Singer 201 2 1948 A fully functional antique. Works better than new sewing machines.

- This is a 1948 Singer 201-2.
I'll demonstrate the function of various parts of the machine and sew several different samples. Shirting, Denim and Leather.
Every single one of these videos on the Singer 201 I can find on UA-cam, I think I've watched. Two things have become apparent:
1) this machine is eerily quiet and smooth. It looks like sewing on it is really conducive to focus and concentration.
2) The stitch from a well-tuned machine is as close to perfect as you could ask. The bottom stitch and top stitch look identical.
That's why I finally bought one, a 201K24, a brown-and-tan post-facelift model with the more modern styling. It should be delivered tomorrow. I can't wait!
I just picked up a 1949 Singer that I believe is a 201 for my leatherworking business. Can’t wait to get it going!
How's it working out? I've heard these machines aren't the best for anything more than 6oz leather but am curious about using them for leather working myself
For leather this is not a good option get an industrial machine with walking foot for leather.this machine is built for lighter fabrics too much load could damage the internals
I don't understand why quality in modern machines (not just in sewing machines) has gone away. Actually, I do understand how, I just don't understand _why_ we allowed it to happen.
Anyhow, there is a flea-mart not far from here, and there is a booth run by an older guy who is a retired engineer. He developed a passion for sewing machines because of their intricacy of design. I brought my Singer in to him for a service, and he happily offered me a lesson and a history. Watching these videos makes me want to go find him and look for a better machine that is more suitable to my projects (and taste), but I'm caught in that trap of _this works well enough for now._
pocket83 If I were to attempt to answer the why portion of your comment in half a sentence it would be, that is the difference between a democracy and a republic that has devolved into oligarchy.
Dang, I told myself that I would not get into politics on this channel, see what you made me do. lol
lol...
Alexander Dyer that is the most succinct explanation of our current troubles and I've heard.
Alexander Dyer , well said.
The 201 is legendary! It's considered the finest crafted machine ever produced by Singer and it lives up to it's reputation! I was lucky to find one through a friend and I wouldn't trade it for all of the computerized junk they make today! It's a pity that what was once the greatest name in sewing machine history now produces plastic junk from China!
Very well said. I bought a new Hertiage Singer and nearly threw it in the bin. Then I went on marketplace and found a Singer 103k. 70 years old. Perfect. Built like a tank and it gets the job done.
The now old sewing machines were built to last. It's amazing how many vintage Singers are still beautifully sewing away, even the treadles. Really you can name any of the sewing machine brands, that are stilling sewing great. The German and Swiss machines, with names that many of us would recognize, are works of art, and still sewing away. Three current or relatively current brands that have earned reputations for quality, are Janome, Kenmore, and Brother. Sears Kenmore machines will work forever it seems, and why not they were manufactured by Janome. They aren't manufactured anymore, but there are still many around and sewing beautifully. Brother makes a great machine, at a lower price point. Singers have really went down in quality, in my opinion.
I have a mechanical Janome and a Computerized Brother, they are both great, but the mechanical machines will work forever, without worrying about the computer malfunctioning.
I just acquired a 1950 201-2 set into the original cabinet. I took it right into SewPros and they were impressed with how nice it was. I get her back on Friday and they feel in full restoration. I am so excited.
Nice.
I just found a beautiful Singer 201-2 (1949) and can't wait to use it! Thank you for your step-by-step. Very helpful.
