Imagine just chilling in your impoverished life and suddenly the sister you forgot you had from 30 years prior shows up suddenly to take you away from your misery, oh and she's the Empress of Russia! THAT is a rags to riches story that needs its own movie!
Agreed!
@@ForgottenLives you’re hot. 😝
@@trint3089 indeed...heyyy...been wondering what happened to you and 🙌🏾💥 voilà

I never knew that Catharine searched for her siblings.
I can only imagine how they must have felt when they heard that their long lost sister is now the emperes of all Russia and when they realised she's giving them the chance to live in the lap of luxury.
Catherine's love of books, learning, and self improvement is admirable. She positively changed many things for her country and its people. Great video for Women's History Month!
👍👏✌
Thanks for the support 😊
Martha was born in the territory of what is now Latvia, my homeland. So I was very pleased to see that you were covering her incredible life story. Thank you!
As other people have mentioned in the comments, her story certainly deserves more exposure - I wonder why no big budget period drama has been made out of her life story yet.
I totally agree on this fact as she was a powerhouse plus that a series of her life would be amazing. After all Princess Diana has had one of her life. I've still not seen that though.
There are 2 Russian series on Catherine the Great that feature her in early episodes. I found them on Tubi. One is one season long and the other 3 seasons long. Great costumes, homes, and actors. I am enjoying it immensely.
I enjoyed this story about Catherine the First of Russia, she was a very interesting and yet fascinating woman. She certainly accomplished alot in her life to start out as a young orphaned girl and end up ruling Russia, that's extraordinary. Great investigating, presentation and photos, too.
Thanks very much!
She was married to Peter the Great?! I never knew that! Fascinating! Thank you! And a ruler who downsized the army to improve the lives of the poor? Amazing!
@@SK-oh9ui yeah she was. she was Peter the Great's second wife after he locked up Eudoxia
@@andypham1636 I feel sorry for Peter's first wife.
I always admired catherine I, she was a kind and fair ruler this is the first video I've seen based on the empress. Great video by the way ❤❤❤
I was always getting the 2 Catherines mixed up. Thanks for clarifying which one did what. I'll feel a little more confident when discussing this part of Russian history. By the way, I really appreciate the details you put into each episode. You really do your research and it shows. Very well done.
In Lithuania, a writer Kristina Sabaliauskaite wrote a book about her (called Peter's empress). A really remarkable life.
Kristina Sabaliauskaite is a very interesting writer. I've read some of her _Silva Rerum_ series (in Polish translation). I hope that more of her works will get translated, also to English, and she'll get more international recognition.
I love how you're always finding such interesting people to tell us about.
What a life she led. Great video as always.
Thank you!
I also had her confused with Catherine the Great but that was just because of the thumbnail. I've never read much about this Catherine, and it was interesting to say the least. What a ascent this lady had!!
I hate Catherine the great, Peter the great, and Elizabeth of Russia.
@@SavageDarksider-sw7rp How very savage of you. So, who do you love then?
@@matthewboman1040 Honestly, I think Ivan the fifth line should have continue.
Once again you delivered 🙌
Thanks for watching 😁
You're a great story teller. I always feel that my curiosity is in direct conversation with you. I've heard you present many different lives and although the subject vary you intrigued in the same way by providing content and making it relevant by emphasizing the personal struggles that define our individual and collective humanity. Good job and thank you!
If you ever are looking for a side job, may I suggest audio books. Your voice is awesome!
There’s a interesting story of her husband Czar Peter on his tour throughout Europe sitting in a chair in the bedroom of Louis XIV second wife when she woke up and she asked why he was there and his response was like perfect for history it was “Madame I came to admire the best of France .” A true statement for posterity
That is really creepy thing for peter to do and he was a giant. I'm not sure what I'd do if I saw a nearly 7 foot tall pale russian monarch watching me sleep.
@@lindsey7951 I know right! Be a little unsettling to say the least at least he knew how to pay a sincere compliment to a lady.
I'm happy to catch your new stories. You and “ Brief Case” helped me and many others during the pandemic!! Great stories as usual!!
Yes, both channels are top tier for me as well.
Glad to hear it, thanks very much!
Thank you!
Very interesting story. I only knew of Catherine the Great. I've only ever heard of the famous male ones. (Don't know much about Russian history). It's cool that Catherine 1 started the trend of female rulers. You always find such fascinating forgotten lives!
Thanks for watching 😁
It's true Hollywood needs to take their attentions away from Catherine the great ( i appreciates her changes in russia) She is now well known amd there is many movies talks about her from the 1930s to current age plus they don't covered 3 other female empress Such as Anna i, and Elizabeth i catherine i daughter.
This is amazing channel it always has great content and the narrating is very enjoyable
Thank you 💕😊
My pleasure!!
Greetings Miss Caddy 🙏🏻❤️🍀🕊️⚖️🌅🎶
This was quite interesting and informative. I’ll admit I knew next to nothing about her . She was one gutsy young lady. Lots of admiration for a true Tsarina of Russia .
Thanks for watching!!
You really did well in this one. I'm always confused with all the Catherines and Peters. Thanks!
What a incredibly strong woman!! Sent in to spy and never left. Extremely interesting woman who had the capacity to scale back the army to aid the high taxes of Russia therefore creating good living standards was excellent and I loved the fact that she came from being a orphan to become... Wonderful. I subscribe to another of your channels as you're very informative of your research. Thank you.
Really enjoyed this. You've included some beautiful artwork. Thank you!
What an epic time for the boiari... we are back

