Could have been a tree hole, but this being Japan where everything is on a big or little volcano, could have been a small steam vent. It's not good to be out without a shovel, but you can use your board to dig steps out of the snow or to pull enough snow down to stand on and get out. Nah bro don’t be, this is backcountry in the trees where you need to be a lot more careful. If you stick to the groomed trails at the main resort than this is literally never going to happen. That being said I still prefer tree trails and backcountry😂
Not as bad. But I fell 5 feet into a snow covered creek. I was being stupid and didn't see the hazard pole. You fell way further and there was no marking. That's scary. This accident seems completely unavoidable.

How do these holes form?

Can someone explain how this hole forms? Is it like a cravasse?
Its not just a single hole, underneath theres a tunnel under alot more of the snow!
Incredible. So do you guys try to fill that in before taking off? Or cordon it off somehow? Forgive me, I don't know much about snow sports.

When ski alone or with my friends in woods, should i carry rope in my backpack? I love skiing in woods but if this would happen, it would be scary
Good luck getting out if you fall in headfirst
Try to avoid skiing in the woods alone.
I'm not sure this is very common. Never seen it in western US.
This taught me a valuable lesson: Always carry a rope in your pack when going in the outdoors.

You telling me there are random air pockets below the snow? How does that even form?
If im not mistaken its where a tree was that got dug out to create the path

I may be dead but it's not all bad. I got the video! Hurray, wait no.
Still should have called ski patrol and told them about the hole so it could be marked.

Nah hole wasn't there.... snow dropped under him, initiating the fall, then gives completely and drops him in.