It’s interesting to see how you operate and service these wonderful machines with great skill . I just started to sew at a late age ,knew nothing about sewing machines ,didn’t do enough proper research and bought a Singer 6180 because of the name . It is of course very poor and right at the bottom of the league. I wasted my money ( I am a pensioner) but it just about does the job and for the moment I can’t afford to buy a better made more reliable machine ... so a cautionary tale here . Thanks again for taking the time to do these tutorials ... you clearly have wonderful patience and love for theses pieces .
This is my exact machine. I sewed my wedding dress on it as well as leather.
That's cool.
How much cast this meashine
This brings back memories of growing up in Mexico, my mom made our uniforms in this machine, ours were some of the best uniforms in the whole school… the stuff they now sell is junk, thankfully I was recently gifted the 401A that belonged to my mother in law.
Good memories.🍀
When winding the bobbin, you can run the thread from your external stand through the first loop at the front of the machine - should give a better path through the friction discs. Saw it on another 201 video. Just got mine and absolutely love it although the motor was really slow so I've set it into an industrial table with a 1/2hp mechanical clutch motor - very controllable and powerful
I have this one. I Love it.
Would love one of these! If I can’t get our antique treadle singer fixed up. I’ll look for one of these!
I just bought one of these and this is so helpful!! Thank you sooo much!
edgehabitat where do you bought this kind of the machine?
I just love this machine, there's no way my Toyota would be able to sew even 2 layers of denim or leather for that matter, makes me want to buy an older machine as they were built to last a lifetime
My 66 1950 singer will do any job that one will do but as far as the old Japanese machines I have a 1968 r i c c a r that is just as smooth and crafted just as fine as machine. It even has an active zig zag bobbin there zigzags along with the rest of it
That motor probably doesn't hum on low speed
Best explanation of that particular stitch length adjustment system. Very clear, very concise, nicely demonstrated. Thanks.
Thank you. Tell all your friends :)
Yessssss! Finally someone to explain to me how the stitch regulator works!
Thanks for the explanation on how to adjust the stitch length, it was very useful to me! Wonderful video! Cheers!
Excellent video ! I've just bought one of these . Thanks very much. Colin UK
Enjoy!
Great video!! You did a wonderful job!
Thank you.
Thank you for your video
That would be vintage. Antique is over 100 years old, and I'm not there yet.
- perfectly.
Thank you!
I have one born in 1941, someone rewired it and jacked up the stator, I’m waiting on a replacement. I can’t wait to start using it
I like how thoroughly you demonstrate this and other machines. I enjoy this video especially because I have a 201-2, which I love using, and watching you demonstrate it makes me realize how fortunate I am to sew with this vintage machine. I hope to be getting a Singer 316G soon. G for Germany, as you probably know, because a Singer opened a factory there after WWII, to help the closed off society rebuild after the war.
A couple of real solid machines, congrats.
You can paint those numbers in again with gold acrylic paint then dry it clean again
Thank you .
My aunt has a 1941 model 66-16 singer with cabinet. Her cabinet has a knee lift but not for the presser lift! Her knee lift is used for sewing! Can you tell me if there were any like those built. Her’s is mint condition? Also is a top drop in bobbin. How much is hers worth? Thanks.
Singer 66. There were 55,000 made in 1941 at Elizabethport. There are many of these machines still left and the knee operated transmitter is a standard feature in cabinet mounted machines. As to its worth, if you need to sew your own clothing it is priceless.
We have this kind of sewing machine but the metal part where you will put the bobbin case is missing. When you slide the cover, its empty, nowhere to put the bobbin case because its empty as a hole. Where can we purchase that bobbin case? Thanks