Boris Sheremetev's son Peter Borisovich lost his daughter to smallpox so he was one of the most known fighters against the sickness
This was a great video! I love how easily you present your subjects. I always learn something and really enjoy hearing you.
I love this channel where the forgotten past is recreated and vividly comes to life. An excellent narrator. Keep up the good work

Another excellent video to watch before I go to bed. 😁 Forgotten Lives, thank you the pleasure of your content. 🥰
Incredible story. But it was Peter the great who transformed Russia into a great power and had Catherine crowned empress of Russia. Also it was Alexander Menshikov, Peters close friend, who was critical in supporting Catherine assuming power as to maintain his own position after Peter the greats death.
Really good commentary. Well researched, too. Thanks very much.
Great story again! Thanks!

I haven't heard about her. This was so interesting! Keep going!
Perhaps Russia could place another servant girl in power for effective government today.
there’s a really entertaining audio book historical fiction about her life called tsarina it’s pretty good despite a few inaccuracies
Always a pleasure to watch your well researched and interesting films

Very interesting Thank you so much ⚘
Oh ok, so Catherine I is not the same person as Catherine the Great... I've learned something!
Thank you. Very few videos, etc. made about this remarkable woman.
Oh my gosh, I was actually reading a little bit about Catherine I today! I didn't know it was fates way of saying that a video about her would come out later the same day! xD
Phenomenal!
Enjoyed video
Catherine must have had an amazingly powerful drive within her to make it to the top. I wonder when and why that urge developed so strong in her.
Such a good vid
Well Told Story Young Man 🙂🙂🙂🙂🙂🙂🙂
Thanks for this video.
This showed that women can rule well and made changes so that people will have better lives.
That painting ar 2:57 is incredible
Another great biopic ❤️
Thanks!
@@ForgottenLives your very welcome
Catherine I is one of my favorite Russian rulers. She didn't rule for long but her life was a true adventure!
Interesting & to bury 10 children... horrific to endure that 👑 *TY *Forgotten Lives*
I dnt know why they changed succession rules Catherine did alot of good things for the country . Any of the Romanov girls would've been just as good instead of making sickly Alexi heir to the throne
Tsar Paul, son of Catherine the Great, had very problematic relationship with his mother, changed the rules of succession, for males only.
May I suggest a subject for you? Look up the story of Elizabeth Packard. There is much to say about her so I won't even start.
Her story is very similar to hürrem sultan
Peter II has a sly look in that portrait 🤔😜
Thank you again for a remarkable story. Really appreciate your work. 👍
I'm curious as to where all the Russian royals are buried? Does Russia have them all in one place? Also, Catherine's children who passed.
Oh how wonderful! Catherine of Russia. Yummy... I loved this narration.
Thank you so much. I just love your huge jug of spaghetti and the huge wine urn.
I’m absolutely obsessed with Russian history - especially the Russian empire period. That said, considering she wasn’t Russian or even noble, it’s surprising she was able to keep power after Peter the Great died. There must have been much back room dealing going on since Russia had never had a Empress regnant. She had already been crowned once thru the Russian Orthodox Church bc she was Peter’s wife but no other Tsarina tried to hold onto power after their husband died. Supposedly Paul I’s widow was gonna press her claim after he was assassinated but was talked out of it by Alexander.
❤
hey could you do Empress Anna Ivanovna? she's known as the cruelest Empress in Russian history.
Catherine is so adorable sdfgdgfg
What is the name of the painting at 6:11 , does anyone know?
I knew about her through this series, Russia: Land of the Tsars!
A Polish girl Marta Skowronska became Empress of Russia.
