    I get what you're saying about The Rugrats Movie being underrated compared to the Rugrats In Paris. The Rugrats Movie feels like The Rugrats MOVIE. I don't know how to describe it, but it feels like a really big episode of the show, whereas Paris feels like it's own separate movie that kind of bridges the gap from "old" Rugrats to "new" Rugrats with the addition of Kimi and her mom. I hope that kinda makes sense. I love both of them, I was the biggest Rugrats fan as a kid, but something about that first movie was just so special.

    Funniest thing about The Powerpuff Girls movie failing: reportedly, they were gonna make a live-action Johnny Bravo with The Rock in the lead and it got cancelled due to PPG bombing.
    Then again, it wasn't the movie's fault. That Memorial Day weekend was PACKED. They couldn't even beat Minority Report that week. No chance in hell they were gonna win.
    Plus Disney beat both CN and Nick with Lilo and Stitch, so they were already boned to begin with.

    46:47 - This is entirely my head-canon, but I like to think the Professor was projecting how he feels about himself on the girls. He's this insanely smart scientist we rarely see having any meaningful interactions with people besides his daughters. In the show he falls really easily for a super-villain doing an act, and adding that to the creating his own children in a lab thing gets us a guy who is desperately lonely. Maybe his bad advice is how he handled "being different" as a kid and never learned how unhealthy it was.
    I think he's probably a Reed Richards / Doctor Doom type "isolated genius" who has a hard time fitting in with others because of how his mind makes them feel about him (or how he thinks it makes them feel). Unlike Reed, he doesn't have a jock buddy to invite him to all the college parties or a socialite wife pushing him outside his comfort zone for his own good.

    • @RisingJay
      @RisingJay 2 місяці тому +4

      @@NegaHumanX that’s a really interesting read on his character! I could see all that definitely being the case, though I wonder what made him go with Jojo as a lab assistant since he’s like the….*closest* to Reed’s pushes prior to the girls in his life lol

      @NegaHumanX 2 місяці тому +3

      @@RisingJay Thanks for the compliment.
      Since Jojo isn't human the Professor might have seen him as more of a pet than a friend and he wouldn't feel the need to navigate the same social hierarchy issues with him (like autistic people sometimes do with pets. I'm on the spectrum myself and it is MUCH easier to be comfortable around dogs and cats than people, especially when I need to focus on something I'm passionate about). That might also explain why he never has any other assistants (as far as I remember). That would also explain why he forgot about their history so easily. Jojo was a plug for a void that the girls ultimately filled.

It's just cool as shit to me seeing how much passion and nostalgia people younger than me have for the stuff they grew up with too. I've got a couple of younger siblings who would very much relate to all this stuff better but they're all far more mature than me so I've got to take up the mantle. TTG to the Movies giving the Titans' voice actors top billing before the celebrities in the credits is such a small thing, but it's stuck with me for years. Those 5 had been with those characters for over a decade when the film came out, and for many people are THE voices associated with the TT. Like yeah it's the bare minimum but it still seems like it'd be the coolest feeling to experience in one's career (especially when considering how little respect voice actors get). The final product wouldn't be nearly as funny without their performances and idk I'm just happy for them :)

    I remember how much of an event "The Rugrats Movie" was. And I do think it lived up to it, taking the babies on this grand adventure with major stakes. You can tell how much the Rugrats team wanted to make something worthy of the big screen.
    It will always confuse me that "Teacher's Pet" got a theatrical movie. I was one of those people who did watch and enjoy the show when it first aired, but once the movie rolled around, I hadn't thought about the show in a while. Also while I know it won a few Emmys, I don't think it was popular enough for a big-screen movie. And it's honestly so short, it could have been a television special.
    I remember when the Teen Titans Go Movie was released and critics gave it good reviews, so many online types thinking it was some kind of conspiracy or that "the critics were paid to like it." Or maybe, hear me out, movie critics aren't paying attention to what Animation Twitter is complaining about, didn't walk into the movie with some kind of bias at being upset Cartoon Network airs it so much and judged the film on its own terms. And with the movie being a satirical take on superhero movies released at a time when the genre was massively popular, it makes sense critics would find some enjoyment out of it and the Hollywood in-jokes.