I am wondering how well this machine will feed two layers of leather when both right-side-up faces are pressed together. I know this machine will not substitute for a walking-foot machine entirely but would like to know if it can do a decent enough job to make some leather bags.
If you go on Amazon and look at the new models of all brands - from the $150 units all the way up to over $1000 ones, click to see the 1 star reviews first and be shocked. All models and brands have people saying the troubles started either right away, either after 6 months or so. And then the BIG trouble trying to have it servicing beings. It is mind-blowing that there is no new model or brand that can last a few years without issues. I'll take with my eyes closed any older machine made from the 40s to 60s with metal gears and no belts that was not abused
nice! i just got a 15-9 1948- it keeps snappn the line, bunching up on the bottom, looks like it stitches but doesnt. i think it might be the old spools it came with. i'll try to get new thread and try to see if that fixes it. i've tried all ranges of tention and cleaned em. it's my first machine, and it's been frustrating a bit, but im open to suggestions
+Kriswixx Many describe the bunching up of stitches as "rats nest" , nice term right. This is a common and easy fix. Usually the cause is your tension being too loose. Make sure your thread is seated deep into the tensioner and go from there. Good Machine. Good Luck.
Yes I have found that many problems concerning the thread or stitches doing strange things, is because the tension isn't set right, or working properly, which usually goes back to the bobbin not being inserted and setup properly, or it wasn't wound correctly. I know the tension was my biggest pain, when things weren't going right!... lol
I realize you've probably resolved your issue by now, but I just thought I'd add that sometimes it's actually because your needle is in backwards, with the flat side facing the opposite direction. I spent a year monkeying about with the thread tension, then saw this suggestion somewhere, took out my needle, and lo-and-behold, it was in backwards. Turned it right-way-round and it sewed a nice seam with no rats' nests! Such a simple and stupid little thing, but it really messes things up.
Very Good!.
I just picked up a 1948 201k machine in a cabinet, it had the usual bits and bobs, books, bobbins, feet, etc and a red box with a huge foot in it. The box had a zig zag pattern on the top. Can a 201k do a zig zag? It also had an original 1948 tube of motor lubricant. It has a treadle foot and motor with light. It had a new power cable and the light worked. I want to clean it all and check everything before we try sewing. All for £40, very happy to have a new project.
Cool, sounds like fun and that cam does not belong to the 201, Straight stitch only.
@@AlexanderDyer - I don't know about that - I have my grandmother's 201 (I can't remember if it's a 201-2 or a 201-4 - it has the motor on the back rather than the side like the one in your video here), and when my aunt passed it on to me, she explained how all the bits and bobs worked, including a zig zag attachment, which I have used occasionally. It works similar to the buttonhole attachment, with a plate to block the machine's feed dogs so the attachment can move the fabric from side-to-side to make zig-zags.
Manufactured back when things were made to last forever. Plastic machines break down after several years which means you have to replace it. Which is how they plan it. It's still more accurate than heavy duty modern industrial ones. When I was at FIDM I tried using one of their pro machines for students and I was like; "What the hell is this?!" It was a POS! I took my projects home and sewed them on my Singer Featherweight for accurate stitching.
Castaway, what is FIDM and POS? Thank you.
Is the number 201 marked somewhere on the machine itself?
Is it only on the Manual?
To avoid confusing folks, please remember for a sewing machine to be considered an ANTIQUE, it needs to be 100 years old, or older..You're 33 years short of that milestone at the time your video was published.
What's the difference between a Singer 201 and a 201-2 ?

