Little girl being told to paint the face of her favorite doll - breaks my heart. Before the episode begins, the child already has been given the message that the tone of her (and her doll's) skin was something to be ashamed of. Don't judge people by the color of their skin, but on the content on their character.

In 1992, I was 3 years old when I asked my mother why the teacher said I had "poop colored skin". Mom is white, father is mixed native, white and black american. She called the director immediately and decided to catch the teacher in the act. So, the next day, my mom dropped me in class as if nothing happened, went to get the director and spyied the teacher. She was particulary nasty that day. I remembered that another colored kid and me had it rough. We were about to cry when my mom barged in the classroom like a hurricane, swooped us up and glared at the teacher. "You're the turd", mom called her -first and best insult I remember. The kid and I were placed in another class. This was in Austria. The year after, we went to South Africa, which is a story for next time.

Being racist to a kid even if she's black is rude and makes her want to change her melanin. This teacher needs to be fired, apologize for her rudeness and head to jail!! This is where the girl's parents really come in and support her!! So unprofessional!!!

My daughter is mixed race, and her father was abusive to us. As a small child she hated her appearance because she looked so much like him. She hated her “race” because of him. We worked hard to encourage her to see the positives of her genetics and be proud of the history on her father’s side, and to not let one person colour her view of the world. She is one of the most beautiful, talented, kind, brave… and also anxious… people I have ever met. I know that the self hatred will plague her all her life, and it hurts my heart. It didn’t help that the kids at school kept telling her she was adopted because she did t look like me. I ended up telling the kids that I sometimes have blue hair so don’t judge families based on appearance, but ended up dying my hair brown to try and match more to hers.

The beginning makes me think of the doll studies, where the African American kids (at least the original study in the, I think 70’s was black kids, I can’t recall if the revamped version in the 2000’s had other minority kids or not) were asked to choose which of two dolls (one white, one black) was the pretty/ugly, smart/stupid, good/bad doll and which one was like them. Most of the children picked the white doll for all of the positive categories and the black doll for the negative ones. It’s so heartbreaking to see a child think that they have something wrong with them, and worse to see a teacher introducing and reinforcing those ideas. This is such a sad example of something that is still happening today. Very important and well done video.

Seeing everyone just stand up against that awful teacher made everything feel so much better. She doesn’t deserve to ever work with children again if she’s like this. I never experienced racism like this but let me find out my child is getting told things like this. I’d have to restrain myself from cursing her out the moment I see her.

Huh? What country is this? Teachers don’t ask black children to paint their baby dolls white. At least not when i was in school. And i grew up in the 80s and 90s. I’ve never seen any teacher behave this way toward black kids. Never heard of that before.

Historically, there was testimony by social scientists that interviewed children of color and white children in the US south for the famous case Brown versus Board of Education. The children all viewed black dolls as bad and white dolls as good, even the Black children. This is the case that struck down segregation and the socially and legal practice in the South, Separate But Equal. This video brings that bit of history to the forefront of my thoughts as I watched this episode. Thank you DramatizeMe for this homage to this great legal case that established the law of the land by the Supreme Court of the United States under Chief Justice Warren Burger. His court established the legal concept of social justice. SCOTUS today under the John G Roberts Jr court is so strict letter of the law interpretationalist and archaic, we might as well be living in the 1700s. Today there is no social justice, just the letter of the law and as the original authors of the words of the law intended it. I hope Ukraine does better than the US.
