I never understood why they swing lightsabers like that. Theyre weightless... you dont need momentum. Just poke and thats it. As much as people make fun at it, The very first lightsaber fight between darth vader and Obi-Wan in the first movie is actually how they all should look
the main reason is cos it looks cool and there needs to be a certain amount of panache in a fight for it to be theatrical enough for most audiences The other lore reason is that Lucas had the lightsabers as the polar opposite of weightless They were in fact supposed to be very heavy or at least unwieldy to the point that only people trained in the force would be able to actually control the weapon Lucas had this like einsteinian idea that if the saber is using so much energy it should also act as if it has the mass to back it up in order to give it thematic weight. He's also said in interviews that he wanted there to be a notable increase in skill where as luke gets better at wielding the force, he's able to use the lightsaber better, as if it was lighter
