Carolina Gomez, Miss Colombia 1994, was one of my favorite Miss U contestants ever, from any country. She was 1st runner up to India’s Sushmita Sen. Her evening gown at the time she competed in Miss U, was allegedly the most expensive gown ever worn in Miss U competition. She was not only beautiful, but seemed very kind and genuine.
Coincidental, when Turbay, Betancour, and Gomez reunite in 2014 Senorita Colombia, celebrating their 3-feat 1st runner-up finish, Ariadna was adjudge Miss Colombia to MU, who had the very infamous 1st runner-up finish in Miss Universe history.
I am from the Philippines. Miss India at the Miss U held in Manila was never a favorite delegate, call her a dark horse. Miss Colombia was highly popular. It was the close fight in the Q and A. Miss India nailed the answer and she remains eloquent until this day.
Miss Inida was very lucky in top 6 because she was not top 3 in that round. Plus, if you go by overall impression, which judges should be doing, it wouldn't be enough for India to make it to top 3.
I feel like I've found a pageant soulmate! I'm probably your same age, with an inexplicable fascination for MU, and a great nostalgia for the 90s. Thanks much! I've analyzed 1994 perhaps more than I should ! I think Columbia's best shot was 1992. Carolina was of course so sporting and brilliant but it was Sushmita's night.

Michelle McLean went on to become a celebrity in South Africa after her reign -- she was kind of our honourary queen since SA had a long dry spell after Margaret Gardiner and would have to wait until 2017 for the next MU crown. Michelle moved to SA, became a very well-known TV presenter, MC, philanthropist and business woman, always very visible and loved to this day in SA. She now lives in the USA with her second husband. One of the classiest MUs IMHO.
I am right along with you both. I am not kidding when I say that I've probably seen (on VHS tape) Miss America, Miss USA, Miss Teen USA, and Miss Universe from 1988-1996 hundreds and hundreds of times. Obsessed. Let's face it, Sushmita Sen was the most loved contestant that year. Sushmita Sen is still talked about in Phillipines, so many girls born since 1994 have been named Sushmita after her in phillipines.
Yes I agree! She was the dark horse of the competition, but once she answered her final question everyone knew who the winner was going to be. Venezuela was highly favor but the crown was for Sushmita 😍✨

With respect, Miss Puerto Rico shocked me with her top 6 placement, let alone a win. My pic that night was Miss Venezuela for the win with Miss Colombia coming in second.
I was a college student in 1994 when the most gorgeous ladies of the universe graced our country with their presence. Carolina Gomez stole the hearts of the Filipino nation. Crown or No Crown, in my book, she is still the most beautiful to have ever competed on the Miss Universe stage. 👑❤️
I replied, almost the same exact thing as you. I’m Filipino American ( but of course, always root for Miss Philippines 1st and foremost.) But, that year, Carolina Gomez stole my heart, and I’ve never forgotten her. Sometimes, even now, when watching Miss U, I look for the candidate that makes me feel the way Carolina did.
Sushmita and Aishwarya tied during the finals of Miss India 1994 and they were both asked another question. Sushmita was really articulate and answered with so much substance both at Miss India and Miss Universe. I am wondering what if Aishwarya competed at Miss Universe and Sushmita at Miss World???
Sushmita would’ve won Miss World. Aishwarya didn’t have the same level of competition that Sushmita did. One can only speculate if Aish will win at MU considering the top 6 question format had laid low heavy favorites like Carolina Iszak and Verna Vasquez. I wonder if she would’ve given such a profound answer like Sushmita did. I think her winning at MU is less certain than Sushmita at Miss World.
Destiny intervened and each was sent to the most appropriate contest for their particular set of skills. A double win at MW and MU is near to impossible and it goes to show how special each of these women were at that time and still are today.
@@PING1313 -- I don't really follow MW but I heard about this year's MW India and there being a good chance she could make it to the finals and possibly secure the crown. It was not to be but as I mentioned, the odds of it happening are so low it's actually surprising it's ever happened at all. But it's wonderful that it happened for India in 1994 as Sushmita and Aish are phenomenal women and really do represent the best of pagentry from those years.
@@ML-xh6rd It was just an observation in the pageant world and fanatics that everytime India wins MU, they also win MW in the same year; Sushmita and Aishwarya in 1994 and Lara and Priyanka in 2000.
That just blows my mind. She was so poised and mature. Phenomenal accomplishment in it's own right but moreso given she was barely old enough to compete.
The Colombian situation at the 90's influenced the result, Carolina Gómez has been the best candidate from Colombia so far and was robbed big time! Her reaction to the result was iconic, humbleness and empaphy!
Carolina Gomez was not robbed. Although, I am rooting for her to win. The final QandA performance affect their score. Based on the their answer in the top 3, Sushmita deserve to win as her answer show more substance.
I think Ms Columbia 1993 was the candidate robbed big time. I was shocked when Puerto Rico announced as a winner wherein Columbia's answer was way better. Puerto Rico response was too shallow. Maybe the judges preferred a fresh and young beauty that time. Columbia's beauty was too strong and fierce that others might got intimidated to her.

