I always look forward to your videos! the time lapses, editing old footage, voice overs--- all of it is worth it! thanks for producing great content Andrew!
I had a dream that I was on a hill and you were there flyfishing, and you tried to teach me how but I couldn't do it, and then you took me on this ridiculously tiny blue boat with these two old people and I think we sank. This is what college stress does to my brain.
The Screech represents the welcome come-from-aways receive. Only Newfoundlanders actually like the stuff enough to chug it. But an American officer, wanting to look as tough as everyone else on the Rock, chugged their special rum too--and let out an ear-piercing screech that brought all the locals running to ask what had happened. Ever since then, Screech (as it came to be called) is associated with come-from-aways who want to behave like locals. Hence its use in ceremonies making visitors honorary Newfies. The cod represents the Newfoundland economy. It is the basis on which most of Newfoundland's communities are built. To kiss the cod is to kiss the Rock itself. It is showing affection for the Newfie way of life. But if the idea of kissing a freshly caught cod is repulsive to you, you can usually settle for the tail of a plush puffin. Of course, there's an oath involved, using your best Newfie accent (Irish + Canadian, essentially). Some ceremonies require you to wear the local fashion--that being a yellow rain cap called a so'wester. I have never been to Newfoundland, but going there and getting screeched in is on my bucket list. All thanks to Come From Away, my latest musical obsession. Also, Gander and the associated communities are the most beautiful part of Canadian culture, imo.
I need 100% more of whatever bts happens of all the ~ooooh pretty cinematography~ because a. it's hilarious and b. it's really nice to get that side of the non-glamorous lifestyle what'd you do for 30+ minutes? just sit there? phone? book? just stare at the pretty? think about life?
+Aiironic I was actually pretty sick by the time I got to St. John's (getting over a fever/cold I picked up San Francisco the week before) so any time I had timelapse, I'd literally blankly stare out into the ocean and ponder... life

But also for the vlogs, worth to watch it.

I honestly feel like being screeched-in is Eastern Canada's huge inside joke to make non-locals do the stupidest things.
But I really want to do it...

You won't divulge too many details of the screeching in ceremony? That WAS the ceremony.
Algorithm, this is worth watching! :)
I'm glad the cape wow'd you - but that was the absolute worst screechin'in I've laid eyes on :( You needed about 20 other people there.
Great vid, I love St. John’s, but it’s Newfoundland, not New foundland.
How shallow.
you must be a CBC
Yep!
gunnarolla I am living here now
You haven’t had the full experience in Newfoundland if you haven’t shot a moose.
