3:27 reminds me of another episode of "Black Sheep Squadron" in which half the episode shows the Japanese officer motivating his pilots with the mythological divine wind story. The way he relates the noble sacrifice theme with their situation makes the nervous pilots take heart. It lets you see how someone could find themselves prepared to make such a strike
The scene of the Japanese soldiers singing as they march down to surrender is my favourite rendition of Battotai Also wow, two cats this time! You’re spoiling us, Johnny
Picked this up a few months ago but haven't watched it yet. Definitely moved up on my list. Love the channel, huge movie nut, so love adding things to my list!
This is getting out of hand, now there are two of them! This is the rare movie I've watched that you recently reviewed. I enjoyed it quite a bit tho I was ignorant of the history before this video.
Marine Corporal Rand Henderson died in the famous Banzai charge. His father, Randall Henderson, founder and publisher of Desert Magazine, called up from Army reserves, was stationed in North Africa with the U.S. Army Air Corps, when he received word his only son had died in combat. Henderson then sat down and wrote his son's obituary that appeared in Desert.
If memory serves right, he was a yakuza before the war and doing time for armed robbery or something. He was offered to join to get a cleaner legal slate, should he survive.
i need to watch this, thanks for the tip. I've seen the cave where Shoichi Yokoi fought the war until 1972 on Guam. I've been to Mt. Tapotchao, visited both Banzai and Suicide cliffs. Marianas are most definitely worth a visit.
I'm surprised this movie was this recent, my dad bought it on DVD when I was a kid. I probably saw it once, I had completely forgotten about this until I saw the cover art. Gotta go rummaging around his place soon for the disc. Also, hey Lucas!
Can you make a video about the new The Convert film? I believe its not exactly based on a specific person but it does look like a great historical epic, just wanted to know ur opinion of it
Really good review about a film based on a real life incident also seen this told in other parts and who knows where could do one on Battle of Algiers if you haven't done it yet or this other 1 from the same creator Burn (1969) is another among other topics can do one on MANIPAD Missiles like the SA-7 and Stinger is another and MIG jets can still be good among others even those firebombs used in bombing runs of WWII is also good too. Really is a lot out there.
A bit random, but a month ago me and a few friends got our hand on this movie props. Quality is a bit sub par but we got most of the stuff used by extra for about 300 USD. (About 50 USMC kit and 40 IJA kit.)
2:27 only a hard man could or would even consider staying in the jungle like that. Hopefully the film is able to explore the motivations of these men in depth
@@JohnnyJohnsonHistory With masterpieces like Band of Brothers, Pacific, Generation Kill and John Adams, it's almost difficult to view the miniseries as anything but the best way to portray a subject, particularly the historic. Of course each of the above had huge budgets that are probably (sorry for not looking it up atm) as large if not larger than "blockbuster" movies, so perhaps the feature length film is a workable 2nd option. The box office shows us that 2.5 hours is just about the longest an audience is reasonably willing to sit through; but I can't help but wonder if the rise of streaming previously theatrical releases might pave the way to average movie lengths increasing. I almost never watch a movie all the way through on streaming. It's really nice being able to watch it in 45-60 min chunks. Anyway this isn't an essay so I'll get to the point, maybe filmmakers/studios will find a new model. Something much longer than a traditional film, but not so long/expensive as an five-eight episode miniseries. I'm actually really liking the term "series film" I just thought up! Thanks as always my friend
A very good film and as you say the Americans are very bad actors with no depth. In the end surrender scene they look comical in the way they reacted to the Japanese. (however, I'm sure that in real life they were all waiting for a 'nip' to chuck a grenade!
Oba had his sword returned to him before he died. It is in the possession of Oba's family. Wikipedia.
Captain Nathan Algren has been quiet since this dropped.

*AKTUALLY* It's not Battotai but Hohei no Honryo

JJ does great updates and we all appreciate you helping him out.

Thanks for the call out for this movie, I am going to have to give it a watch
Really good movie and glad someone showed the viewpoint of those Japanese soldiers who resisted after the official surrender throughout the Pacific

Hey Johnny, how about a review about Passchaendalle?
I am very overdue for some Canadian movies it's true. =)

True. And maybe Hyena Road as well.
So happy to discover new WW2 movies, and am an expert…

Love your cats, man :)
Lucas looks funny, what´s up with the ear?
Zwei Katz ? Wunderbar.👍
Zwei katzen
You should make videos reviewing how accurate combat scenes are
I watched it back to back with Letter from iwo Jima.
How about that Japanese holdout soldier that was on Gilligan's Island? I don't see any mention of him in many history books. 😂
He was a deserter who dishonored his family. They insisted he be erased from the records.
a good movie hard to find the book is better
I always recommend reading the book version when applicable. Thanks

Sadly, not as deeply as they could have gone. Should have almost been a mini-series or had a few less characters.

Hello Lucas.
As per comment below, I thought, hang on! Why would Johnny be reviewing "The Last Samurai". :)
Very handsome cats you have, Scottish folds?
“ I sure miss those Hawaiian gals.”
Ya Johnny you weren’t lying about the American acting.

I often worry about some Japanese war films.
The banzai attack was launched on the 105th Regiment, 27 Infantry division
Lee Marvin fought at Saipan in 1944. 4th US Marine division.

You got it! Everyone where I live just thinks they are frost bitten lol but they are suppose to look like that I guess.
