  • Presented by Sentry (lwj.dev/sentry) - Design engineer Maggie Appleton is brilliant. She's proven her ability to grow and master a skill set multiple times throughout her career, making a name for herself as an illustrator, a product designer, and beyond. But she's not worried about labels. She's not worried about... well, ANY of this stuff, really. I got the chance to sit down with her for lunch and learn why she's so dang happy, how she sets goals, and what it means to her to "be successful".
In Web Lunch, host Jason Lengstorf joins talented, successful, and - most importantly - happy web professionals for a meal and a conversation. In each conversation, Jason aims to learn the secrets, strategies, and techniques that allow these folks to build careers that provide them resilience in the face of an ever-changing software industry, proper compensation and recognition for their efforts, and joy and growth instead of burnout. Watch to learn how you can build your own resilient, lucrative, joyful career.

Wow, this is the interview I never knew I needed, thank you! I am a semi-retired designer who should be illustrating. But now I am too fascinated by design and development to draw anymore, but kind of feel guilty about it. I hadn't heard of Maggie, but I'm so glad I've discovered her through your channel. She is a real inspiration - I feel I have permission to completely fall down the rabbit hole of coding/web development. Also, I cannot believe you were in Stratford! I go there a lot as my son lives in East London - I think I would've fainted had I seen you walking along in the Olympic Park! 😀

Stratford is cool! I spent a couple days there and had a blast 💜

Sometimes I need these drops of real-life examples. Somehow I felt inspired and connected with her story (maybe because I also can't plan anything long-term - everything I plan will change in a few months).
The only thing that is really hard for me to absorb and believe is when people say they don't care about money. To have this speech/mentality, either you come from a wealthy family or are already making a lot of money. I wish I didn't need to worry about money, but if I have no family wealthy to rely on, and I need to take care of my family's future, money must be a priority as well.
Other than that, a nice point of view of our careers... thank you!

money is SUCH a nuanced topic. I think there’s a world of difference between “I’m not motivated to switch jobs by how much they pay” and “I don’t care about money at all”
for example, I know I could probably double my salary by going to work at some of the ultra trendy companies right now, but the work itself is unappealing. the extra money isn’t a big enough lever - I’ll choose things I enjoy at my current income instead
however, if I don’t have a job, money is a huge lever. I think “not motivated by money” is most often said in the context of “I make enough that money alone isn’t going to get me to move”

You have a great point and I agree with you. But this is just hard for me personally, not a problem with anyone else. Maybe it's my background, history, and goals (?) that put me in this situation to struggle with the "money is secondary" speech.
Maybe because we are in a capitalist system, combined with growing social issues, the cost of living exploding, and wages not growing at the same pace. When you have people to look after, this combination creates mental stress that "run while you can, it's the end of the world!".
So while I type this comment, it gets even clearer the reason why her speed inspired me. It was almost a fiction, a new dimension that I wish I could be part of. But since I can't, I am trapped by the feeling of getting mused by this (part of the) conversation.
Problems of our time, anyway. Thanks for all the amazing content and people you bring, that help us to reflect on many things beyond technical.

Really enjoying the format of these conversational-lunch-type videos! I really connected with her story as well, as someone who seems to switch things up every year or so, and it was great to hear someone else talk about their winding career path.

Maggie has been my hero for a while now! Been watching the various creations growing in her digital garden. Loved getting the chance to hear her thoughts on career trajectory etc. I think being in love with the process and enjoying what you do is vital.

"Design engineer" - that's a new development in industry job titles right? I like it a lot more than the older "dev-signer".

Fantastic video. I relate to a lot she mentioned. I have a lot I'm good at and if I exhaust how much I can contribute in a role it becomes decadent. I always feel the urge to help in all the ways I'm able to