LOVE this. I am a pageant nerd, as well. Became obsessed with them around 1988 and fell off around 1995-96 (with my pure obsession). But I am well-versed in the history and, I still watch any pageant whenever they happen to be on TV. As for the 1992-1994 stretch with Miss Colombia. I am fine with each winner, but agree that each of those Miss Colombias would have made amazing winners.
I’ve watched your other videos but it’s only now I’ve seen this. Indeed interesting enough to have its own video. Personally, very interesting for me as well because, I was rooting for India’s first win through Madhu over Namibia’s Michelle (first win as well though); I love Venezuela’s Milka, but was so much impressed by Colombia’s Betancourt’s (my choice for MU) answer over PR’s Dayanara’s- so this was an upset for me; and from what I gather, a very interesting story regarding the top 3 in Manila - Venezuela’s Minorka as the crowd and fashion industry favourite and perceived front runner, Colombia’s Carolina as the judges and beauty pageants experts choice, prelims top scorer hence actual front runner of the 3 (Greece I think was the top scorer in the prelims), and India’s Sushmita’s first win in MU (I love first wins stories) and her back story win at Femina over eventual MW Ashwaira is a story for the books in the world of pageantry (imho, these back stories made Sushmita a very strong dark horse in MU vs the other 2; in a poll conducted with at least 10 Filipino celebrities, choices for the top 10 finalists always included Venezuela and Colombia. India, if am not mistaken was only mentioned once ). I love the eventual MU winners, but the Colombians would had been a great choice as well, specially Carolina 😊
I honestly believe that the ordinals for the Top 3 for the 1993 competition must've been all over the map with Dayanara gaining enough 1s and 2s, but I remember seeing one judge awarding her a "3" when the camera angle was behind one of the judges. Each contestant must have had a nearly equal smattering of 1s, 2s and 3s with Dayanara edging out the win.
@@jja8750 I think 1993 was a very close year. Dayanara probably won by having one #2 ranking over the others. Would not be surprised once the ranks are added up, Dayanara won with the lowest score by virtue of only 1 over Colombia and 2 over Venezuela.
No one can beat the history of Texas in pageantry. May I also add the Sushmita commended Carolina Gomez in an interview, calling Carolina Gomez as a woman who has lots of generosity of spirit and that she doesn't need to win to have this value ❤

Columbia holds the record for the most number of 1st runner up placements in all of MU history. While its neighbour Venezuela has the most crowns in MU history.
Actually Colombia and Venezuela both have six first runner ups, while USA has both the most amount of first runner ups (9) and Miss Universes (8) in MU history. Venezuela is right behind them with seven crowns.

1994 was a difficult year to judge and guess. Both Carolina and Sushmita did exceedingly well in all aspects of the competition. Many Filipinos were won over by Carolina's natural charm, intelligence, beauty and grace. But in the end Sushmita streaked to the final leg of the competition like the magical star that she is. To this day, Filipinos love both beauties, so different from each other yet so much alike in their power to win the heart of an entire nation, the universe rather.
I felt sad about this information. Adding the fact in 2008, they place 1st runner up before they won in 2014. Anyway, everything happens for a reason. Love from philippines

Colombia also did an amazing streak in the 2010s almost like Venezuela in the 90s, that is, winning the crown (2014), virreina in 2015, deuxieme dauphine in 2016, then virreina again in 2017. Hehe

