You’re always inspirational Woody! Nice keyboard riffs. Really love the Electric Piano lines you play, born from DX7 and other famous boards in your history.
Hey Woody, I love that you put as much enthusiasm and information in video's for "lower-end" boards as the more expensive stuff. I'm interested to hear this board through your system vice the built-in speakers. Great tease for Autumn; looking forward to seeing what's coming. good catch cliff, forgot about the H88! I do gravitate myself towards cheaper and used gear, I'll leave the RD2000 and Nord Stage 3 for the other players. I'm a cheapskate I guess. :)
I began learning to play keyboard when I was 11 on a Casio MT100, had mini keys, 10 auto accompaniment styles and about 12 tones and a 5 band graphic equaliser (not quite sure why). Learned by Kenneth Baker books "The complete Keyboard player". The Casio cost my parents £110 in 1986. Learning this way I learned about what notes made up chords etc... but I do regret not going on and learning to play proper piano, my left hand is pretty stubborn when it comes to playing something simultaneously these days. Looking forward to your new direction, but hope you'll still occasionally dip into a secondhand classic synth now and again.

looks and sounds nice for a budget instrument, I'm surprised that keyboards don't come with digital music displays with the falling prices of LED and LCD displays.
Great unboxing. If this thing had MIDI out and proper pitch and mod wheels I'd seriously consider it for a main keyboard controller. I think it looks gorgeous. Very future retro. Edit: I'm really impressed with the sounds on this unit as well. Sounds superb. I owned a Roland A-49 in the past and it had the best key action of any cheap controller I've laid hands on. It was totally playable for $180. Roland knows how to make a good keyboard. The pitch/mod stick was unusable for me however; short throw and spring loaded. What's the point of modulation if you can't leave it where you want and keep playing? I don't understand why Roland continues to feature these. Their head is in the sand on this point. I actually cracked the A-49 open and removed the spring. So while it still had a very short throw; at least it staid where I put it so I could actually perform with it.
that's a neat trick to remove the spring! I prefer separate pitch and mod wheels myself for most stuff, but for imitating intruments like a guitar the pitch stick has its advantages.

What a nice piece of equipment! I might have bought this one instead of the A49 if it was available. This might be a bit much to ask, but could you make a video (or maybe a series) for absolute beginners if you have the time? You know, kinda where to start if you know almost nothing, what to look up and learn first to be able to actually practice, the absolute basics and stuff. I really want to learn playing the keyboard, but I don't have enough time to go to music school due to work :/ I'd rather play some nice synthwave instead of videogames. Anyway, thanks for your hard work sir.
Yeah, I expected the JV/XV General MIDI recreation that doesn't sound like Fantasia, the background pad is brighter and the bell sound is very digital. My question is if they've used Digital Circuit Behaviour or it's a sample of the original D-50
I have a Yamaha PSR E433 and it serves me well, but it's so heavy to carry to weddings or other events that is hurting my back and my shouders, I think I'm going to Roland Go:Piano because it's looks like lighter and smaller... these keys are very different to any of the roland synth-action controllers. they are very light weighted and the size is larger/longer. quite cheap feeling, but ok.
So it looks like an ABS plastic toy. The price is also right to be an ABS plastic toy. Especially when you click the instrument selection buttons and you see how the plastic gives a bit. Keys themselves look good for the price bracket. I didn't see any pedal, did one came with the keyboard? You can't really learn piano without at least a cheap flat pedal. Is it a standard midi? Can you connect it to an android tablet and it just works? Tutorials sounds great. Thinking of myself I would love to see a series on "essential repertoire" or some entry bits into various genres. Exercises and learning tips are always great too.
thx for the comments and questions, i will try to address in a follow up video. no pedal. yep, plastic case is a bit flimsy for my liking, however doesn't seem to affect the playing experience. only usb midi fo pc and bluetooth for the phone.
Nice vid Woody, again. What did you mean, though, about keyboards going from E-E? I have owned quite a lot of 5 octave keyboards and they have all been C-C, in fact I can't think of one 5 octave keyboard which goes E-E. Please correct me if i'm wrong...
No "nonsense filters" here...I was just curious! I thought: maybe the Nords or other 76 note keyboards or something... I know that the Korg Monologue has funny octaves but that's all I could think of...
HI how do you compare the sound of the Roland Go with the P121? You mentioned in the latter that the sound was tinny. Is it still better than the Go Piano?
This keyboard is pretty nice. I almost bought one, but I found out it skipped notes or stutter as I tried it at the store. I cannot believe this keyboard is indeed 128 polyphonic. It's really a big let down for an otherwise very promising little keyboard (no MIDI OUT). I loved the jazz scat and Fantasia patches. Cheers
Nice demo. The music stand is generic with every digital keyboard (nothing exciting). Tend to have bad experience with the stand. Once I was in a performance where a pianist was playing a tune with a keyboard on stage. The pages of sheet music were taller than the plastic music stand and kept falling off causing a bit of an embarrassment. At home the music stand comes in handy but in a public performance you can setup a much sturdier music stand behind the keyboard that sits on the floor and the paper copies are less likely to fall off.
