- Sky News host Rita Panahi has blasted an “ungrateful” woman whinging about how supportive her parents were when she was growing up.
The woman in the video said her parents showing up at all her events sometimes felt “excessive” and “repetitive”.
“What makes this lean more towards the negative in my opinion in terms of behaviour is that if I ever didn’t want them to show up to every single showing of something, that was considered to be disrespectful,” she said.
She added that it was a pattern of “controlling behaviour” for “narcissistic” parents.
Ms Panahi branded her a “pampered little princess” for complaining about her childhood.
This insane girl IS the narcissist, not her caring parents..
She would have been happier as a latchkey kid, I imagine. I know I was.

In Germany we call those parents "helicopter parents". Here, alot of 7 year old children go, or ride to elementary school on their own. Without any parents around. That goes for alot of Europe. Its part of raising independent and self reliant children.

Just like me, my dad helped me out for years financially when epilepsy developed. He was a "really great guy" (his words) and gave me rides, bought presents for my kids. Everyone loved him. Of course, he always chose where we went and he donated money to me treating me like I was a charity, in front of other people. I guess he just made this mistake? He also hid my existence from his family members, if they knew about me then he lied and told them that the reason that he wasn't there for me in childhood was that he didn't know that I existed until I was 13. I could go on and on but narcissism is a real thing. They truly put on an image for the world that makes them look like a great person while they try to control everything. Their image and their desires is their reason for being.

My teenager niece through marriage went through a bashing of her grandparents phase recently. Said they gave her vacations and gifts to buy her love! Never have I wanted to slap someone more in my life. My in-laws are the kindest most generous people I know. Since I’ve known them since I was 8, I can say I know them better than her.

Huh. Both of my parents had to work 40+ hours a week. I wish they had time to come to my school.... But they were working their asses off. Oh, and I had at job at 15 to pay for my own clothes, my car, my insurance, gas, and everything else.

My kids ABSOLUTELY expected/wanted me to show up for every single event and I went!!
Good for them, but what if they didn't? It's perfectly fine to be really supportive, but if your child says they don't want you at an event, maybe respect that. They're their own person. Especially with teens; if they're with a trusted adult, like a dance teacher or instructor, I'd personally say it's fine for me to not be there. Let them have some room to be their own person, develop their own thoughts.
Don't get me wrong, while the person here is kinda in the wrong (narcissistic isn't the word I'd use, more like overbearing or hovering), they kinda have a point.

To the girl who complained about her parents, sure there are some who need more space to freely explore themselves than others…. BUT…
…a huge portion if not the majority of kids who have either a parent who hardly shows up vs a parent who always shows up, which do you envision having a higher rate of mental health problems down the road? Of course the former, cause neglect is arguably the worst form of abuse on the psyche. Now, not every kid will feel it’s abuse and there are some who need more space than support, but literally she should instead of seeing how her parents trying really hard to be there was potentially harmful to her, instead expand on the gratitude she has for never having to risk being a neglected kid. It’s easy to pick apart at the little problems and even fabricate them out of thin air when you’re protected from ever knowing the endlessly deep chasm of real hellish problems that really exist out there.
I have real experience with this… I initially took my dad showing up as being fake and just doing it out of obligation.
But later I’m realizing just how bad parenting can get, and now I am so grateful for my parents and work hard to reinforce the gratitude rather than put a microscope on the shortcomings because they fit the bill that a large number of parents never could dream of doing.