This was one of my favourite shows growing up because there was just something weirdly appealing and relatable about a character who desperately wanted to be just a regular boy despite everything ranging from biology to societal perceptions of who and what Spot/Scott should be. And there was just something so heartbreaking to me about the movie when he finally became human, but not in a way that he wanted, and even more heartbroken when he was turned back into a dog instead of trying to make it work and still living the happy, human life that he always wanted, even if he had to be a grown man instead while doing so. At least he has something even close to what he was yearning for.

    The Powerpuff Girls Movie & VeggieTales had the same issue of releasing in a way that guaranteed no one was catching either in '02, and it's just WILD to me 😂
    The former was also a few weeks ahead of Spy Kids 2 so that summer in general was just not optimal. According to Craig or someone on the staff there was supposedly a regime change at CN that might've affected the marketing, which is real sad bc the film _deserved_ to do well! In a lot of ways I see as the quintessential show-to-movie leap alongside Spongebob 1 and it just isn't discussed in that way. Mad respect for this vid 👏

    What amazes me is when I watched Rugrats as a kid, I understood the concept of Stu and Lou being upset and arguing all the time, but as an adult and actually understanding the dialog, made this a brand new movie to watch. Stu was a trip, and Dee rode for Stu. He had a lot of love and took care of his dream over responsibilities of his financial insecurities but still kept his family in mind. Lou was sick of his shit on a daily lol, probably always giving him money to get by, along with money to keep Angelica, then Stu goes and has ANOTHER baby to add to the stress. But Lou was the villain 😂

    - The scene with Stu telling Tommy about responsibility always hit close to home for me cause, similar to Tommy, I'm the oldest of 2 and my mom was the baby sister. When the youngest sibling has their first kid, the perspective they bring is that of someone that knows what it's like to be the baby and wants their firstborn to be the kind of good older sibling they would've wanted, and that's a really interesting dynamic.
    - Fully agree on how people perceive the first Rugrats movie compared to the second. If we're being fair, this movie does just as much for Tommy as a character that Rugrats in Paris does for Chuckie, and the first movie just has a distinct look and tone that makes it a wholly unique experience. The team's inexperience with the software resulted in a very interesting looking movie and while it's cool to see them refine it for Rugrats in Paris, it's just as cool to see where it started. As someone that loves Rugrats in Paris, The Rugrats Movie deserves just as many flowers, arguably more if we consider the groundwork it laid. The opening title sequence ALONE is chill-inducing.
    - 22:35 Tariq knows what's up. Finally someone that gets it. Hit me up if you need someone for that ghostwriter position lmao.
    - Ngl, I wore tf outta my DVD rewatching that tag sequence in the PPG movie.
    - Damn, boys weren't being allowed to see this movie in theaters? I saw this shit and Like Mike in the same day.
    This whole saga about cartoon movies has been great. Can totally see The Chipmunk Adventure being in this movie if you hadn't done a video on it already (and honestly it wouldn't deserved it's own video. Fuck it, imma go rewatch that vid now.)

    2004 was one of my most memorable childhood years. Next to Shrek 2, the SpongeBob movie was my favorite and the most impactful. (Of course the Incredibles would take over when I grew up.) I will forever remember the look of horror on my parents' faces when they realized that there was a SpongeBob movie that they knew I'd beg them to take me to. And I'm glad they did. The Rugratz movie is a lesson in writing Stakes. It's also, relatively close to earth. There are not world domination and spies. Most of the stakes are emotional, and knowing they won't have a wolf eating the babies, that's reaaally important. Not a lot of cartoons feel like they can rely only in interpersonal drama to carry a movie.

    Teacher's Pet was one of the MANY shows I knew about but never watched as a kid for 2 reasons: 1, I thought the character designs were ugly as hell (which was one of the reasons I didnt watch a lot of specific cartoons growing up, all said cartoons I wouldnt get into until damn near the end of their lives on tv) and 2nd is because it was on Toon Disney, which i did not have growing up. A couple years ago I decided to watch the entire series, and man oh man, I loved it.
    Hell, not having Toon Disney is the reason why for the longest time, I thought Pepper Ann was a boy. As a wee lad, I loved Pepperoni but my sister and mother didnt, so I thought only boys liked it, and due to Pepper Ann's name and hair color, I thought she was named after Pepperoni, so because of thinking she was named after it, and thinking only boys liked it, I thought she was a boy. For a while I tried to remember how I never saw her skirt, and I recently remembered: I thought it was a sweater or something around her waist. Cuz again, I never watched it, but I saw ads and stuff about it
