It does and I agree completely with the scent of the alyssum. At the time when the David Austin roses were blooming, I found the fragrance a little overwhelming….but now that the roses are not here, the scent of the alyssum is just very sweet and nice. Thanks 🙏 Margie!

It is always painful cutting back favorites. When I grew Alyssum, my heart would just break, but they always come back better than ever. Also, thanks for sharing info on Hydrangea propagation and creating standards! 🌱🌱🌱

When the 1st lockdown was announced last year, local celebrities began flaunting big-leafed plants & boasted of how exhorbitant the prices they bought them for and thus sparked heightened desire for those who can afford to buy them as well. Oppotunistic people resorted to stealing plants they can sell.
Hi Tracy, so glad to walk your garden with you. You have such a special touch to put the perfect color combo together. BTW, I created my first standard by fate as one of my newly purchased bobo was not doing well and dying. I had to cut all the new growth and flowers to save the plant. So I thought why not just saved one stem to create a tree. That was what I did. I look forward to seeing my first Bobo standard come to live next year. Happy Gardening!
Proven Winners Double Up White Begonias or white SunPatients might be a great alternative to the Alyssum in that you would not have to cut them back midseason foregoing that bit of bloom time. Your hydrangeas are so beautiful.
Thank you so much for your suggestions! 🤩 I have seen those PW plants on IG and they are beautiful plants. I wish they sell them in bulk otherwise it would cost me $4+ per 1 qt can of PW plant….PW plants are quite expensive in our area. I planted the entire front border with alyssum & 3 containers in the back - cost me only $5+ in seeds. My goal is to make the garden look “good” for the cheapest price possible. 💚🙏🪴
@@TracysHomeGarden I agree! PW in the Vancouver area is $4.49 for a tiny pot. That adds up really fast! I snatch them up if I can find them in clearance but very expensive otherwise to kit out entire garden otherwise.

Tracy, you are such an inspiration for me as a fellow GTA gardener! I’ve designed and planted 5 new gardens over last year and this. They are almost complete and looking great; I’m so proud :-) 🌱 I was sent limelights instead of little hotties in a recent online order and didn’t have the time to get new ones so I’m going to have to tree-form one of them to ensure it continues to fit the space it’s in as it grows (shorter perennials below it). So, this was great timing for me as I already had “re-watch Tracy’s tree-forming videos” on my to-do list 🙌🏻 BTW I want to create a hydrangea hedge in my parents yard and found a good deal on bobos- was going for little limes or limelight primes or possibly even incrediball but I can’t pass up this bobo deal. I assume they’ll make an equally nice hedge. Any thoughts?
Oh...I think any hydrangea planted en mass will be stunning...the only thing I would be more "choosy" is the "feel" I want to create and the proportions of the space. Incrediball calls for large open semi-shady large space that allows the blooms to drape and flop...very cottagey kind of a feeling which is very soothing on the eyes for me. Limelight Prime hedge would make a beautiful taller hedge at mid-summer with a more upright feel -- I think it would be great in a more sunny open area. Bobo on the other hand will be a shorter hedge with puffy white blooms that will look beautiful in early summer...but the blooms may quickly fade to a dusty pink if they get too much sun. I would decide based on the amount of sun you get... 1) More than 6hours of sun - Limelight Prime 2) Partial sun - Bobo 3) Partial shade - Incrediball I'm so impressed - 5 gardens -- sounds amazing with the work that you must have done to them. Hope you give us updates on what you end up doing at your parents' garden.

I seen a tree like that in front of my near garden center called Natures Corner. They had 3 stakes holding it because omy the blooms were so huge for the trunk but it is just gorgeous!!! Your gonna need 2 stakes its gonna get realy big!!😁🌳🏵🌻🌾🌿🍁🍂🍁🍂🍁🍂🍁🍂Its August 1st!!!! Fall time!!
Those pink and purple hydrangeas are the Macrophylla type of hydrangeas: I have Blue Jangles (2-3 ft), Endless Summer varieties that get about 3-5 ft. Happy gardening!
Tracy, incredible garden. Question: of the limelight, quick fire and pinky wink tree standards from PV which one would you recommend if we could only have one as a front yard full sun highlight? Also can these take full sun and frost? My rose trees do not make it through winters, here in zone 7b.
Hi Arsalan, In zone 7, you can plant any panicle hydrangeas and they will be definitely fine. Because of your longer growing season and more intense heat, I would recommend something that blooms mid summer like Pinky Winky or late summer like Limelight and not the Quick Fire (which blooms in early summer and the blooms tend to go brown by end summer). However, Limelight is gorgeous but their panicles tend to flop so I would get the improved Lime Light Prime which supposed to bloom earlier, have stronger stems, etc…and less floppy. LL Prime is a recent introduction so the tree forms may not be available yet. But, if you have the patience, buy the bush form and train the standard yourself?! 💚😁💚 Zone 7 is borderline for grafted rose trees. In our zone 5, we usually plant these in containers and take them into the garage for the winter. Happy gardening!

