    Magic. This is the best SB track in my opinion. They were so good at this point, they kind of lost me later on, 'Gold' and 'True' and such, not bad songs, just not my thing. You can not ignore Tony Hadley's vocals though, no matter what he's singing. Another cracking video guys, thank you.

    Loved this , I was 15 and this blew our minds , charity shops sold out of army jackets and Norwegian knit . What a time my local social club had the stranglers, joy division, and a few others , it was just a little venue run by the committee from the council estate . Twice weekly junior disco , and everyone was dressed like New Romantics or punks of mods even teddy boys. Fantastic times .

    Another awesome track, love how you are embracing this theme! Agree about the 12" version, in fact their album with 12" songs is great. The Freeze 12" is my Spandau Ballet favourite, it's fantastic! Then they moved on to a more "regular" pop sound and their biggest hits, but I really like their early stuff.
    A band that is rarely talked about is Classix Nouveaux, definitely New Romantic, lead by the charismatic Sal Solo. "Is it a dream" is a good starting point!

    I find Spandau Ballet have two personas, the dance band and the artist band. To Cut A Long Story Short and Chant No.1 (I Don’t Need This Pressure On) are great examples of their Dance persona, whilst True and Gold and Only When You Leave are them being much more in their Artist persona, but both facets of them always show huge talent for hits and interesting ideas.
    Love it. Great choice.

    Good song, very talented band and Tony Hadley can bloody sing. They were massive chart-wise with a ton of Top 10 albums and singles. Alex, I have a Gary Glitter story. Rather embarrassing but I went to see him and the Glitter Band in N.Z. with my girlfriend (now wife of 45 years), and just outside the concert hall I got the shit kicked out of me by 3 thugs and I spent the whole concert bleeding all over my girlfriend from a blood nose that would not stop. Good times😊 Loving the week of music guys, and looking forward to Bowie and Oz weeks.

    At the time of this message, I'm 48 here in Southern California. You referenced Depeche Mode and their popularity here in the L.A. area as well as KROQ. The three most important DJ's that KROQ had back in the 80's were Richard Blade (originally from Bristol, England), Jed the Fish and Rodney Bingenheimer who hosted Rodney on the Rock. Given that so much of the synth talent was coming from the UK, Richard Blade was instrumental in bringing them to Southern California via KROQ. Rodney would scout the local clubs here in L.A. for talent. So many bands got radio exposure because of him when they most needed it. Jed is credited as the first DJ in the U.S. to bring Depeche Mode to the airwaves. DM's popularity in Los Angeles can't be under stated. We even used to have an annual Depeche Mode convention hosted by KROQ.
    KROQ has since lost its influence as many radio stations have with online streaming apps and downloadable music, but it was definitely a great run for them from the late 70's to the mid-90's. That's when bands like Kid Rock and Limp Bizkit became popular. Barf.

    • @TheThamesmen
      @TheThamesmen  9 місяців тому +1

      Not the only thing Rodney was scouting for according to recent reports. The downfall of that era’s DJ’s.
      George here. When I arrived in LA (1998) KROQ we’re still a force to reckon with. As you said not the case now and it is destined to repeat play offspring and blink 182!

    • @MrCucamonga1
      @MrCucamonga1 9 місяців тому

      @@TheThamesmen Yeah, KROQ was still doing OK at that time, but not nearly as well as it was during the New Wave to grunge era. The alternative music listeners used to be more united under the same banner of music led by bands like Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Sound Garden, Smashing Pumpkins, Alice In Chains, Weezer, NIN, etc. It was almost like the music was doing the work for them. Then around 96, that demographic started splitting between the emo bands and the hard rock/metal bands like the ones I mentioned in my first comment. Korn, Slipknot and others come to mind.
      Also, Los Angeles was being pulled more towards Hip Hop and Hip Pop through stations like Power 106 and thanks to Dr. Dre and Snoop, essentially defining the Southern Cali hip hop sound. Puff Daddy was also blowing up around that time. There was also a huge House Music scene around that same time in Los Angeles. If you were in your party years during that time like I was lucky enough to be, there was a smorgasbord of active party scenes to choose from. It was a great time for music.
      But...still loved punk, post-punk and new wave even though I was just a kid at the time.

    I watched your Planet Earth reaction first, and, despite being a major Duranie in the 80s, I agree with George that the Spandau song sounds edgier. It's stood the test of time a bit better. Duran's video clip was better though 😛

Back then you were either Team Spandau or Team Duran - and I was Team Spandau, they were fabulous back then - one of my faves in my teens. And Martin Kemp (my crush) looking so cool on bass. Tony Hadley has such a beautiful distinctive voice and he still sounds incredible live.🔥❤️