And I wanted to clean the needle bar so I unscrewed the needle clamp to remove the needle. I wiped it clean, inserted the needle, as high it can go flat side facing left. I screw the needle clamp. But the the needle clamp feels loose and and the needle just slipped out. I don’t know what to do. The needle clamp has a tiny flat screw on the left of the needle clamp. I unscrewed that and re-screwed it but still the same thing. I don’t know what to do? Help!
Just relax and take your time fully observe what is happening when you operate the clamp. Do you have a Manual? If not I think you can find one online for free. Read the directions and you will be fine.
@@AlexanderDyer Do you think that gladtidings4all forgot to replace the lower thread guide? Without the lower thread guide in the needle clamp assembly, the needle clamp will not clamp onto the needle and the needle would slip out.
There are several good UA-cam tutorials on how to properly reassemble the lower thread guide into the needle clamp assembly of a Singer sewing machine.
@@ibsoarin Very good point. Feel free to post any links here. Thanks
@@AlexanderDyer The easiest and most concise tutorial about Singer needle clamp assembly with specific reference to the lower thread guide is through this link, Needle Clamp & Thread Guide Replacement -

Thank you for all the videos you post to help people appreciate and restore their sewing machines.
I have this machine, could you tell me how do i replace a light bulb in this machine?
Should just be a bayonet fitting BA15D - you can buy LED bulbs which won't get so hot and can give more light
A lady had a really nice machine that had never been used still in the box 1970..she said it works but very slow and I asked her if she put any oil in it and she said I didn't know they used oil.. I sent her some pictures of oiling spots probably freaked her out
I just bought a 201-2 in the cabinet at a yard sale. 1946 serial date. It appears to be hard wired. How do I remove it from the original cabinet to have it serviced? Can it be a portable? Thank you.
Portable? Yes. Watch this video where I do the thing you ask about. ua-cam.com/video/9nLpvw2M40A/v-deo.html
They should still make this
Can you safely sew on leather; without damaging the machine??
yes, its strong. You won't hurt the machine to try it but it is not going to make any saddles or shoes.
What thread weight and needle are you using for the leather and denim? My machine struggles to sew through those thicknesses even with a Singer leather and denim needle. What adjustments do I need to make on my machine? Thank you!
Man, I don't know, that was like 8 years ago. I do know I just use a standard needle rather than a leather point. I doubt that would be the cause of your issue though. Weak motor, or your machine needs cleaned and oiled. Your machine should spin very free and easy.
Thank you for this wonderful presentation.
I own this Singer. How do I adjust the machine to make a basting stitch?
I have a 201-2 - Did this version come with attachments, i,e, a zigzag stitch? Also, can I buy a different foot pedal? Thank you!
I have had different attachments like button holers and zig zaggers. I think there were quite a few feet made for these with folders and binders and guides. Lots and lots. Have you tried eBay?
Hi. Please do share with me, where can I purchase one?
you know they made it righf the first time when yours was built in 1948 and my exact same 201 was mafe in 1957 , thats almost 10 years later and not a single change , this is why i collect singers pre 1960 i even have a 1886 fiddle base singer that still sews perfect , mind youit could use a repaint but regardless it still works perfect , i dont know why anyone would buy new or modern i will say , ya theycan do all kinds of fancy patterns but really we strait stitch or zig zag 95 percent of the time so why buy plastic for hundreds that will be crap in 5 years when you can buy vintage for pennies and have it for ever .....
how do i sell one of these? i cant find anyone local that wants it
Did you sell it?

Hi, how could i find out the model of my singer?
Use the serial number. ismacs.net/singer_sewing_machine_company/serial-numbers/singer-sewing-machine-serial-number-database.html
How to move the needle position from left to right.
How do you remove a broken flush top spool pin? I don’t know what to do ,I don’t want to do any damage. I am stuck.
Forgot to tell is a 1951
You might need to drill it out. Be super careful it is a precarious procedure for sure.

Yeah, on my website. alexanderdyer.work/uploads/manuals/Singer-201-Service-Adjusters-Manual.pdf

I miss the sound coming out of it, really.
Is it possible to get these old model mechanics now? I am used to foot pressure mechine so I love them the way they work kindly if these type of mechine available for sale kindly send me put up in the description box pls.
In my opinion the best way to get one is to watch your local second hand sales. Many were made and I see them not frequently but with some regularity. I am unaware of a retail seller of this model.
It's a work horse !!
One thing that's safe to say, they sure don't make them like they used to.
Are these better than 201k

Nice machine I would rather have my 66 with a motor that I can change out in 10 minutes.. that machine has the same rotary bobbin and I don't know if it oscillates or spins but it's not a factor for me. It looks like a 66 with a different front and probably the bottom end is a lot different .

It's NOT an antique, antiques are, by definition, over 100 years old.
Respectfully, I don't think that definition applies. In cars it is somewhere between 25 to 45 years old and I think a sewing machine should fall somewhere between an antique car and an antique chair for example since they are more akin to an automobile than a handicraft that could be produced in someone's home. No a sewing machine requires huge factories and forged steel and engineering, machining and supply chains. Way way way more involved than an apron that some great grandmother made one afternoon. You are not the first to stamp their foot about this but I'll stick with antique sewing machine on this one. Peace.
@@AlexanderDyer you really need to learn the difference between antique and vintage.
👌
Antiques = over 100 years old. Yours is not an antique.
