    My oven got to where it wouldn't heat up even though you could see the igniter was on. Then, if the oven has been "on" for about 15-20 minutes, if you ignite a burner on the range top, you hear the oven gas igniting... weird, huh? It was just a hassle, but NOW, it's progressed to the point where it'll turn itself back off, even though the oven and preheat light stay on like it thinks it's still on. Your video gave me some insight into where to begin... thank you! I'll probably call a repairman, but don't like to go in TOTALLY clueless! LOL

      @@lisalee2885 Sorry this is happening to so many people. There was another video or two ( one from “Scott the fix-it guy” showing how to take the panel out through the back and using an eraser on the connections. Super easy! I know less than zero about electronics and I did it. I am really blessed that the eraser thing actually fixed mine but then I had to buy a new refrigerator and the guy that came out to hook up the new refrigerator (I told him about the oven) told me that the eraser probably doesn’t have anything to do with it it’s just taking the panel out and plugging it back in. So, I would just go through there first part of the fix to see if that worked before I use an eraser on something that doesn’t look like it needs it. There was nothing I’m not connector things whatever they’re called, so I’m figuring the refrigerator repair man is probably right about the stove. Good luck I really hope it works for you.

    I have an old 1960s Welbilt oven where the burners will light but, the oven no longer heats.
    Although I figured it was the igniter, I’m going to leave this thing alone. I’m even afraid to call anyone as so many people don’t know what they’re doing. I remember when PSEG (gas company) blew up an apartment complex. I bought a toaster oven instead as, every time I think about the oven, the word KABOOM comes to mind!

    • @AlvinShepherd

      With an oven that old it probably doesn't have electronic ignition. It could be something as simple as the oven pilot has gone out. If the top burners use a pilot then the oven will also. Sometimes debris can cause the pilot orifice to get clogged and can require cleaning. Don't get rid of those old pilot ovens so much more reliable.

    • @privateprivate8366
      @privateprivate8366 5 років тому

      Duly noted.
      I did remove the inner base to get at that pilot light at one point. I tried to light it, while flinching, with one of those long matches. Still, nothing. I just remember trying to bake cookies one Christmas and, all of a sudden, it was no longer baking. I may look back there again to check for debris.
      I’ll say that I did make the mistake of leaving a Le Creuset cast iron pan in the boiler for a bit, which ruined the pan. I don’t recall whether it was one of their pans with a non-stick or enameled surface. But, the instructions said not to do that and I’d just forgotten it was in there as, I never use the broiler. I wonder if any of the coating from that pan redeposited on surfaces in the oven, including that pilot light.
      If I had ever got that working again, the next thing I’d like to be able to do, but know is not possible - is to change that God awful avocado green color!🤢😆

    I replaced my igniter before. I can’t remember. Is it supposed to sound like a low boom as it heats during baking? I didn’t think nothing of it until I went to preheat it to cook something, opened the door and there was about a 6” thin flame coming out from underside on left front. Forget that. I turned everything off. Cooked in the air fryer.

      Ovens are pretty simple until electronic controls are involved. If you are talking about a thermostat on your oven it's easy but the same thing controlled by electronic can be hard to be clear. The thermostat sends the power to the ignitor in series with the gas valve.

      There should be a wiring schematic for your oven they are usually located behind the oven in an envelope that is attached to the oven check to see what gives the gas valve power at the control module if it's electronic and see if that connection is losing power if it is there could be a problem in the electronic circuitry

      Yes it is weird, but that's how every gas oven I've ever worked on does it. It's actually a safety because if the igniter goes bad the gas valve will not get power. It does seem like they would last allot longer if they did it a little different though.

      My oven shows Raytheon on the outside but inside the door area the label shows Modern Maid PHO 103-UD. I can't find parts for this oven. The pipe the flame comes
      from (burner ?) looks corroded right in the area where the igniter is located. I was able to clean it up a bit. I can't tell if the size of the holes right in that area
      are larger due to the corrosion. I need to move the ingiter out of the way to do a better cleaning. At the moment its not starting with a pop or bang with a big flame and I don't smell any gas. If I see the holes are damaged I would consider replacing it if I could find the replacement. This unit is just a straight pipe that measures 11 7/8 inches long from
      front to back not including the area that goes inside where the gas is.

Any pointers I cant afford a repair man so Im stuck diy.. 😔

    • @AlvinShepherd
      @AlvinShepherd  4 роки тому

      It's possible that the knob is turning while the oven temperature control shaft does not. If you are sure that the control shaft is in the off position you most likely have a bad oven temperature control. You could disconnect the wiring from the gas control valve located on the back of the oven. This would prevent the oven from working. Be sure to unplug the oven while removing any wiring from the controls or the valve and tape up the connectors with electrical tape to prevent a short. Hope this helps.

    • @AlvinShepherd
      @AlvinShepherd  3 роки тому

      The oven ignitor stays on whenever the oven is operating. If the oven ignitor continues to receive power the gas valve must be receiving power as well. This circuit is wired in series. So the oven temperature control would be bad.

    • @AlvinShepherd
      @AlvinShepherd  3 роки тому

      If you are referring to the surface spark igniter then the problem is in one of the switches located on the surface control valves with the power off you can ohm these out to see which is closed in the off position. Look up parts using your model number. If you are referring to the oven 99.9 percent of all ovens use a hot surface igniter which is ran in series with the gas valve. The igniter continues to be on anytime the oven temperature is calling for the gas valve to be on.

    • @AlvinShepherd
      @AlvinShepherd  6 років тому +1

      If your oven uses a hot surface igniter to ignite the oven burner then it will not work because the gas valve gets its power through the igniter. The valve circuit is wired in series with the igniter.

    • @AlvinShepherd

      The gas valve is On or Off and controlled by a thermostat so unless something has rusted away on the burner to allow the gas to flow to one area I would say OK. But a good inspection of the burner for rust holes certainly would be a good idea.

When I start the oven the ignitor glows just fine and does ignite the gas but what I am seeing is an inconsistent flame that "dances" along the entire length of the burner bar. I would inspect the burner first to make sure the holes are not plugged up with rust. And clean the burner with a steel brush. There is also an orifice that sits right under the burner when removed check it as well. You will need a gas manometer to check gas pressure but check the burner and orifice first.

      Kimberly if your stove top burners have a flame it is a gas oven. There are electric ranges which only use electricity and there are some rare models which use a combination of both. Old stoves that had pilots only used gas and did not require any electricity. But they would emit gas fumes if placed into a small kitchen over time and had several pilots that burned continuously so they have been phased out.
