.. I only hope it has a key...? I have now just test drove the latest Nissan Nirvava push button start I am not keen on.. Liked the hydraulics that lift the rear pick up section cover..
I bought one new in 2005 and I have done 210 thousand km in it, I still have it, still use it and it drives like a new car, and that's the truth

Hi to all the car guys and girls I have a ssangyong rodius turismo and it has had a accident with the passenger side front end and I can't seem to find the rodius parts it's a 2015 model and whenever I search for parts it just comes with ssangyong korando turismo are they the same?? Please help me I need a new dashboard and front belts and bonnet and left wing and left headlight and a grill I really need assistance please thanks and its a abs grey colour

Its Coming to America at the end of this Year It might be badged as a Pininfarina though instead of SsangYong Their still deciding on that though.

Hopefully it doesn't come stateside badged as a Pininfarina or, even worst, Mahindra. I've traveled overseas and am familiar with the SsangYong brand.
If the price is right and it does come over stateside. SsangYong may have a potential customer.
Agreed Chris The SsangYong brand would be better known Internationally than Pininfarina or Mahindra ones, Certainly their new Range of cars Tivoli, Rexton & Musso are really Good Ive a 2016 Tivoli XLV & its a great car

It has 7 speed automatic transmission from Mercedes? Now that was a bit surprising.
Jukka L really if I remember correctly They almost always use Mercedes powertrains. I remember a salesman told me this over a decade ago. It was apparently a selling point for him... That information made me go the opposite direction.
Jamaican Me Crazy yes agreed, Ssangyong is not very appealing. However, it is brave that they are not copying anyone else in terms of looks/design, but that has only resulted in a very ugly design for Ssanyong in my opinion (unfortunately).
They took Mercedes engines and transmissions many years ago. But now this is their own evolution of that old tech (both engine and transmission)

The window between the C and D pillar is tiny though; passengers can barely see outside and driver's visibility is limited

I've never heard of or seen a Ssangyong certainly not the Rexton. I suppose even better, I love that it's old school still maintaining it's build. This looks to be a truly solid, brilliant, well equipped, safety feature vehicle. I would like the ELX 18" wheels, but I also like the idea of the 3D vehicle check which seems to only be available on the Ultimate which is a shame. Dilemma. Thank you for test driving this vehicle and posting this.
Everyone who complains its pricy. Take a look at the prices in norway. It would cost atleast as much as a xc90 t8 hybrid.

Mahindra has bought ssangyong. So ssangyong is now a subsidiary of mahindra. This rexton 2018 will be sold as mahindra xuv700 in India. But will be sold as ssangyong rexton in the markets where ssangyong has a stronger market hold than mahindra.
For Europe it is build in Korea like before (They have even opened new engine factory in Korea thanks to Mahindra money). In india they will probably build it locally, wondering if from POSCO steel like Korean or cardboard, like all Indian cars.
They purchased it but Ssangyong is COMPLETELY independent and manufactured 100% in korea and sold in selected countries, most models not in india too.
Is SsangYong in bed with Hyundai/Kia cause dang there sure looks to be some parts bin parts on that thing from the H/K group.

The Ssangyong Rexton is a bargain SUV.
It’s a really good SUV but it only has one engine choice.
I really doubt it's practicality, especially with children. Even for Ginny, the car floor in above knee height. There is not way, that a small child could climb to their seat on their own, and then even for a normal height man, the seats are really high for lifting. And I would have liked to seen how easily Ginny could lift loaded suitcase into the boot, because the lip seemed to be about waist high.

KREEPYKRAWLLY for its class it is reasonably priced
That's cheaper than Korean Brethren of Hyundai Santa Fe and Kia Sorento and for it's capability it is a lot cheaper than Toyota Land Cruiser which is nearly 3 times the price. I didn't include Land Rovers as the only one near enough to compare size wise would be Range Rover or Discovery both of which are at least twice if not three times the price.
swewunna - Rexton prices in the UK from just shy £28k to £38k, Sorrento starts at £29k to £42k. Not a huge difference.
Sorento is not the comp you're looking for. What you're looking for is Toyota Land Cruiser, Disco 5, Mitsubishi Pajero and anything else with 7 seats and a low gear ratio, and I'll bet there aren't many of those

You all knock the body on the frame because you got used to monocot construction but I still find the tradition way reassuring for a true 4x4. People who remember the discovery and classic range rover go anywhere city or country type car will be happy with this.
It certainly gives the farmer / landowner a car to use anywhere at a reasonable price again something land rover have forgotten. With there over priced car even the discovery has become a Chelsea only vehicle now.
This car is for those of use who live in the real UK north of Watford. The real world. with a great warranty and some good small 4x4 Ssangyong could make a real impact in country circles they now have a good pickup in the range ssangyoung could make a good market for themselves. To be honest with my 2016 xc60 only giving 34mpg in the real world this car worth a look

He have the 2019 Rexton. It is nice, quiet, well assembled, but drives like every ordinary body-on-frame vehicle I drove over the years: bouncy and unsettled over the smallest bumps and the steering is mediocre at best. The price is very tempting but for comfort better get a unibody design, the body on frame is agricultural and it feels very ancient on the road.

Ginny is dwarfed by that truck. So 27k to 30k is budget priced? Same pricing going on out here in the US. It was not that long ago when you can get a BMW 3 for that money.
