There’s a lot of criticism thrown at this movie, but in the end it’s a beautiful story of a man broken by war who is rehabilitated and healed. Excellent performances by Will Smith and Matt Damon.
In August of 1969 I was in Basic combat training at Ft. Biss in Texas. We were having "Record" fire at the rifle range. There was over a 1000 men shooting that day. We were shooting for our rifleman medals that day. When I went on line to shoot my 100 rounds of 7.62 x 51 using an M14 rifle. I felt just like this. I was in the groove and I was one with my weapon and the range. Everything dropped away. There was just the sun, the sand and the targets popping up down range. I began firing. It was amazing. The targets came up, my rifle fired. Again & again for 100 shots. Everything else just faded out. I was one with the rifle. The soldier doing my scoring was extremely excited. I was aware of him, but paid no attention to his words. I was too busy shooting. When I was done, I had only missed one shot. I scored Expert. But that was not all. It turned out that I had the best score in the entire battalion. It was a magical afternoon for me. I was just 17 years old. I'd never felt so good in my life. I still remember that day.
That's a coincidence. Because you see, the movie above is inspired by Krishna and Arjuna. Arjuna was a prince involved in a civil war against his paternal cousins. But he was disturbed by the idea of having to potentially kill his own family. Krishna, a wise king and Arjuna's maternal cousin, was an ally - he chose however, to not actively fight in the war, instead to act as a guide and strategist. To allay Arjuna's doubts, Krishna advised him on the validity of the war - his advises would be compiled later into the holy book called the Bhagavath Gita (The Song of Divine Wisdom). I call this a coincidence, because Arjuna, a warrior whose preferred technique was archery, is more closer to you, a soldier with a rifle, than to a golfer. But while there was no Krishna present by your side in person, he was there in your heart. Like Gods always are - and those moments when we establish a link to them, are the times when we are at our best selves.
That's the Holy Spirit consuming your body young man.Its a wonderful feeling ,I know because I went through it to.I don't know who you are and you don't know me but one things for sure, your a blessed man ,oh and thanks for your service to our country.
I have never been a sports fan, but I absolutely love most sports movies. This one is a GREAT example of one that I love. The cinematography and camera work is truly wonderful, and it's a great story.
this movie is about far more than golf, its about life.. golf is the tool used to get the message over... the finding of inner peace and harmony in the most unlikely of places... at times when you need it most.. what a beautiful film, ive seen non better...
The best round I ever played was when I only concentrated on how the swing felt and tried to swing the club in a full proper circle to a musical rhythm. I truly had no idea of what my score was during the round and told my playing partners not to tell me what it was. Every shot I played I just thought of the circle. Occasionally I can repeat some of that but usually struggle. The feeling comes and goes and it takes a lot of faith to just swing the club especially when the score is good. Just a great film
This scene encapsulates the feeling of golf perfectly. The focus on hitting that ball melds with the beauty of the landscape, the smell of the mist, the feeling of a slight breeze, the sun peering through a tree. All comes into one. It's kind of like a feel, don't think vibe, but it still related well to the game game.
Maybe the most beautiful 6 minutes of golf ever filmed. Still gives me chills. Love the actor who plays Jones. Everytime I've seen him in anything else, I think of this scene. He IS Bobby Jones. I'm sure his buddies and family tell him the same thing.
So much wisdom in one speech. "Get ourselves outta its way" "Your hands are wiser than your head ever gonna be" "See that focus..." "Aint some dragon you gotta slay" Why do the best athletes make it look effortless? Because for them, it is.
They find themselves in that moment.. their souls and inner God like being. It’s nothing but oneself and complete peace for a moment. The kicker is, life moves fast
Best quote of the movie "Your hands are smarter than your heads ever gonna be" Point is you have to feel your way through Golf, just like life. I have learned so much about myself and about life through the game. It has touched my life and whether I'm playing good or bad I enjoy every stroke because I know it's a gift, not a privledge. Truly is the greatest game there is and will ever be. You only have yourself to blame be it good bad or ugly. Just like life 👍
In my top 5 movies of all time. This movie to me is about overcoming the personal struggle within to find our true self. The flick has heart , passion and loads of soul. Robert Redford is an amazing man.
I am on a journey to find my true self. This sence is what I need to begin my journey. Thank you God for your wisdom and knowledge in movies like this.
We often not see the "Field", rather the straight line to where we tend to go. Glad this movie section makes it so damn clear, that there is more! And it applies not only to golf players, also to all of us in life situations :-)
Funny how everyone but Bagger look so concentrated/anxious/dumbstruck at that last shot. Bagger is completely calm. He knew that ball was in way before it landed.
I’ve seen the field not just once but twice maybe threes, maybe more..god willing who knows. y’all I have felt it and I have seen the field. I’ve seen people in the field and they don’t return. But those moments, those many moments that I’ve expieranced this, I have been in awe. The world, the competition, my problems disappear but every meaning, birth and journey comes to light. I begin to forget what this world means but only what it was built by..not on. All I wanted was to expierance to peace, mentally. Until I watched this movie and I tried this in a empty roller rink. All by myself and I went into this field mode and I felt free.
Oh Oh... we pissed off one of those freaking retard golf fans, run to the hil fuck if we run to the hills they'll hit one of those retard golf balls on us... Those guys love balls... if you know what i mean

