Shikukus brother who resided in nakuru was called Dr. Lwali oyondi the other brother had died many years back in a griesly accident at the butere bridge of the efiratsi river just 150 mtrs from the famous butere girls. For your information shikukus first wife was a sister to the then butere diocess of Ack-church.

Actually, the MP who replaced Martin Shikuku upon his detention in 1975 was Richard Litunya. On the death of Jomo Kenyatta in 1978, Martin Shikuku regained the Butere seat in 1979.He held that seat for two terms again until 1988 when he was rigged out and Jesse Opembe served for 1 year to 1989 and he died suddenly to be replaced by J.A.O. Okwara who held the seat upto 1992 when Martin Shikuku re-elected again to 1997.

Not only shikuku, but largely luhyia nation had very notable politicians who seemed very straight such that if one has ended up as president probably Kenya would be better today, like Kijana, Nabwera, Muliro, and am saying this as a person from GEMA nation, so no tribal preferences.

Chief Richard Litunya was the mp elected in Butere 1975, during the bye election. Opembe got in in 1988, during mlolongo.
VP Daniel arap Moi asked Shikuku to substantiate on how kanu had been killed....

Thanks for the history on what happened years back. I have had a lingering question for some time now. Was the late Mwai Kibaki used to split the opposition vote in the 1992 elections by forming DP?

Thank you for the insightful information. Maybe a correction: Shikuku participated in the 1988 elections (since this was way long after being released from detention in 1978) and lost to Jesse Opembe. Opembe was subsequently appointed Assistant Minister for National Planning and Development but passed away six months later. A by-election was held, and J. Okwara succeeded Opembe as the Butere MP. Shikuku recaptured the seat in the 1992 elections under Ford Asili.
