- We're not sure for whom this film was intended-this was long before the day when college videos were used for courting prospective students. It was produced for the Vassar College Bureau of Publication by Jules Bucher and Willard Pictures and covers all aspects of college life, from arrival on campus to academics to campus jobs to commencement. Several legendary Vassar professors make appearances-see if you can spot Hallie Flanagan and Leila Barber. The original film was silent. This version was created by the Office of Communications for Vassar's Sesquicentennial with audio courtesy of the Seeburg 1000 (www.seeburg1000.com).
If the average age of the students in the video is 20, then these young ladies captured here in their youth, so full of life, are now 89 years old. God bless the ones still with us.
My mother (class of ‘47) arrived as a freshman one year later. She’s still lively at 95 and can tell you all about it, especially the wartime aspect. It’s a vanished world although much of the campus looks identical to the present day.
@drh4683 Thanks so much! We weren't aware that seeburg 1000 obtained the tunes from your uploads. What a great service you've done, preserving this music. We thought it was perfect for this 1943 film.
Since this film wasn't used for recruiting purposes, maybe it was shown to new students so they would know what to expect. It does seem to focus as an introduction to life on the campus rather than as a means of attracting prospective students.
This is a very nice film. However, seeburg1000 obtained all of the tunes used in this film from my Seeburg Background Music uploads here on youtube... I'm pleased to see these tunes used to accompany such historical footage.