In 1992, Venezuela was indeed the heavy favorite but once she was out of the top 3, the crown was up for grabs. India bombed the final question while the judges already favored Namibia over Colombia as she outscored her in swimsuit and evening gown. 1993 was a year with no clear favorites and Dayanara Torres started to catch the judges’ attention in the top 6 question round. In 1994, while Colombia may have ranked first in the preliminary, it was Greece, that was the preliminary favorite as she won both swimsuit and gown and India outscored Colombia in swimsuit and interview. So her supposed lead was tenuous at best.
Great video. I have always thought that for all of Colombia’s first runner ups, Carolina and Ariadna have been the ones that deserve the most to win . I still don’t get why Carolina didn’t get my country’s second crown

Hola Luis! Every year, I look for Colombia to place if not take the crown. Since 1992, Colombia has always been on my radar. As you said, Carolina and Ariadna were the most deserving. Carolina's problem was that Sushmita Sen knocked the ball out of the park with the final question. After Sushmita Sen answered the question, it was all over.
because she was up against Sushmita Sen! If she would’ve competed in another year she would’ve won. You see how happy she was for Sushmita when she won? That tells a lot about her! Winner or not she’s an amazing woman but the crown was for Sushmita!
If you decide to add Miss America you can start with New York having the record 7 winners including The 1st African American Winner in 1984, The historical 3 peat of HAGAN DAVULURI KAZANTAV also Treatment of Miss America 2019, having the 1st Jewish, Indian winners also arguably most placements.... Also a Video on the 4 Miss USA who didn't place. Barbara Peterson, Kim Pressler and Shantay Hinton if they had top 15 or 20 they would have placed... In 1994 when MU was held in Manila, the most loved delegate was Miss Belgium Christelle Roelandts. But Minorka Mercado of Venezuela was the most favorite to win that year.

Halle Berry represented Ohio in the Miss USA contest in 1986 and was first runner up to Miss Texas Christy Fichtner who went on the be first runner-up herself that same year at MU.
the PHILIPPINES LOVE MU 1993 Dayanara Torres till now ..she became a very famous host actress here for like 6yrs..before marrying Marc Antony..BUT during the 93 pageant, i wanted COLOMBIA to win..and honestly during the 94 MU I rooted for COLOMBIA too.. i loved her performances...and our then VP had a huge crush on her too..😍Venezuela was a bit overconfident that she'LL get d crown as evident in her shocked facial expression when she's called as 2nd RU..BUT when INDIA delivered her winning piece i was blown out...SHE DEF NAILED IT...and i think Gomez isn't actually hoping she would win granting the 2 consecutive almost wins of their delegates..
Well, actually Colombia typically selects their MU representative the year before, so at Señorita Colombia 2014 Paulina was in fact giving up her title to Ariadna... and we all know how that ended at MU 2015!
1:34 Sadly would have to agree that there was a time that Colombia was unfairly known and was misjudged as a nation for its "drug-related issues" rather than their excellent coffee production.
India won both Miss Universe and Miss World the same year 2 times, in 1994 and 2000! In 2000, Miss India top 3 won their respective International pageants - Miss Universe, Miss World and Miss Asia Pacific. India also won back to back Miss World in 1999 and 2000, winning 4 Miss World crowns in just 7 years!
Re: MUSA 1988 , MUSA 1989 and MUVEN 1988-- It's interesting that these women wore the very same evening gowns from the local pageant finals and for finals at Miss Universe. This, in my opinion, was indeed being frugal and looking glamorous without spending an outrageous amount of money.
Colombia really did well however every final q&a other countries specially who was crowned miss universe are really great. Like what happened to 2008, I love Colombia more in swimsuit & evening however in q&a obviously Venezuela killed it ☺️☺️ Anyway the back to back crowning of dayanara Torres & sushmita became philippines’ top favorite winners too. That’s why up to this date these two beauty queens are well known here in the Philippines aside from pia & catriona 😘😘
Srta. Colombia 2014 hosted by three second-placers may have been Paulina Vega's lucky charm! Also, two of her predecessors (well, almost) had the same name-- Paula (Turbay and Bentancourt). I just noticed this only now.