I find BC daisies do need a little more water than the Russian sage but not as much water as hydrangeas. I have them planted in front of salvias…like Russian sage, salvias don’t need as much water….so I think what you’ve got will definitely work. 💚🪴🙏
I would get the longest branch from the previous season. For larger varieties like Limelight, the branches are usually 3-4 ft. All my Limelight’s are at that height when I prune them into trees. Happy gardening!
Do you have a Home Depot near by? Lowe’s and Walmart in our areas have cleared out many of their perennials. I would check local garden nurseries - they take better care of their plants so they will still be in good condition at this time. Good luck Teresa! 💚🪴💚

@@Tklittle8989 is it mid-day afternoon sun? If it is then yes you can plant it….except you may not get the same colour I fall and fewer blooms as if it were in full sun all day. Good luck 🤞
I think it will work because noon sun is most intense and panicle hydrangeas like that. But remember that it may form blooms a little later, fewer and the fall colour may not be as intense as in full 6+ hours of sun. 💚🪴💚
I simply adore your garden Tracy. Is alyssum perennial for you? I grew some from seed this year but they still haven’t taken off yet.here in the uk it’s been so wet and rainy. Also do you prefer to make your hydrangeas as standard so you have more garden space? I just bought 3 limelight’s, which I think will take up considerable space in the bed when fully grown!
Alyssum - I have always treated them as annual …but with our last winter being extremely warm…a viewer told me that their alyssum came back. So if our winters continue to be as warm as last year, we could see them come back. Just in case they don’t come back, I will collect the seeds and plant them next spring. Yes, I do love trees - the space below provides a lot more planting at the base of them. I also like them as centrepieces in planters as well. 💚🪴🙏
I have tulips (hopefully they will come back), primrose, columbines, English daisies, rock cress, and salvias. They are all spring blooming perennials. 💚🪴💚

I have a long wish list and am running out of real estate for them. But they are so beautiful and addictive. 😥 Which one is your favorite one? May please ask where you got your DA roses? I would have to say of all the roses I have, I think I prefer the Lichfield the most as the plants seem to be more compact and less thorny...al thought the Evelyn and William Morris blooms tend to look prettier and with stronger scent...but the plants don't look "nice" to me. If I had more space, I would definitely plant more roses as I like so many of them.
I have geraniums and begonia in containers but I take them indoors during the winter next to a sunny window. I take them out in late May and they do well for me.
Oh my goodness, now I want a quick fire tree. Those light pink colours are absolutely gorgeous. Do you think I can still find them in any GTA nursery at this time of year? Or should I wait till next season. I enjoy your videos immensely. TFS.
I wonder what’s the evergreen plant name of front left side of quick fire tree. The golden green cypress? Is it okay to plant in a pot for front portal entry?
No, in our zone 5/6, I typically divide hydrangeas near the end of September or sometimes I wait until in late winter just as soon as the ground thaws and the soils is workable (and I see small leaf bud developed on the stems). Dividing now you will put them into too much stress and May end up killing the plant.

I got most of my plants from Sheridan nursery & VANDERMEER nursery. I too have never ordered plants online before….so I have no experience with online orders. I also enjoy visiting nurseries in person looking at plants 🪴. I hope you’ll find them as well.

Oh…I would most definitely recommend original Fire Light or the new Quick Fire Fab! They both are early bloomers and have most gorgeous pink colour by this time. But Fire Light does have nicer fall colour than the Quick Fire Fab though….but the Quick Fire Fab may be a tad taller than 5ft….perhaps more 6 ft. Also, QF Fab - the blooms are more dense so stems may not be as upright as Fire Light. Good luck hydrangea planting! You cannot go wrong with either one. Ps. My 1st choice would be the original Fire Light though. 😊💚🪴🙏
My Fire Light is in the ground for 4 year already and it grows to only about 4 ft. Do you like my Lava Lamp? It has beautiful pink now and will be a darker reddish colour in fall. The tag says it grows to 2-3 ft tall but so far it’s about 4 ft tall and 2.5 ft wide. I don’t think it will grow any taller than that. The stems are strong and do not flop.

Bobo standards will grow to about 2-3 ft in our zone. That’s what I like for container centrepieces. Thanks 🙏 for watching Dami!

