I feel quite emotional after watching this epic video. 3 years ago at age 48 I finally hung up my boots after 35 years of pure devotion to 2-strokes. I miss my bike so much (250RM)... the smells, the sounds & the adventures. Thankyou Neville Bradshaw and Max for putting it all together, and for making my life more enjoyable!

I’ve still got my 94 cr250, just rebuilt. My sons and I are rebuilding a 94 cr125, just rebuilt a 2001 cr250 which will be raced against the 4 strokes. We just bought a low hour 2001 cr500 which is pulled down and getting an overhaul which wasn’t really necessary but why not? All these bikes are ridden often. We’ve bought and sold a lot of them but these ones are staying in the family.
    Cheers from Australia!

Steve Snider I’ve had the cr250 94 since 97. It’s been ridden a lot but still in awesome condition. The cr500 was recently bought and it was only ridden for about 25 hrs but it was $13500. They are very difficult to find nowadays so grab one if you find one because they are not available as they once were.

Anthony Mack I had the rear shock rebuilt by a reputable guy and the front springs we replaced with a set of race tech suited to my weight. It feels nice to me but I know what you mean about soft, that’s what it felt like before.

Steve Snider the prices have gone through the roof, even thought some people here think you can get one for less. They are selling for $18000 in good condition. We have been looking for a while and looked at few that were really abused and they were asking around the 10000 mark.

    • @mking1960
      @mking1960 4 роки тому

Steve Snider I know, it’s crazy but my eldest son and I thought it’s now or never and we were hesitant but now we’re glad because the current price for a good cr500 would be around 16 to 18000. CRAZY!

When I was a kid I remembered when the exact opposite took place, all 250's and above, all field 2-strokes and the thick dense foggy smell, most intense at the start, that followed when 20 two-strokers took off at wide open overly rich carbs. Then there was that one thumping noise of that one 4-stroker, different smell, different sound... Then and there; The 4-stroke guy was the underdog on the exotic machine! Must have been 30+ yr ago...

Just image if Honda would produce a modern 500cc twostroke with fuel injection and all the other modern parts, that machine would be hard to beat for the 4 strokes. I have always said that 2 strokes are better for motocross becuase its on and of the whole time with the throttle witch is ideal for 2 strokes and you can build 2 strokes much lighter then 4 strokes and that is a big plus for dirt bikes..... Also the 2 strokes are simple and cheap to run to 👍🏻 ... So please bring back the 2 stroke motocross!!!

Government has one job and they do it well...feed off the people they are supposed to represent and protect. Amazing that folks just go with it because they don't wanna rock the boat or be different from the rest of the sheople for fear of having to actually use their grey matter or defend their ideas. Too soft to have a conversation that doesn't agree with what they say or even get constructive criticism. A 93 WR500 Yamaha when slightly messaged like the one Damon Bradshaw worked over the works bikes on during the nationals in 92 would be my choice to campaign against thses modern 4 bangers. I've got one and it simply amazes me every time I pin it down a washboarded 150 yard straight. I added an inch to the swing arm took a degree and a quarter out of the neck and it turns better now than my three year old YZ250 which out all bad being it's almost a thirty year old two-stroke.

I've been riding since about age 8. Grew up watching the new bikes come out...both 2 and 4 strokes, way back when they went from 2 shocks in the rear to the Uni-Link suspension that has been around ever since. Funny thing is, once Honda released the water cooled 2 strokes, the engines really never advanced from there too much. First because they were so well engineered and second because they absolutely kicked ass. If you pay attention, as I do as a mechanic, you will notice the 2 stroke engine part numbers don't change all that much, sure there were some small changes to adjust power delivery etc, but their main design essentially stayed very much the same since they were released back in the 80's. They kicked major ass back then...and they still do. I'm a fan of engines...so I love both the 2 and 4 stroke engines. They each have their place and they are both works of art. When I saw this video...I thought a 500 2 stroke against a 450 4 stroke? Its actually not a fair comparison. We shall see, but the 500 is nothing to be taken lightly and I've never met anyone who could ride one at 10 - 10th's...ever. I've ridden them all over the years and know first hand what CR500 means, suit up, strap in and hold tf on...this should be good.