With respect, Miss Puerto Rico shocked me with her top 6 placement, let alone a win. My pic that night was Miss Venezuela for the win with Miss Colombia coming in second.
I was a college student in 1994 when the most gorgeous ladies of the universe graced our country with their presence. Carolina Gomez stole the hearts of the Filipino nation. Crown or No Crown, in my book, she is still the most beautiful to have ever competed on the Miss Universe stage. 👑❤️
I replied, almost the same exact thing as you. I’m Filipino American ( but of course, always root for Miss Philippines 1st and foremost.) But, that year, Carolina Gomez stole my heart, and I’ve never forgotten her. Sometimes, even now, when watching Miss U, I look for the candidate that makes me feel the way Carolina did.

Sushmita and Aishwarya tied during the finals of Miss India 1994 and they were both asked another question. Sushmita was really articulate and answered with so much substance both at Miss India and Miss Universe. I am wondering what if Aishwarya competed at Miss Universe and Sushmita at Miss World???
Sushmita would’ve won Miss World. Aishwarya didn’t have the same level of competition that Sushmita did. One can only speculate if Aish will win at MU considering the top 6 question format had laid low heavy favorites like Carolina Iszak and Verna Vasquez. I wonder if she would’ve given such a profound answer like Sushmita did. I think her winning at MU is less certain than Sushmita at Miss World.
Destiny intervened and each was sent to the most appropriate contest for their particular set of skills. A double win at MW and MU is near to impossible and it goes to show how special each of these women were at that time and still are today.
@@ML-xh6rd I agree. I was expecting that to happen again last year when Harnaaz won. However, India did not win the MW title.
@@PING1313 -- I don't really follow MW but I heard about this year's MW India and there being a good chance she could make it to the finals and possibly secure the crown. It was not to be but as I mentioned, the odds of it happening are so low it's actually surprising it's ever happened at all. But it's wonderful that it happened for India in 1994 as Sushmita and Aish are phenomenal women and really do represent the best of pagentry from those years.
@@ML-xh6rd It was just an observation in the pageant world and fanatics that everytime India wins MU, they also win MW in the same year; Sushmita and Aishwarya in 1994 and Lara and Priyanka in 2000.

The Colombian situation at the 90's influenced the result, Carolina Gómez has been the best candidate from Colombia so far and was robbed big time! Her reaction to the result was iconic, humbleness and empaphy!
Carolina Gomez was not robbed. Although, I am rooting for her to win. The final QandA performance affect their score. Based on the their answer in the top 3, Sushmita deserve to win as her answer show more substance.
I think Ms Columbia 1993 was the candidate robbed big time. I was shocked when Puerto Rico announced as a winner wherein Columbia's answer was way better. Puerto Rico response was too shallow. Maybe the judges preferred a fresh and young beauty that time. Columbia's beauty was too strong and fierce that others might got intimidated to her.

LOVE this. I am a pageant nerd, as well. Became obsessed with them around 1988 and fell off around 1995-96 (with my pure obsession). But I am well-versed in the history and, I still watch any pageant whenever they happen to be on TV. As for the 1992-1994 stretch with Miss Colombia. I am fine with each winner, but agree that each of those Miss Colombias would have made amazing winners.

I’ve watched your other videos but it’s only now I’ve seen this. Indeed interesting enough to have its own video. Personally, very interesting for me as well because, I was rooting for India’s first win through Madhu over Namibia’s Michelle (first win as well though); I love Venezuela’s Milka, but was so much impressed by Colombia’s Betancourt’s (my choice for MU) answer over PR’s Dayanara’s- so this was an upset for me; and from what I gather, a very interesting story regarding the top 3 in Manila - Venezuela’s Minorka as the crowd and fashion industry favourite and perceived front runner, Colombia’s Carolina as the judges and beauty pageants experts choice, prelims top scorer hence actual front runner of the 3 (Greece I think was the top scorer in the prelims), and India’s Sushmita’s first win in MU (I love first wins stories) and her back story win at Femina over eventual MW Ashwaira is a story for the books in the world of pageantry (imho, these back stories made Sushmita a very strong dark horse in MU vs the other 2; in a poll conducted with at least 10 Filipino celebrities, choices for the top 10 finalists always included Venezuela and Colombia. India, if am not mistaken was only mentioned once ). I love the eventual MU winners, but the Colombians would had been a great choice as well, specially Carolina 😊
I honestly believe that the ordinals for the Top 3 for the 1993 competition must've been all over the map with Dayanara gaining enough 1s and 2s, but I remember seeing one judge awarding her a "3" when the camera angle was behind one of the judges. Each contestant must have had a nearly equal smattering of 1s, 2s and 3s with Dayanara edging out the win.

