I wish there was a packing cube set with all of the features I'm looking for - clean/dirty compartments, compression, super-thin fabric. AFAIK, the closest are the Peak Design packing cubes, but they seem beefier than what I'm looking for as well as quite expensive.
The problem with the large one is that you get very little compression. Most of the compression happens along the sides, while the middle stays more or less the same, so the larger the cube, the more "middle" you have.
I feel it's more of an organization thing; all shirts in one packing cubes, all bottoms in an other and this way you don't have to take everything out of your bag or suitcase to find what you're looking for. I used the pack it reveal for quite a while and they're so practical for this, the smaller ones have a bit more compresion but the medium stays quite big
Yup, I use them primarily organization. If I need to dig something out from my bag, I can set aside one or two packing cubes instead of digging through a mess of shirts, underwear, etc. Stuff moves around less, and it's easier to keep track of things on the go. And even regular packing cubes offer a little bit of compression, so I can usually fit more items overall.

I don’t totally understand the point of packing cubes that don’t compress. They seem way less useful to me.

I agree, compression cubes are much better. Yes, weight don't 'magically' disappear but it makes more room for newly clothes purchased.
