Could have been a tree hole, but this being Japan where everything is on a big or little volcano, could have been a small steam vent. It's not good to be out without a shovel, but you can use your board to dig steps out of the snow or to pull enough snow down to stand on and get out. That would be your best move in a situation like that with no shovel. Good thing that your mates were there.

Dang! I guess falling into a crevasse isn't as rare as I thought it would be. I've seen tons of video's like this in the last few days after watching a tree well rescue. Now my recommended videos are loaded with avalanches, tree wells & crevasse rescues.
Nah bro don’t be, this is backcountry in the trees where you need to be a lot more careful. If you stick to the groomed trails at the main resort than this is literally never going to happen. That being said I still prefer tree trails and backcountry😂
Not as bad. But I fell 5 feet into a snow covered creek. I was being stupid and didn't see the hazard pole. You fell way further and there was no marking. That's scary. This accident seems completely unavoidable.

what the fuck are the odds you fall RIGHT there where the chimney is.. Awsome vid and I hope someone marked it with an X and told patrol
Incredible. So do you guys try to fill that in before taking off? Or cordon it off somehow? Forgive me, I don't know much about snow sports.

Tree wells are so dangerous. Happy you guys are ok.
not a tree well though
Please tell me you alerted ski patrol about it so they could mark it off as a danger zone for others to see?
Its not just a single hole, underneath theres a tunnel under alot more of the snow!
Maybe he was just so fucking massive that when he fell he created a 10 foot crater in the ground
Wow I was thinking a avalanche or something not that. Wired how it made that perfect circular drop area above that creek
Can someone explain how this hole forms? Is it like a cravasse?
