Here's an anecdote of my meeting with Anish,
Background: It was for Tata Steel chess India 2019, after mid-night he arrives at Delhi Airport in a KLM flight (I was an immigration officer there back then). He was probably within world top 5 back then. Normally when famous people fly, the concerned airlines extend courtesy and allot some staff to follow the person all through the immigration, customs and baggage processes etc. As we all know chess is not a famous game like cricket/football/Tennis, no one really knew who he was at the airport.
Actual meeting: That huge KLM flight just arrived and it was a busy hour. All the passengers of the flight are getting into those immigration queues which were already crowded.
Now I was giving clearances half-slept at probably 2-3am, but I had this knack of looking at crowd and immediately identify something odd. I found a boy with red shirt wearing a backpack, confused, but he looked familiar. Immediately I thought it was Anish but I was not sure (because he was not accompanied by anyone and was all on his own). I sent someone to get him directly to me jumping the queue (I'm not sure he realized he was extended that courtesy).
Me: Passport Please (excited to find if it's him).
(With very tired face he extends his passport, It was indeed Anish Giri !, I felt good and bad at the same time, bad because he wasn't recognised by anyone else)
    Me: I Know you sir.
Giri : Yeah ?! (smiled, like he does it all the time)
Me: How are you sir, how was your flight
Giri: (he said something about flight I don't remember)
(I did not find any history of his visits to India)
Me: When was the last time you visited India.
Giri: This is my first time (Honestly, back then I thought he was of Indian origin and was very surprised to learn that its his first visit. Then he touched upon his Nepalese descent and all)
Me: What's the purpose of your visit, any tournament ? (I didn't know that the tournament was round the corner)
Giri: (Smiley face) Don't you know, Tata Steel tournament is a big thing, even Magnus is coming, now I will be travelling to kolkata for the tournament. (I am a bit embarrassed when he said that).
(We probably spoke about something else)
Me: Okay all the best Anish (hand over the passport after making the stamps)!
Giri: Thank you so much ! (He left)
From what I understood in that short interaction is that, he is such a simple and courteous person no one could dislike. So happy he won this tournament ! The only regret is that I did not get to take a picture with him back then (we are not allowed to carry mobiles on duty).
Few months later I had a similar experience with Boris Gelfand and few months before this I met a contingent of Iranian Grandmasters. That's the summary of my meeting with GMs which i will cherish very fondly.🤩🤩 Thanks for reading.

    : Lessons by Anish :
11:15 One is never fully prepared.
15:21 Why One should stay grounded.
53:35 From "I blundered" to "Why is he not resigning? "
01:07:30 Learning How to play, not What to play from UA-camrs.
01:39:30 One must not indulge in winning.
02:07:45 How One should do chess interviews.
Congrats AG & Thanks Sagar for this informative interview.
