The footing was roughly a 12" circle about 42"+ deep that I formed into a 12"x12" square at grade for the pergola post to attach to. The square portion of the footing was roughly 9" deep. You can see the completed footing in this video prior to installing the patio. ua-cam.com/video/Jn03bYvkwwY/v-deo.html You will not want to go any smaller than 12"x12" footing as the anchors will be too close to the footing edge and may break out of the footing.
do you think its important to secure the bottom to something or is it heavy enough to stand on its own? I am putting mine on my deck, not sure if I want to put holes in the deck.
Yes, I do believe it is important to secure the pergola. The pergola is heavy, but depending on the type of wind you could get, it could still blow and damage your deck and the pergola.
You didn't show how to attach the leg posts after putting the top frame on it. We're trying to re-assemble a Hampton Bay pergola very similar to yours but the top beams keep falling when we only partially screw in at connection points, so we duct-taped the posts to the top frame beams to try to stop them from falling since we aren't anchoring posts in cement. Any tips since the video diesn't show how you raised it?
I don't know how hot in your area. Did your pergola steel get really hot in summer? I want to buy pergola. But don't know which one worst. Steel metal or aluminum.
We can see 100 F during the summer with mid 90F common. The post will get warm to the touch, but not hot enough to hurt. I would assume color would impact this as well. I would guess white would be the best while black would tend to be the hottest to the touch.
Got this same pergola, similar paver setup already installed. I need to figure out anchoring as well, I'm guessing you would say that the way you did it is the best/easiest?
Before I put the patio in, I dug and poured 4 footings 48" deep. The posts of the pergola sit on these footings. I secured the posts of the pergola to these footings by using concrete anchors. Video for that will be coming soon.
@@blood_sweat_and_beers I bought a house with a patio already installed (pavers are Sony to yours) and looking to install pergola. Do I need to pull up the pavers to pour concrete for the footings? Thanks.
@@DetroitCity9 Yes, you will need to pull up the pavers and pour 4 footings for your pergola. The pavers will support the pergola, but they will not sufficiently anchor the structure to the ground and if you get any wind, your pergola could take flight. the size of your footings will depend on your frost line and the size of your pergola posts. The footings I poured in this video were just under 12"x12".

Hoping there's a better way than taking the pavers out and digging a 4 foot hole. The pergola weighs 600 lbs, I was hoping it would not fly away, but I don't know. Maybe I can drive some sort of rod into the ground to anchor the pavers, the attach the pergola to the pavers.

To securely anchor the pergola, you will need to remove pavers to dig a hole for your concrete footing.

I don't believe there is any other way to anchor the pergola security without the footing.

Do you have a video on strapping the shade to the pergola? Mine do not stay tight
