What I love about this movie is its sense of scale. The creatures, characters, and objects are obviously very small, but the perspective and sound design make them appear to be more similar to us in terms of size.
In 9's defense, he had no idea that it would have taken 2's life or awaken the Fabrication Machine, and it was natural curiosity that made him do it. If all of you were in the same situation, 9 out of 10 of you would do the same thing 9 did.
Thing is, we observe the beast try to place the amulet into the device. I’m pretty sure we shouldn’t try to accomplish what a murderous robot is trying to achieve.
And to think. They had just defeated the last robot. They had just killed the remaining threat to the stitchpunks. They could've lived in peace now, 1 wouldn't be so strict or scared anymore. But 9 had to go and mess with the artifact...
No one is sad that (SPOILER) 8 dies... It's always like." Oh boo hoo, the kind guy dies!" or "The creepy one dies!" but you never hear, "On no the big strong guy who *AHEM* risked his life SEVERAL times to save the bunch, dies!"
I love how this stuff is framed, like how the beast looks massive when it is up against only 5, 9, and 2, but when 7 comes around, it is framed as much smaller.

I like 9 too ^^ I dun think people are giving him enough credit really.... if it weren't for 9, rain would've never been restored, and the fabrication machine would still be in tact, and it could've awakened some other way later. Also, if 9 wouldn't have gone after 2, the cat beast woulda awakened it before 7 had the chance to chop off its head. Well, what I'm really trying to say is, 9 actually SOLVED the problem and destroyed the fabrication machine by making this mistake. So he's still a(c)
It could be their feminine side, like if that person were born female. If it were a woman's soul, there could be 8 female dolls and one male to represent the feminine/masculine sides. (That, or there could be more or less from each, depending on the person.) Not every man is totally macho and not every girl is girly. This shows sort of a balance. 7 could be the more gentle side of him. (Edit: By gentle, I mean towards friends/family, in an understanding and caring way. To that cat-monkey beast, 7 might have acted more like a protective mother bird defending a nest.)

Does anybody know what the symbols above it's red eye are? They look like alchemical symbols. Perhaps it was made through the same "dark science" as the stitch punks. Though why would anybody build a robot cat to re-activate the Brain?
The stitchpunks are the pieces of the scientists soul, and in the scientists message he literally outright says that the brain machine is a copy of his mind. So by absorbing all the stitchpunks the brain would literally become the scientist’s consciousness. He probably planned to find a way to repopulate the earth after recovering all the lost pieces of his soul. The cat beast was probably made by the brain to retrieve the soul sucking device and at least one stitchpunk since the brain needed at least one ‘soul-piece’ of at least one stitchpunk in order to be revived.
Some of the others risked their lives too =o I was sad when 8 died, but not too much, as he was kinda a jerk to the others. Plus, his death was kinda fast. It wasn't drawn out too much, and the reason he died was kinda his own fault.... Not saying that 8 was an awfull character or something though, as he was very loyal to 1, and it's a good quality to be loyal etc. but I'm just giving a few reasons why someone may not be sad when 8 died.

The scientist that created the stitched doll characters was the same one who created the AI of "The Machine" but the fascist head of state took the AI sphere (basically the part containing its eye) and forced it to manufacture an army of the bipedal robots (which are shown in many scenes of the film) . At one point or another, however, it turned against humanity. Once it went rogue, someone (possibly the scientist?) shut it down so that it would no longer create any more machines. It likely created the Cat Beast right before it was turned off completely, so it could find the talisman that eventually awoke it again. The talisman was the only thing that could turn it back on because it was needed to siphon living souls as energy (at least I believe that's the reason it continued to drain their souls throughout the movie).
To be fair, he had literally no idea what is was or what inserting the talisman into the slot would do, and neither did us as an audience the first time we watched the movie. And no, 9 did NOT see the Cat Beast trying to insert the talisman either, as he turned away to try to free 2 literally right before the Cat Beast pulled out the talisman. He didn't know what the talisman was or what putting it in the slot would do, and he obviously didn't see the Machine since it was concealed under debris and canvas. It's curiosity, not idiocy.