Slight oops on the 61 C-to-C... That's normal for 61 key keyboards... it's the 73 key ones that usually (but don't always) go E-to-E... Nice looking keyboard though... The click on changing sounds (and other controls) would get annoying pretty quickly I think, but guessing there's a setting for that... All the best for the new video series using this keyboard...
Can you recommend a very good keyboard (around 70 keys) less than $2K, with piano like keybed, and the greatest breadth of sounds (organ, piano, synth, drums, strings, pads, etc.)? Thank you.
Go for a nice early 2000s used keyboard, and get a really great full weighted action. I absolutely adore my Korg TR-88 which uses the same engine as the Triton LE. An early 2000 high end yamaha keyboard with full 88 key weighted action will also be a beast and will be configurable to do anything you want. If you're playing out live, think about how you're gonna want to set up your live sets (patches, fills, etc). Then go find the board that fits your workflow and style.
Very good item and price for music / keyboard beginners. Best not to spend thousands on a better instrument until the student is established for a year or so. Weighted keys being the only issue for piano students.
Hi. I want to buy this piano and had a question. The Go Piano comes with onboard sounds. What happens when I want to the sounds from software (such as mainstage sounds) instead of the onboard sounds? Is it possible to do that? If so, how do you do it?
Using it for a year now. The only thing that annoys me is backlight display. It is so bright that I must covet it when playing in not well lighted environment. I will wait for the warranty to end and I will try to disable this light permanently.
i totally agree on that, it's glaringly bright when I try to film it. I was gonna go through the manual and see if there is a setting, but I guess you already tried that.
Honestly I can’t think of any 61 note keyboard that doesn’t run C to C. I really don’t know where you’ve ever seen one that runs E to E, not even your favourite the Roland D50.
on going battle you`ll agree Woody with all the keyboard manufacturers, they`ve just put their template of Roland sounds into a different form-factor I take it? (again) not just Roland do this but tons of other brands. it's tiresome, to the extent when you unbox a new Roland keyboard it`ll just be a variant of a sound canvas? :(
61 keys never starts on E and ends on E. This is typical. I wish 76 keys keyboards were also starting and ending on C. You need that bottom end lower than E.
Once again... no true midi ports. Thanks for nothing Roland. Since it won't play with ANY of my 25 years worth of collected hardware, it would get about the same amount of use as a rubber door stop. I'm sure this was created to take some of the market from the Yamaha NP11. The Yamaha has fewer sounds, but sounds better imho, costs less, and yes, has true midi(not just usb). The NP11 does also have usb, but I would never use it. Even my first Casio keyboard had true midi in, out, and through. Why did midi ports, once a necessity, become an elitist function only worthy of more expensive keyboards? Too many companies are trying to tell us what we should want, instead of listening to us, and taking note of what we say we need in a product. I mostly stopped purchasing newer keyboards over a decade ago, when USB started to replace midi. Consequently, I've bought many thousands of dollars worth of older gear. That's money that will never make it back to the manufacturers. Yea, I feel a little jaded... if anybody cares.
Yes I think the show still runs but Jonathan Ross was presenting it last time I watched... I have a funny feeling that Barry Norman may have indeed left us for good... Yes just checked, he passed away last year. Rather sad...he was part of my youth - Watching him review generally rubbish 1980s films with his sardonic smirk...
yes it would be interesting to try the equivalent Casio. They might sound as good (not convinced though since the Roland uses JV/XV sound engine and samples) but need to compare the keybeds and features.
Keys has more sounds, but it's missing the Rhodes without FX, but it has other (and more) Rhodes aounds with FX. The Piano model has better acoustic Piano's. They have that string resonance thing going on. I also prefer it for EP's. Keys has a really cool looper though. If you want to get into electronic music or try different instruments, Keys. If you like Piano, Piano.
Watching you having fun is really the best feeling ever, I just hope you keep making more videos because I enjoy every single one of them.

Enjoyed the video looking forward to more about Roland GO.
I also want a keyboard... at the moment i play on my phone with a app..
Can ypu record your performance as with the Go Keys? I find the Go Piano speakers and piabo sound way better.
I love you man pls keep doing this you are so gooooood!!!!! Love your videos. Cheers
Greetings from switzerland😂👍
hi, very nice of you to comment, cheers.
is this compatible to any ampli ?
This keyboard is pretty nice. I almost bought one, but I found out it skipped notes or stutter as I tried it at the store. I cannot believe this keyboard is indeed 128 polyphonic. It's really a big let down for an otherwise very promising little keyboard (no MIDI OUT). I loved the jazz scat and Fantasia patches. Cheers
hi, i'll look out for that when I'm playing it myself, thanks for the info!
Woody what song are you playing at 22:55? Sounds Awesome!
cool, it was "i wish i knew how it is to be free" or similar... :)
Hi Woody! Have you tried using it as midi via Bluetooth? Great videos by the way!
no i have not, i don't think I have anything else that can transmit or receive midi blue
The Roland App is distinctly average, though the Diary feature is pretty great. Shame some of the months don't have a 1st (really!!!).