@@jja8750 I think 1993 was a very close year. Dayanara probably won by having one #2 ranking over the others. Would not be surprised once the ranks are added up, Dayanara won with the lowest score by virtue of only 1 over Colombia and 2 over Venezuela.

Columbia holds the record for the most number of 1st runner up placements in all of MU history. While its neighbour Venezuela has the most crowns in MU history.

Actually Colombia and Venezuela both have six first runner ups, while USA has both the most amount of first runner ups (9) and Miss Universes (8) in MU history. Venezuela is right behind them with seven crowns.

1994 was a difficult year to judge and guess. Both Carolina and Sushmita did exceedingly well in all aspects of the competition. Many Filipinos were won over by Carolina's natural charm, intelligence, beauty and grace. But in the end Sushmita streaked to the final leg of the competition like the magical star that she is. To this day, Filipinos love both beauties, so different from each other yet so much alike in their power to win the heart of an entire nation, the universe rather.
I think Miss Colombia should have won the crown over Miss Puerto Rico, based on every segments throughout the competition, even the final question!

Colombia also did an amazing streak in the 2010s almost like Venezuela in the 90s, that is, winning the crown (2014), virreina in 2015, deuxieme dauphine in 2016, then virreina again in 2017. Hehe

In 1992, Venezuela was indeed the heavy favorite but once she was out of the top 3, the crown was up for grabs. India bombed the final question while the judges already favored Namibia over Colombia as she outscored her in swimsuit and evening gown. 1993 was a year with no clear favorites and Dayanara Torres started to catch the judges’ attention in the top 6 question round. In 1994, while Colombia may have ranked first in the preliminary, it was Greece, that was the preliminary favorite as she won both swimsuit and gown and India outscored Colombia in swimsuit and interview. So her supposed lead was tenuous at best.

Hola Luis! Every year, I look for Colombia to place if not take the crown. Since 1992, Colombia has always been on my radar. As you said, Carolina and Ariadna were the most deserving. Carolina's problem was that Sushmita Sen knocked the ball out of the park with the final question. After Sushmita Sen answered the question, it was all over.

the PHILIPPINES LOVE MU 1993 Dayanara Torres till now ..she became a very famous host actress here for like 6yrs..before marrying Marc Antony..BUT during the 93 pageant, i wanted COLOMBIA to win..and honestly during the 94 MU I rooted for COLOMBIA too.. i loved her performances...and our then VP had a huge crush on her too..😍Venezuela was a bit overconfident that she'LL get d crown as evident in her shocked facial expression when she's called as 2nd RU..BUT when INDIA delivered her winning piece i was blown out...SHE DEF NAILED IT...and i think Gomez isn't actually hoping she would win granting the 2 consecutive almost wins of their delegates..

Well, actually Colombia typically selects their MU representative the year before, so at Señorita Colombia 2014 Paulina was in fact giving up her title to Ariadna... and we all know how that ended at MU 2015!
1:34 Sadly would have to agree that there was a time that Colombia was unfairly known and was misjudged as a nation for its "drug-related issues" rather than their excellent coffee production.
India won both Miss Universe and Miss World the same year 2 times, in 1994 and 2000! In 2000, Miss India top 3 won their respective International pageants - Miss Universe, Miss World and Miss Asia Pacific. India also won back to back Miss World in 1999 and 2000, winning 4 Miss World crowns in just 7 years!

Re: MUSA 1988 , MUSA 1989 and MUVEN 1988-- It's interesting that these women wore the very same evening gowns from the local pageant finals and for finals at Miss Universe. This, in my opinion, was indeed being frugal and looking glamorous without spending an outrageous amount of money.

Colombia really did well however every final q&a other countries specially who was crowned miss universe are really great. Like what happened to 2008, I love Colombia more in swimsuit & evening however in q&a obviously Venezuela killed it ☺️☺️
Anyway the back to back crowning of dayanara Torres & sushmita became philippines’ top favorite winners too. That’s why up to this date these two beauty queens are well known here in the Philippines aside from pia & catriona 😘😘