Irina Godonova, widow of Czar Feodor, was the 🥇 woman to be ruler of Russia in her own right. She ruled for several days before abdicating the throne and becoming a nun.
I recently found out that I'm Russian and related to Marta Helena skowronska
Please tell
Very relevant to these times the current president cant take all the credit for their beautiful country
Boyes Lyons would be an interesting story thanks
I would love for you to do a series on the different gypsies in this region and where they settled in the America's. It is fascinating how interconnected it is but unfortunately due to persecution not much is known of them in America because they kept to themselves and did not mention their past to Outsiders.
Peter the great led Russia out of the dark ages. He was the hero of Katherine the great.
Wtf are you even saying
Around minx lol
Good wishes
So Intriguing and very apt for what is happening with Russia and Ukraine right now... Many thanks for producing history that the majority wouldn't know about...
I wonder what she’d make of what Russia is doing today! #supportUkraine xx
I never realized how slow-moving these videos are until I watched with the sound off and CC... VERY slow, lots of repeated pictures and paintings and images... The info in this video could have been compressed into a more efficient narrative... I also never realized what a silly expression he wears while on camera; he looks as if he's standing on my front doorstep, apologizing for breaking my window with his baseball. 🤣
I still enjoyed the video, it's good, don't get me wrong, but it's a lot different with no audio.
I find this video not “slow” but rather normal. His speaking manner is very calm and relaxing. Everyone on UA-cam nowadays speaks so fast as though they are chased by pack of hounds 🤦🏻♀️
@@raya7256Yes, I agree; many YT narrators are WAY too "hyper", but it's not the speed/lack of clarity of his speech that irritates me, it's his tone/accent/cadence, so that's why I tried watching it with the sound off, and that's when I found it to be "slow"... He's perfectly understandable, he is not ugly or stupid, but he tends towards the "ASMR"(?) side of things, imo. No hatred, for sure. ✌️
Hey Paisiano, send me a link to your site. Id like to critique them.
Catherine the Great let my husband's German Catholic ancestors immigrate to Russia to escape persecution to live normal lives.
Appealingly historcal life women.
"Gluck" should be pronounced something like "Glook" -the same as the great Austrian composer Christoph Willibald Gluck.
A Peasant side chick who became the main chick and changed her name to assimilate. Sounds like milania trump
This entry written on 5/1/'23. I wish a Russian woman would figure out a way to take over the leadership of russia now; it might turn out to be better than the leadership currently entrenched.
If It Weren't For The MEN Backing Them, They NEVER Would've Ruled...True!?
Who else would have been around them?
@@scallopohare9431 Certaintly Not Women, The Weaker Sex.
@@rebeccalee1065 You don't seem to grasp the point. You can disparage her all you want, I feel sorry for you.
@@scallopohare9431 I'm Not Disparaging Her. I'm Only Stating A FACT That You Seem To Have A Problem With. If You Can't Handle The Truth, It's Not My Problem.
Suggestion: your mention of the bubonic plague, gave me the idea.
In Vienna 16/17th century, I’m not sure which, during on of the many outbreaks of plague,
there lived a beggar, bagpipe-player and drunkard named Augustin.
One day, at closing time, he was so drunk, that they threw him out on the street. - a thing one did with all the plague victims - and during the night the undertakers cart came by, loaded up Augustin and dumped him with all the other bodies in an open grave.
This Pit was so deep, that when he woke in the morning hours, he could not escape.
So he composed a tune, which he kept on singing, till the undertakers found him and got him out.
From this derives the folk song: “Oh du Lieber Augustin, alle ist hin.” Oh dear Augustin, everything is lost.
I wonder if the story would be interesting enough. Its just the bear bones here.
Greetings and thank you for your work.
