Isn’t it disappointing when people give you radios that work 😊 They should be more accommodating to restorers 😂 Hope you’re still enjoying your travels.

    YES YES AND YES Dave.
Take it home and redo it.
That Mullard deserves the Tipton Transformation Treatment.
    I LOVE the Mullard radios.
Im betting you could clean up that case and perhaps give it a gloss coat of clear paint and make it look a million bucks.

Lucky Dave, 2 out of three radios working, not bad
👍 The Paillard is Swiss made BTW, was an upmarket brand back then. I could not help notice the beautiful tortoiseshell pattern on the Mullard bakelite when it was wet. There is a stuff for sale here in Germany called "Owatrol" and they also sell a plastic reviver for car bumpers and such. Makes weathered bakelite look like new because it fills up the pores and then goes hard. That Plain Jane Mullard could become a real beaut... BTW, let me know when you are home again, there is something set to go 🙂 Cheers from Deutschland, have a safe trip..

Hi Blitz. Yes, I have been corrected on the country of origin. We can get Owatrol here but there are a number of products available, which one should I use? Ok, won't be home for few weeks yet. We have covide so treading water until that passes 🙄 Thanks Blitz.

Hi Dave, It's amazing how these old radios just want to work!
Pity the Paillard didn't go straight off but these continental ones do tend to have a bit of attitude.

    • @DavidTipton101
      @DavidTipton101  8 місяців тому +1

I agree zx8401ztv, the Mullard name is synonymous with old radios. They were what diodes looked like back in the day 🙂

I have a book called " Everymans wireless by f j Cam " And a Oldham press from millions of years ago. The valves were very odd looking, some had screw terminals on the side of the base, really odd. Different but not.
The capacitors were oblong boxes with terminals on the top, i think ill stay with modern solder types.
      Sorry Waffle mode lol.

"Full Shango"!? What is that? Had to look up that on Wiki and Urban dictionary...Ahhh Rubbish! or Excitement!. Had a good laugh that you had a "take a long" emergency repair kit for your travels. Hi Neil, sorry for the confusion regarding Shango. I flashed an explanation on screen when I said it. Shango066 is a electronics repairer on UA-cam who works outdoors in his yard with all the noise and odd lighting that goes with it. I have a grab and go kit of tools I take with me when I travel, it comes in handy. It has sockets and spanners, screwdrivers, DMM... stuff like that. I use it every time, someone will ask me to have a look at something when I visit them 😄 Cheers!

One of the things I really miss about living in Britain is the pubs. One of the things I loved was the "guest brews." Just a few random kegs they had for the week. Great thing about that part of the world is every region has their beer. Wife and I loved trying what each town had to offer.

My wife refuses to learn the metric system so I know how 80% of the population in the US is thinking. As an HVAC service tech and mechanic, I wish we would just rip that band-aid off and convert to metric.

Hello Larry, Mullard were based in the UK and were wholly owned by Philips. They were one of the biggest valve manufacturers in Europe so it's no wonder they were known for they valves and not radios outside of the UK. This radio is a rebadged Philips Australia. This is typical Melbourne weather, hot winds from the desert push temps over 104F then the wind swings around and comes across the bay and the temp drop 60F in 15 minutes. It's very uncomfortably hot then uncomfortably cold 🙄🙂

2 old working radios out of 3 ain't a bad score, granted they might not look as nice as other projects you've done or have on the back burner, but personally i'd really like to see what you would do to improve the Mullard's Bakelite finish. As you know i had issues with a Grundig bakelite cabinet recently, so i would more than welcome the knowledge. Hi David, those Mullards and the Philips equivalent perform well, but for some reason the Mullard cases go bad, The old shoe polish usually works! At least the dial glass isn't broken - they usually are. Should be easy to reproduce. Funny I've been fixing a Swedish made Philips this afternoon. Your Swed looks to have Philips knobs,