LL Prime is a recent introduction so the tree forms may not be available yet. But, if you have the patience, buy the bush form and train the standard yourself?! 💚😁💚
Zone 7 is borderline for grafted rose trees. In our zone 5, we usually plant these in containers and take them into the garage for the winter.

Beautiful garden. Clearly a labour of love. Do you find the banana cream daisies drought tolerant? I bought two for a hot, dry, full sun location that often gets neglected at watering time. Already have some denim n lace russian sage in there and hoping this would be a nice contrast. 🙏🏼 you
I find BC daisies do need a little more water than the Russian sage but not as much water as hydrangeas. I have them planted in front of salvias…like Russian sage, salvias don’t need as much water….so I think what you’ve got will definitely work. 💚🪴🙏

Great information.. How long should the trunk be before you start trimming?
I would get the longest branch from the previous season. For larger varieties like Limelight, the branches are usually 3-4 ft. All my Limelight’s are at that height when I prune them into trees. Happy gardening!
Where do you buy your Bobo’s and Banana Cream daisies and yellow/white lilies? I haven’t found any in Kentucky at Lowe’s or Walmart.
Do you have a Home Depot near by? Lowe’s and Walmart in our areas have cleared out many of their perennials. I would check local garden nurseries - they take better care of their plants so they will still be in good condition at this time. Good luck Teresa! 💚🪴💚

The stems do grow...but you can control this by pruning. :-)

@@Tklittle8989 is it mid-day afternoon sun? If it is then yes you can plant it….except you may not get the same colour I fall and fewer blooms as if it were in full sun all day. Good luck 🤞

I think it will work because noon sun is most intense and panicle hydrangeas like that. But remember that it may form blooms a little later, fewer and the fall colour may not be as intense as in full 6+ hours of sun. 💚🪴💚
I simply adore your garden Tracy. Is alyssum perennial for you? I grew some from seed this year but they still haven’t taken off yet.here in the uk it’s been so wet and rainy. Also do you prefer to make your hydrangeas as standard so you have more garden space? I just bought 3 limelight’s, which I think will take up considerable space in the bed when fully grown!
Alyssum - I have always treated them as annual …but with our last winter being extremely warm…a viewer told me that their alyssum came back. So if our winters continue to be as warm as last year, we could see them come back. Just in case they don’t come back, I will collect the seeds and plant them next spring.
Yes, I do love trees - the space below provides a lot more planting at the base of them. I also like them as centrepieces in planters as well. 💚🪴🙏

I have tulips (hopefully they will come back), primrose, columbines, English daisies, rock cress, and salvias. They are all spring blooming perennials. 💚🪴💚

I would have to say of all the roses I have, I think I prefer the Lichfield the most as the plants seem to be more compact and less thorny...al thought the Evelyn and William Morris blooms tend to look prettier and with stronger scent...but the plants don't look "nice" to me.
If I had more space, I would definitely plant more roses as I like so many of them.

I have geraniums and begonia in containers but I take them indoors during the winter next to a sunny window. I take them out in late May and they do well for me.

Do you think we can divide hydrangea now?
No, in our zone 5/6, I typically divide hydrangeas near the end of September or sometimes I wait until in late winter just as soon as the ground thaws and the soils is workable (and I see small leaf bud developed on the stems). Dividing now you will put them into too much stress and May end up killing the plant.

I got most of my plants from Sheridan nursery & VANDERMEER nursery. I too have never ordered plants online before….so I have no experience with online orders. I also enjoy visiting nurseries in person looking at plants 🪴. I hope you’ll find them as well.

Can you recommend a pink/red hydrangea for the front of my house? Say 4-5 feet tall and wide upright stems?
Oh…I would most definitely recommend original Fire Light or the new Quick Fire Fab! They both are early bloomers and have most gorgeous pink colour by this time. But Fire Light does have nicer fall colour than the Quick Fire Fab though….but the Quick Fire Fab may be a tad taller than 5ft….perhaps more 6 ft. Also, QF Fab - the blooms are more dense so stems may not be as upright as Fire Light.
Good luck hydrangea planting! You cannot go wrong with either one.
Ps. My 1st choice would be the original Fire Light though. 😊💚🪴🙏

My Fire Light is in the ground for 4 year already and it grows to only about 4 ft.
Do you like my Lava Lamp? It has beautiful pink now and will be a darker reddish colour in fall. The tag says it grows to 2-3 ft tall but so far it’s about 4 ft tall and 2.5 ft wide. I don’t think it will grow any taller than that. The stems are strong and do not flop.