Thanks Woody nice one👍
All the best for the new video series using this keyboard...
thanks, yes, i have realized the error of this statement. but if you say it convincingly enough, it sounds correct.
Woody Piano Shack I agree Woody - all my 61 key boards go from b# to b#
;-)
How much does it go for im from south africa
"play anytime" what tune is that? or should it say "play any time"?
Can you recommend a very good keyboard (around 70 keys) less than $2K, with piano like keybed, and the greatest breadth of sounds (organ, piano, synth, drums, strings, pads, etc.)? Thank you.
Should have mentioned, I would be using it for live playing out.
Nord's electro series might not be bad to check out!
Does this keyboard come with a rhyme section?????? Hope someone can help...Cheers!
I think it's annoying when the power jack is at the back in the middle, always clumsy connecting. Better on the side, even better one on both sides.
agree, especially if you put it on your desk.
Thanks, its very good te yo piano
Hi. I want to buy this piano and had a question. The Go Piano comes with onboard sounds. What happens when I want to the sounds from software (such as mainstage sounds) instead of the onboard sounds? Is it possible to do that? If so, how do you do it?
you connect gopiano to pc with usb cable, install roland USB midi drivers and you're good to go!
Woody Piano Shack so it will work automatically and mute the onboard sounds and use the software sounds instead?
just turn down the volume on the gopiano!
I bet you could find some tinted tape or film that you could cut to fit over it easy and cheap enough.
Honestly I can’t think of any 61 note keyboard that doesn’t run C to C. I really don’t know where you’ve ever seen one that runs E to E, not even your favourite the Roland D50.
jon, i was talking rubbish for once.
Are the keys weighted like a piano?
No, more like a synth
What type of batteries do you need
AA
Hey what song was he playing at 16:50 Thanks
Jujhaar Singh some kind of canteloupe island¿
Woody has a new look and haircut !
don't worry, it's growing back quickly.
Woody it looks good on you.
on going battle you`ll agree Woody with all the keyboard manufacturers, they`ve just put their template of Roland sounds into a different form-factor I take it? (again) not just Roland do this but tons of other brands. it's tiresome, to the extent when you unbox a new Roland keyboard it`ll just be a variant of a sound canvas? :(
Where did you purchased it?
it was just on loan to me!
Ok thank you
61 keys never starts on E and ends on E. This is typical. I wish 76 keys keyboards were also starting and ending on C. You need that bottom end lower than E.
anyone know if u can turn the reverb off on this bad boi
Are the keys waited?
no
At this price this sells for the only way to get a weighted keyboard would be to go on craigslist and get a really crap-sounding 1990s e-piano.
Can the piano sound be played so softly that no sound is generated at all?
i'll try that for you next time I use it, probably someone else will confirm or deny before then...
Looks great for hotels and on the road ......
15:38. "Rhodes"? I have a Fender Rhodes 88 suitcase from 1974 and the Roland sounds NOTHING like a Rhodes I'm afraid to say.
Nice hair cut argued with the lawn mower woody
Wow didn't recognize you with the fresh cut my man!!
Yea, I feel a little jaded... if anybody cares.
we care! thx for sharing.
Can't have everything for nothing.
It's such a tease when Woody does his unboxing slowly...
omg
Good man.
I like your video, and I also want this keyboard too hahaha
Was that the theme to Film (Year) with Barry Norman? heehee not heard that for years!
yes it was! doesn't that show still run on TV? i heard the presenter had left us.
Yes I think the show still runs but Jonathan Ross was presenting it last time I watched... I have a funny feeling that Barry Norman may have indeed left us for good... Yes just checked, he passed away last year. Rather sad...he was part of my youth - Watching him review generally rubbish 1980s films with his sardonic smirk...
god bless Roland.
❤
Your new hair!
yeah, not a good look, but great for the beach!
Looks perfectly acceptable, but Casio has been killing it with the cheap keyboards. They’ve got keyboards that sound as good for $100 or less.
John Sch more like $175 for the new aix model. My old $120 CTK is not this nice sounding, though it does have some other fun features.
yes it would be interesting to try the equivalent Casio. They might sound as good (not convinced though since the Roland uses JV/XV sound engine and samples) but need to compare the keybeds and features.
Roboprogs you’re right, I didn’t pay that close of attention to the price of the Casio... but yeah, you can get a very nice sounding casio for $175 😁
But does the casio have a nice feeling synth keyboard action?
Can you transpose it?
Recommendations?, Go Piano or Go Keys?
Keys has more sounds, but it's missing the Rhodes without FX, but it has other (and more) Rhodes aounds with FX. The Piano model has better acoustic Piano's. They have that string resonance thing going on. I also prefer it for EP's. Keys has a really cool looper though. If you want to get into electronic music or try different instruments, Keys. If you like Piano, Piano.
does it have beats ?
Yes
@@konradhausmann6359 thanks
Fiiiiiirss.... Damn! Second! SO close!