Yes, but given that African Americans were and still are a minority in the U.S, the trope does have weight, doesn't it? Imagine- the white character is being given the best and hardest lessons in life from someone who wouldn't be seen as a teacher in the conventional sense (not from an affluent background, probably not gone to colleges unlike the White kid etc)
This scene is kinda accurate to how it is for me when I play or even just hit balls at the driving range. It's focus, muscle memory and replicating that unique authentic swing that only works for you and no one else. I feel myself blanking everything out the same way, it's just me and the ball, like Bagger says here.
Very true it's the tempo, I find golf relaxing and in tune if you take your time and feel the body. Sometimes you can push and sometimes not, we just need to know when.
Lotta those shots were filmed on Jekyll island at Indian mounds course. Such a beautiful place. The beach battle scenes and several others in the movie Glory were filmed there also.
This is one of the first times I think I've ever seen him be so soft spoken and calm in a movie, so used to his louder outgoing funny personality that comes out in films. It's really nice, relaxing
Watching it for the third time. Especially after the Open Day at the Semperoper in Dresden watching the ballet training it makes me thinking of how difficult it is to convene a team, either on stage, on the shopfloor or the field. It is the small moves that make the difference when the field is choosing us. During my vivid playing time of Ultimate Frisbee there was one particular tournament when this perfect setting happened - team of unknown found together winning the the overall tournament:-)
Those of us who have endeared to this form of understanding have never been able to except help with our head let alone our hands. So it's not to surprising that spiritually were blessed beyond measure, the problem is humility and grace. They baffle the shit out of us in God's world.Along with him.

I got to give to the Irish and the Scottish for coming with a game that takes a beast and and tame s the very instinct that drives a man or women to focus and become one with the ball it's so peaceful and calming
@nomorephones The movie was about the Hindu Bhagavadgita, which talks about the destiny of people. Rannulph Junnuh is a play on the name Arjuna, which is the main character in the Gita. Bagger Vance is Krishna, the commonfolk avatar of Vishnu. Bobby Jones was in the path of knowledge, jnana marga, since he was golfing and getting college degrees. Walter Hagen wants kama and artha, pleasure and material success. Junnuh is stuck in the middle, and doesn't find out which path he's in until the end.
it’s just you and the field. just you, that ball and the flag. Me, you and the clubs. it’s just the clubs, the tee, the ball, you, me, the field, and the clubs
BOBBY was a work of ART 👍
Love this movie. Very underated.
I see the field every time I play. The field. The sand the water the bushes the weeds and the trees to. I see it all. And then I see the beer cart.
beer carts are the best sights of all
LMAO!!!! I read this in Bagger's voice. Thank you.
Dude that was funny!
Honestly, thank you.
And the cart girls too!

Will Smith gives an underrated monologue in this scene. One of the best.

Legend of Slapper Vance
“Look like 180 yards to you?”
“No…it’s 181.”
What a great life lesson from these two sentences.
this is one of the most beautiful scenes choreographed in a
sports movie ever.
a little heavy on the string kitsch, though
Not one of..... This is!!
One of my most favorite movie moments. it is the truth for anything a person does. whatever sport, whatever creative effort, whatever challenge.
this movie is about far more than golf, its about life.. golf is the tool used to get the message over... the finding of inner peace and harmony in the most unlikely of places... at times when you need it most..

Completely agree.
Based on the concept of Bhagwat Gita

Well said. I tend to rush when I'm not playing right. This movie reminds me about the tempo and the Feel.

This movie is amazing. Great performances from the entire cast.

I guess you haven't watched a lot of movies.
Absolutely. Might be my favorite of all time. Finding yourself. Your authentic swing. Symbolic of life in a lot of ways.
Love it When Bobby Jones Expression changes as he is approaching the ball...FOCUS!!
Ha it does
I'm glad I saw this clip to remind me of what a great movie this was. I haven't seen it in a long time. Definitely on my list of movies to re-watch
Will Smith plays this so beautifully...
Richard McCann
He was at the top of his game in this movie.
He has made many other movies. None of them can come close to this one .
Well that's not true, he's had several really great performances (Pursuit of Happyness comes to mind). I do agree that he was great in this movie.
@@JM-db8ez don’t forget I Am Legend. Will Smith is a phenomenal actor and has been a part of many great movies.
Yes…too bad he is a douche bag.
"Cuz if you had seen the field, you wouldn't be hacking at that ball like you was choppin' weeds out from under your front porch" LOL!
True love letter to the game.

I wonder if Jada thought Will deserved an Oscar for this one too. Yes sir, masa, you is a great golfer.

🤣🤣🤣 good one. It really pisses the group off behind them. Especially when Will Smith is along for the monologue 👍👍
One of the greatest sports movies EVER. Great use of music too. That music theme is amazing!
Such a good movie! There’s tons of quasi-spiritual wisdom in this film like this scene!

Does the new Aladdin movie count too??😂😂😂

Smith and Damon are both really good 'eye actors'. They don't need to talk, we just gotta look at their eyes to see what they are feeling.
