After the release of Yakuza 8, and with their partnership with Atlus, SEGA has more than enough money to help YsNet finish the Shenmue series. What if YsNet approached RGG Studios, for the 2 teams to work together on future Shenmue titles? Hope to that reality, quite possibly.
All fine.. but then shenmue 3 barely sold 300,000 copies. I doubt any studio wants to take this on unless Yu can conclude the story line. Playing through 3 for the first time now. It's ahhh definitely shenmue 😅
Shenmue 3 was held back for two factors. Number 1, it was a Playstation exclusive, and most Shenmue fans are over on Xbox, not Playstation. Second, the game definitely needs an overhaul to fix everything that is wrong with the game. Shenmue 3 can be fixed, but there has to be a budget for it. If Sega had supported the Shenmue 3, the game would've been a success. Kick Srarter is not the way to go for a game like Shenmue. The Shenmue series needs a bigger budget than what it had.
@@JuanDiaz-jo1rw the games are trash by today's standards. A small trip down nostalgia lane i.e. replaying 1 and 2 on dreamcast will showcase this. Navigating a 3d world with a dpad...terrible. I enjoyed my playthrough of 1 and 2 and even enjoying my run through 3 as we speak. Three is every bit true to the shenmue formula and it was reviewed as such. Even if there was a bigger budget to clean up combat and dialog trees etc it still wouldn't be well received by newcomers. A game like yakuza does everything shenmue can or does but better. Mission driven, good story, good combat etc. I would play 4 if they released it just because.. but it's not likely. Shenmue 1 and 2 never broke 1 million copies of i remember.. nor did the remakes and 3 sold abysmally. At this point, 4 is a long shot.
@7shocker By today's standards, I play them all the time. Same with Shadowman remaster, Tomb Raider, and a bunch of classic remasters that are out. Soul Rever remaster is about to come out with tank controls. Go ahead and tell me that the Legacy of Kain series doesn't have a huge fan base just because of tank controls. With that said, you are the minority who only buys a console to play new games. But the retro game community has millions. Shenmue still has a fan base of 2 million plus. The only reason Shenmue 3 didn't sell much was because it was locked to PS5. But the Shenmue fans that on Nintendo and Xbox haven't gotten a chance to play the game. I'm still waiting for the game to get ported over to Xbox, I don't care how old the game is. Secondly, let's make it clear, there is no game like Shenmue, even by today's standards. The only one that comes close to it is Yakuza. The games are far from being trash. It's not my fault you suck at tank controls. I bet you don't even replay RE1 remake with tank controls. Shenmue 3 was done purposely with tank controls because Yu Suzuki was targeting the Dreamcast gamers, not newcomers. Shenmue 3 was not meant to have modern controls because Suzuki wanted to give their fans the memory lane from the two games. With that said, Shenmue 4 was supposed to have modern controls, and updating the controls on Shenmue 3 on an update is not hard at all. If Sega gives the support for Shenmue 4 and it sells well, we can only hope for Suzuki to fix and update Shenmue 3. You may not like old games, but I do, and so do thousands of people. Shenmue was never meant for newcomers. For them to target that type of audience, they would have to remake the first two games. And I'm not saying it's impossible. But at this point, Yu Suzuki is old, and in his last interview, he said that he would love to finish the 5 games before he passed away. That is his dream. Idk if you are a Shenmue fan or not. But I will support Yu Suzuki till the day he passes away. As a teenager, I always wanted to kick Landi San ass. And I hope we get to play till the end of the Series of Shenmue. By the way, Shenmue 3 sold close to 500,000, not 300,000. With that said, Sega mentioned that they might be picking up the project from Yu Suzuki to make help Shenmue 4 because Suzuki had plenty of meetings with Sega. With that said, Suzuki has the entire game written down. Suzuki knows how the game ends. What he doesn't have is a sponsor to make the games. So, hopefully, Sega gets back on it.
@7shocker Shenmue 1&2 HD release had 150k active players on PS4. Idk know the number for Xbox and Switch. But based on what Sega said about the HD release, it sold like hot cakes, and Sega is pleased with the numbers. So this adds to the sales of the Dremcast and OG Xbox. With that said, back in the day, the Sega Dremcast had a lot of piracy, and ppl were burning copies of Shenmue instead of buying or just renting from BluckBuster. So the game didn't sell well. But not because people didn't like the game. Shenmue HD 1&2 did so well that I think that's why Sega is thinking about sponsoring Yu Suzuki for Shenmue 4. But this time, it will not be an exclusive for Playstation.

@STEVEYTHEEXEEVEE We are a team of people under the banner of Shenmue Dojo and I am one person who fronts the YT video content. So I'll speak for the collective thank you. Also, the game scored 67 on Metacritic. It's average. Not good, not terrible. Has its flaws and is a 7/10 game if there was ever a definition of one. Epic exclusivity is nothing to do with the quality of the game. If many fans didn't want a 4th game then why have we trended 5 months in a row? Why do people continually come out to support the cause? You may not want to and that's fine but let's not pretend you represent the view of the whole community. This site may not either but it represents far more (as do the other community groups) than most. Also why shit on something positive that is trying to be done? We know it may not work. That peace has been made and accepted. I/we would rather go down with the ship than be some miserable person sat in a corner.
We were incredibly luck to even get a Shenmue 3, and it was kind of outdated, tone deaf trash. Can't make a game that has no hope of making back the investment of time and money.
Shenmue 3 did financially fine though as per the publisher. So it comes down to what games produce a greater ROI and making sure Shenmue offers appropriate yield on investment.
@@ShenmueDojoVOD Shenmue 3 had a sizeable Kickstarter backing. Which means it was funded by people that were NOT Sega, who were hoping to see a conclusion to the story - not just another chapter trying to sequel bait. They're not coming back and reinvesting again. Not when they have Yakuza / Like a Dragon that are better and more evolved 'Shenmue' games than 1, 2, or 3.
@MrFuggleGuggle Yakuza games are great games but well and truly a different vibe and feel. Saying everyone moved onto those is a generalisation. Not saying they're not popular, they are, but why can't we have both. As for the kickstarter you are correct in that there was a good chunk of money from it but Deep Silver put in more and made money. Backers may or may not come back but that's not the point. They want a traditional funding route and one can be found with the right business compromise. Also, 3 was never meant to end things you'd be covering 6/7 chapters in one game. Not a chance on that budget.
