    Alumaloy behaves like solder does. You heat up the metal that you are adhering the alumaloy (or solder) to and melt the alumaloy over the hot surface. Technically it isn't welding. The aluminum cools with a strong air-tight bond.

    I think the problem you had was that you needed to concentrate most of your heat on that bung, as it's much heavier and will heat slower. It looked to me that the bung wasn't quite hot enough and thinner pipe material was quite a bit hotter so the molten filler metal was just trying to wet the surface of the pipe instead of bonding with the bung and the pipe. Just my two cents worth

    I think you are supposed to moves the torch around the area (judging by other videos)
    That way you don't weld peanuts and get a better weld. It didn't bond well to the other piece because it's thicker than the area you applied the heat to.

    Sort of right. Rod has flux. You do need to remove oxidation from the parts first. Parts need to be 730ºF to melt the rod. You can get a temperature scanner for $30.

  • @Stevesmith-yw7cr
    @Stevesmith-yw7cr 9 років тому

    You need to wire brush the aluminum to get rid of the aluminum oxide that appears quickly when the aluminum is exposed to air. It is very hard and prevents the braze material from sticking to each of the parts.
    Plus you need to move the heat around to prevent melt through. Too much heat on aluminum will result in melted blobs.

    don't heat up the rod, heat the base metal, the rod will flow towards it, and you won't get those cold joints.

      Yeah. But he didn't demonstrate it... those joints look like sin. Not nearly hot enough. They should wick down and create a fileted look around the bolt being joined. His is super globby. Which is why it looks like a cold solder joint.

      I'm trying to do this on an oil pan for my bike. Is this Home Depot torche enough for the job? It's just a small 2 inch hairline crack.

    • @EpicHeroSandwich
      @EpicHeroSandwich 9 років тому +2

      +hairlesheep only if it's one of the wider 1" diameter flower tips. and I'd use mapp. aluminum has a tendency to suck heat. also the pan may start to seep oil as you torch it, cast aluminum has the bad habit of sucking up oil as it heat cycles, making it tougher to weld or join

    I totally think I'm going to try to do my intercooler piping this way.... I'm pretty good at soldering so imma give it a go. If I had a nice tig machine I would tig it but I don't and I'm tried of popping intercooler couplers.... And I thought of another good idea is use that alumaweld to add a bead at the end of each pipe so the coupler has something to grab too.

    aluminum oxidizes quickly and the aluminum oxide layer on uncleaned parts takes way more heat to break down than the actual aluminum underneath.this is why cleaning the parts thoroughly before joining them is key for a good bond. jesse james said so

    Fusing any kind of metal together takes practice. If all the pieces are the same alloy, it is a lot easier. That same product, or something similar, has been at the various trade shows, for decades now. It's nice to know it can be found at retail outlets. By the way, it isn't necessary for you, or anyone else, to be an expert at anything, much less, everything, to demonstrate a relevant product. Thanks for the heads up on the Alumaloy.

      Yes. I have since sold this car to a friend. I drove it a month ago and it definitely still holds boost years later. The hole I patched in the radiator still holds up also, and that's a consistent 20+ psi when warmed up

    You clean cos any oxidisation will stop it from adhering..plus never put rod in flame..and the melted rod will always flow towards the heat. Even uphill. . .

    Hey, would this work in repairing a crack aluminum oil pan? I got a leaky oil pan which the prior owner was trying to fix with JB Weld but they did a horrible job so it still leaking oil. don't wanna spend big $ replacing it too so looking for a quick fix but hopefully better than the previous owner. Thanks1

    • @LegitRaceCraft
      @LegitRaceCraft  8 років тому

      maybe, if the oil pan is cast aluminum then it might be harder. All oil and oil residue would have to be off of the area though, so it's probably easier to remove it before doing anything like that.

    Props for attempting it yourself, but being as it's part of a turbo setup, you should have paid for a real welder to do it. There are so many pinholes, it's sure to leak.
