I really love Roller Derby. Joan Weston and Charlie O'Connell 40 Tony Roman and Carol meyer was the best. Joan Weston did the Roller Derby Game just like Charlie O'Connell they are gone now but never will be forgotten. Thanks for your time and wonderful job. Rip.
I loved roller derby, late 1960’s and early 1970’s. Terri Lynch, Judy Sowinski and Liz Hernandez were the best. When they faced the likes of Shirley Hardman, wow, watch out. It was fun...
Yes, thank you for positing this video. I didn't think any of the early T-Bird games existed on video. I thought I heard one time that KTLA Channel 5 videos were erased every week. This was about the time I started watching the roller games again after not watching them in the 1950's. I remember the night we discovered they were back on the television. I begged my parents to let us stay at my uncles house to finish watching the game. After that, we were regular viewers and fans.
This is from 1964; from what I've been told, it's the earliest visual record of the T-Birds in action. Amazing footage of some legendary skaters (Ronnie Rains was a rookie on this T-Bird team). Liz Hernandez was my favorite; she was the fastest woman on skates.
My mom was the fastest woman on Skates...... Sharon Steven's skated for t-birds and the Hawaiian teams. My Uncle Skated for New York teams.... Jimmie Ciota
I do not believe the T-Birds and the Pioneers games were ever filmed. If it was, it was never on TV here in Chicago. However, I was lucky enough to see their first game against each other in 1972 at old Comisky ball park..Over 50,000 fans attended. Both teams were at their best that evening. Pionewers did win that game. Majority of the fans were for the T-Birds, but there were still plenty of Pioneer fans also. The 2 teams were skating a series in the Midwest all the way out to LA...
You were so lucky to had been in person to see that inter league game. I became a Roller Derby fan in '69 & in the San Francisco Bay Area similar inter league games ended & never got a chance to witness any in person. Here in San Francisco it was always Seltzer Roller Derby territory & games were seen live on a local independent station KTVU out of Oakland. On UHF stations, 1st was the Philadelphia Warriors later the Los Angeles Thunderbirds on Channel 44. Did get the Pioneers games briefly on Channel 36! This was when Games was @ it's best. Got pretty bad sadly in the early 70's when it allowed too much circus theatrics overplayed the Skaters talents.
I have the Roller Games Annual Yearbook from the 1966 - 1967 season. It has photos of all the skaters in the league and their bios. Teams featured: Los Angeles T-Birds, Chicago Hawks, Detroit Devils, Texas Outlaws, Hawaiian Warriors. If you'd like to buy it, email me.

You can make your offer to: noname1479@gmail.com
I have turned down offers previously that were too low.
Sunny George didn't honored his offer. This Roller Games Annual Yearbook from the 1966 - 1967 season is still available.
Not sure dude if early sixties....the game was just given to me
Looks to be pre 1965 so probably late 50s/ early 1960s
Toni Tagg was one of the skaters who could handle Joan Weston.
Yes, Julie Patrick, another top skater, said Toni Tagg was one of the toughest skaters she went against.
T.B強いよね
@excelsior331 Early 1960's.
The arena that is shown at the beginning is a fake. It never existed. Guess it was to make viewers think they skated in some fancy arena
I believe it was the Santa Monica Civic Auditorium, which was built in 1958.
Didn't they skate at the Cow Palace in SF too?
