    Finally someone who used the same speaker and mic position for each mic. Jesus, I’ve gone through ten videos on e609 comparisons and they’ve all either got them on different speakers than the comparison mic or they’re switching them out and not marking the position AT ALL. Just wanted to say thank you for the thought and effort.
    That guitar tone is thicc btw.

    You have be careful when comparing mics in this demo, as the signals are not level-matched. The e906 must have a higher output, as it is about 2b louder that the other mics. Louder signals will tend to sound better to our ears (more full, articulate, and in your face), so it can be deceiving. But once you level-match the clips, the difference across mics is not so dramatic. Otherwise, great comparison.

    • @sillennium
      @sillennium  5 років тому +32

      Yes it was hotter. I left it that way as I felt it was a difference between the mics. I probably should have had one additional comparison with the level matched. Thx for watching

    E906 with a 57 for live and 906 with a ribbon mic for studio. Always dual mic your cab for truly mixable tone. It's the mixing equivalent of a guitar player using two amps to mix tone instead of one.

    All three are great microphones. I own all three of them. Sennheiser E-906 is my favourite of the three. Sadly, it is also the most expensive. But, the price is surely worth it as it is also the most versatile of three.

    906 brings out the guitar. But I’m also Shure you can eq the 57 to get similar sound, BUT for setting up a working band when you’re a player AND the sound guy, the 906 is the winner with easy, drape over the amp and go.

    I loved this shootout and dearly 'd like to think that this project is straight from the heart. That said, in that line, my favorite outcome would be the 609. BUT the extra options from the 906 do tip the balance.

    The sm57 sounded best with this guitar and setup. You can hear in the first demo that the low strings were clearer with the 57. Then it got muddy with the 609, and then cleared up a tiny bit with the 906. And, for some reason, the 906 was the loudest of the 3 mics.

      There is a slight level bump on the 906. I left it like that as I wanted it be exactly the same settings nothing changing. In hindsight I should have pointed that out with a graphic as that wasn't noticeable until I mixed the audio

    I think the SM57 and the e906 are a close match. However I have to say in this video I seem to like the 57 the best. Listen to the single notes on the G-string. The sound most powerful on the 57. I started out wanting in 906 before watching this vid but now I'm thinking about just getting the 57. Thanks for taking the time to make this vid and help the rest of us Scott!

    Great review. I’ve been trying to decide between the 609 and 906. But being that both GC and Sweetwater have the 609 on a sale price thru 12/31 (which is rare for this item) at less than half the price of a 906, I’m hard pressed not to get the 609. I’ve watched several comparisons today but I believe yours has ultimately made up my mind. Thanks again for a great comparison...I am tortured no longer. LOL

    Super helpful. I know what range I'm trying to capture, which is the lower midrange where the 906 excels--it is not muddy in there at all. Most mics can be eq'd to get what you want though you can never add clarity.

      @@sillennium Well, I've had some time to use the mic, and as an added bonus it pairs wonderfully with my Shure SM-81 to record my acoustic guitar: e906 at the lower bout with presence boost, and Sm-81 six inches back from the 15th fret. Super clean and natural. I've never had a mic capture the deeper resonances of my guitar quite as well, although some studio ribbon mics sure do justice to the highs. Thanks again. :)

  • @Timbotao
    @Timbotao 3 місяці тому +1

    Yeah you did a better job than other videos on this same subject... and as per... I really don't think there is much in it, the differences between the 3 is pretty negligible from a normal person's ears... of course guitarists and mix engineers are going to say there's a big difference!, but in my ears as a video/audio mix person... across and entire mix of a band, and especially live performances etc... there's not going to be much in it>>>
    I like what I saw someone else said on another review I saw, the e609 is more "ballsy" and the e906 is more "articulate"...and you can hear that... I like how in this comparison the SM57 proves that it has stood the test of time, and still a great performer after all this time... why change what isn't broke... I'd prob buy the e906 as I get a good smattering of clean guitars as well as some more indie and rocky things... so that extra clarity will probably be more useful over many different jobs over time...

    I own several 57s and 2 609s and 2 e906 mics. Live, I prefer the 609 mics. The e906 are excellent mics but the added selector switch adds tones and boost that introduces problems in a live performance. In a studio recording e906 is a little better than the 609 because you can "tweek" the e906 anytime necessary. But it's hard to beat a 57 in a studio.

    The e609 and the e906 have a presence boost in the upper mids that really thin out the guitar. You can try moving it to the edge of the cone, you can try some EQ, but by time you notch out the "ice pick" you're left with a dull sound. The 906 is definitely better but not really worth the price. I always end up going back to the SM57 or ATM650 for guitar cabs.

      SM57s never really sounded much like the amp did to me. If I wanted my guitar to sound like that I would have made my guitar sound like that. I wish he had commenter on how the recorded sound compared to the sound in the room. A 57 does capture a certain aggressive quality but and that may make it easier to mix and cut through the mix but a 609 does a great job of sounding like what I hear at a reasonable price. If a condenser mic is available, I'll take it but a 609 does well at a low price.

      @@sillennium playing is subjective , there are thousands of players play better than each other but if someone is reviewing a product they have to do justice in terms of playing or getting the best sound they can. A poorly made review can affect a company or some other guys preferences in many ways we can't pretend sometimes. Sorry if I offended you, take care .

    Why does nobody use a reamp on these demo videos? The differences between the Sennheisers in particular is going to be subtle. Way more subtle than the difference between two performances of even the same riff on the same instrument. Its a big downvote from me chief.

      Then if you want to see videos done a certain make them that way. That is why I started making the ones I did. Do something about rather than complaining

      @@sillennium Nah I'm good just complaining for now. I don't need to make something better to criticize something. If you had hated the mics you were demoing, or any other product for that matter, would the fact that you've never built something better invalidate your opinion?

      There's a problem with your approach to shootouts. That's all I'm saying. Use a reamp box or record both mics at the same time in as similar positions as you can and they'll be a lot more interesting and useful to people trying to see the little differences.

      I appreciate the feedback but no I will not use a reamp box.

      @@sillennium I think I still heard plenty of difference, but they are objectively correct that a reamp is gonna give a better comparison. One of my mates is an engineer, and on some forum he's part of someone very well renowned (but not immediately memorable because I had no idea who it was) did a demo demonstrating the huge difference in tone, when you place mics on the exact same part of a speaker, but whether it was near the bit of glue on the driver or not. I've not heard it myself but apparently it's night and day surprisingly. Anyway TLDR consistency is very important to make the best judgement. Can totally see why you might find it more interesting to play for each clip though, and I could definitely make out plenty of contrast between mics from it.