Why did honda, suzuki, kawasaki all stop building 2 stroke quads in the 90s? Leaving only yamaha building banshees for years after.
I guess I didn't clarify each specific bike. True closed course racing machines are exempt from compliance on sound and emmisions. But the versions sold to the public were under scrutiny to be fazed out!
Why does California have its green sticker program. Do you think that was just thought up and implemented all in a day?
It really effects dual sport bikes! You used to be able to plate a dirtbike with horn, lights and ride them legally on road. Not anymore except in certain states.
So ok the EPA isn't hurting motocross directly just yet. I was talking about offroad motorcycling in general! So if you still disagree tell me why they went from 2 strokes to 4 strokes? Probably several reasons I suppose. But why do you think?

I loved reading about the setup of the factory 500's, they ran taller gearing and heavier flywheels to spread out the power and smooth the hit when it comes on the pipe. Thumpers are cool but I love two strokes. Imagine where they would be if the big 4 hadn't stopped the pushing the development of two stroke tech when the 4 strokes started gaining popularity.

The similarity ends there. Yet a 98 CR ridden by a great rider is up to the task with modern stuff. Impossible in decades previously but the advancements have plateaued. @deckard5pegasus673 4 роки тому +9

@@chrishansen8026 How have they ruined the sport? Well I don't want to get into a "flame war" but here it is:
      1) The cost of maintaining a 4 stroke is MUCH higher than a 2 stroke. When I raced(I even made it the pros and had a Honda support rider sponsorship, so I have been around the track a few times…). On a 2 stroke, we could strip down the ENTIRE engine, replace the rings, put new reeds, change piston, re-jet the carburator, etc… and it could be done in one day, and costed much less. No problems with valves or adjusting valves, no fuel injection, or electronics to break, etc, etc.etc.etc.. And the 2 strokes are fast AF!!
      2) Besides maintenance, 4 strokes cost a lot to buy. Again, they have more complex engines, more parts, heavier, complex fuel injection, complex electronics.
      3) 2 stroke racing was massively intense. Back and forth, people passing constantly, etc.etc.. I watch 4 stroke pro racing, for example in the US, and it is pretty much a parade follow the leader. There is much less passing, it is much less frantic, it seems like an enduro with jumps compared to the 2 stroke motocross races.
      4) 2 strokes are lighter, and subjectively much funner to ride, and to watch.
      5) The sound. Yeah baby. Nothing beats the 2 strokes
Conclusion: Cheaper, lighter, faster, easier to maintain, funner, more wild, and sound awesome.
If you have never been in a 2 stroke race in the 90's, I mean, be there actually in person not watch it on an old VHS video, you really can't understand. The races, they can make your stomach and heart come up your throat, they are intense and intimidating. Although, yeah, there is still the 80's and superminis(I think they're called) at Loretta Lynn's, so little ones still get a taste.

Deckard 5 Pegasus sorry about your nostalgia blinding you. They might be cheaper but four strokes are the future so sorry you can’t get with the program grandpa, and the weight of four strokes isn’t really an issue anymore. They really aren’t that much faster anymore either and you can compare lap times of a 250 2 and 4T. Funner isn’t a word nor is it true it’s all up to preference. They are only wild because of the powerband. And 4 strokes are louder and sound loads better, they are deep and bark unlike those weed whacking mosquito sounding engines.

4 stroke is great in the deep, wet mud because of the torque... But you notice in the second and third heat as the track began to dry out the two stroke was kicking ass... On the dry spots of the track Bradshaw was putting 8 to 10 bike lengths between the rider behind him when he lit the gas!!! Impressive run from a 37 year old on a bike that is more than 2 decades old!!!

yeah, I noticed that too, haha. but they're obviously referring to RED as Honda's team color.
