Our friend Julia told me that once when she and Tom were playing at this location (Sutter Creek Ice Cream Emporium in Sutter Creek, California), a couple was sitting there listening, then the man got up and dropped a $100 bill into the cup. His laughter tells you how much he enjoys the tunes. I gave them to him because they're ragtime music and I thought putting them into the hands of a ragtime pianist would really make them come alive. Tom Brier is amazing, and I love his renditions, but the original Game Boy and NES sounds hit different, especially for those of us who originally experienced them when they were new. I still like listening to the originals too. I think 8-bit soundtracks don't feel the same to younger people, the same way I can't experience the same feelings of certain things from before the 80s.
It really makes you wonder about all of the humble experts in obscure fields and corners. People who don't seek attention, and just love what they do. The laugh Tom belts out when he finishes, like it is the best thing he has done all week, is awesome.

Not true that there is no such thing, Captain. Some people are definitely more naturally attuned to certain skills than others, which is what we call "talent".
"Talent" is a word uncultured people use. Those people are the ones that we call "ignorant". Calling someone "talented" is like a Chihuahua barking at a distance. Just because you think you know what you are talking about towards what someone else does for a hobby does not make you an immediate enthusiast of that hobby. Therefore, "talent" is a word people use when they don't understand the depth of that hobby, what it truly takes to cherish that skillset. I've drawn and written like crap at a young age, but over time, I've continued to pursue progression and I've gone a very long way. People tell me I'm "talented". It only means they don't know what it's like to fully embrace its value like I have. Throw your ego out the window. You are not wise. You cannot analyze correctly. Stop the butthurt. You don't really know how words are used, especially when you haven't heard them enough.

Tom is a fixture (often the only performer it seems) at the Mother Lode Ragtime Society meetings in Sutter Creek, and performs regularly at a Straw Hat Pizza, I think in Rancho Cordova on Wednesdays or something. He plays at the Ragtime Corner during the Sacramento Jazz Jubilee, but certainly a festival like Sutter Creek is a good opportunity to hear him several times. Because he reads so well, there's always some obscure tune he digs out that even I've never heard before in each of his sets.

He was playing at the first ragtime festival I went to, not far from my house in the early 1990s. I noted how he was playing obscure pieces and seemed to know a lot about composers no one had heard about. I had just bought some vintage sheet music including a rag included in an advertisement for Ellington pianos, so the next day I brought it and asked if he could tell me anything about the piece or composer. He said he'd never seen that one before, set it on the piano and played it perfectly with embellishments. I'd noted that he always played with sheet music on the piano but I figured it was just like when we played in band in school; we always had the music even though we'd memorized it. Tom indicated that there's no way he could memorize all the hundreds of obscure pieces he plays; he just pulls out a few and reads them live. I was astonished.

Brierbuto
YES
@Liam Berg (STUDENT) Are you asking for an explanation of "Brierbuto"? It's a play on "Birabuto", part of the title of the tune. Tom *Brier* is the fantastic fellow enchanting this fine melody, hence BRIER-BUTO! Truly a great pun.
i have been looking for this song for years, I just would like to thank the algorithm to helping me find the song, and a beautiful person. Best wishes on his recovery
His ability to reharmonize on the fly is just enchanting.
This is incredible and brings me so much joy
I think tom should make a special album for his ragtime arrangement for retro games songs...and this song should be on the first track....

Tom Brier is my hero.
Improvisation like no other.
It's a shame he hasn't heard these songs before, he'd appreciate how awesome he is.
Even when the fabric of reality collapses this man will still speed up
I smile every time Tom takes these and makes them his own. This guy's a master.

One of the best things I have ever heard/seen. Absolutely brilliant. I should aspire to ever being able to pull anything this wonderful off. Thank you for sharing.
This guys been giving Tom sheet music over like 7 years
It’s amazing
I gave Tom music to read over the course of more than 20 years, actually.
"I don't doubt it" - John Marton
Oh my god
My goodness, he turned this simple classic into something so astounding. This is something only a man who has been playing for decades can do.

When you find the 4th SMG
I wish I had found these Videos months ago. I lived in San Diego for 4 years in Miramar and now I've moved back to Miami, FL. I probably would have made a trip up to NorCal to see him play. I'm not a pianist in any way but I love the way he plays the old game tunes and throws in his variations. Absolutely amazing.
Super Epic!
I wish you to get better soon. Thanks for the joy that you have given to us playing the piano with love.
