That was a good description of the ERV application process. You might want to consider going beyond it and informing people that they need to register in Italy within eight days of their arrival.

I'm curious as to why dividends are acceptable and the interest from stocks is not? Dividends comes from stocks and those stocks can be sold just like stocks used to generate returns.

This is exactly what I was thinking about. Right now I'm in Motta SantAnastasia, Sicily. I have a signed lease on a beautiful apartment. I am a retired USN LCDR and a70% disabled veteran. I also recieve Social Security at $3600 per month. My mother died in June 2024 and I inherited approximately $200,000. I have already put $100,000 in an annuity that will supply another source of monthly income. $50,000 is in a high interest savings account. My military retirement is $36,000. Needless to say I have passive income.
I was stationed here in Sicily from 1993 to early 1996. I have returned to Sicily 5 times since my retirement in 1999.
I am a board member of The Sicilian Project which affords young and old a working knowledge of English. If I am going to live here, it is my duty to contribute.
My grandfather, Piero Sorrentino was born and raised in Marsala. I feel his presence each and everyday.
Where do you think I stand?
    James Ingram

Ciao James, thanks for reaching out and sharing your story. One thing we'll point out is that if you're planning to make use of a long-term rental in Italy, you'll need EU citizenship or a visa and residence permit; if not, you'll be limited to 90 days in 180 day periods, Italy/Schengen Area. With the information you provided, the Elective Residency Visa could be perfect for you. You can email us at ciao@smartmoveitaly.com for more info and explore our services here, if seeking assistance smartmoveitaly.com/ervassistance
Another option is pursuing your Italian citizenship by descent! There's a case type called the comune case, aka fast track, which allows you to claim residency during the process, visa free. We just need to make sure your ancestor didn't naturalize too soon and that all the required records are attainable. Learn more here smartmoveitaly.com/citizenship

In response to my last email...this will be a long-term lease from a very close family friend. The owners don't normally rent the apartment but want someone in it full-time. Since I am single and want to live in a town I know very well, the family has agreed to my living here. The rent is $900 per month.

So much great info! My only concern now is the $ because the person who we spoke with gave us completely different info (36k single, 48k married couple and each child was about 18k)
We haven't had anyone who could tell us what we need to do for our kids visas (16 and 9) They just give us the price for ERC, but I don't think that's correct because my boys aren't going to be retired. Do the kids get student? I have sooooo many questions (and i have been asking people and researching for 4 yrs now)
