    ok so for context, renaissance and cowboy carter are 2 parts of a 3 part trilogy/act of one big story she’s doing, with each album reclaiming a genre that black artists pioneered (act 1 being renaissance and house music, cowboy carter being act 2 being country) and act 3 is speculated to be rock/punk/alt/etc as the final act. it’s also assumed at the end of the 3 acts will be 1 big visual film of all 3 acts released everywhere at the same time

    • @Saintacy
      @Saintacy Місяць тому +2

      Omg. I didn't even think about rennaissance being a reclaiming of house music. Probably because everyone I knew doing house music from when it started and the house music djs around Houston id listen to to we're not wyt. I just thought house music was gaining popularity again and more artists were incorporating it into their music. Lol I'm an idiot.
      So is her 3rd album going to reclaim techno music? Because that was also born out of Detroit, Father of Detroit techno Juan Atkins, a black artist.
      I'm going to have to listen to reinnassance deeper. And now I have to buy that one too. ❤

    Actually, Jay's cheating does play a big role on Lemonade, the visuals that accompanied the sound make the narrative on this album very, very clearer: the struggle in her relationships intertwine with social commentary, and makes a broader statement on the collective experience that black women face in America.
    I honestly don't think one can fully say they fully listened to Lemonade or Beyoncé without watching the visual part of those albums, they really expand on the concepts and the narratives that each song explores, and are meant to be wachted/listened to together.

    Binge-listening to Beyoncé's albums may seem tempting, but it often undermines the depth of her artistry. To truly appreciate her work, one must allow ample time for the intricate thematic layers to resonate. Beyoncé's albums are a testament to her profound musical acumen and unwavering dedication to her craft. Her meticulous control over production ensures a cohesive and immersive experience for the listener. However, in today's fast-paced world, many are quick to move on to the next fleeting musical trend, missing the opportunity to delve into the profound messages embedded in her music. Beyond her recorded works, Beyoncé's prowess as a performer is unparalleled, captivating audiences with her vocal acrobats, dynamic stage presence, and meticulous attention to detail in her live shows. For those seeking a deeper connection with her artistry, exploring her visual catalogues and live performances offers a gateway to a profound admiration for her talent; It's where most people fall deeply in love with her. I would start with watching the Lemonade visual album, Black Is King, Coachella performance, Live at the Glastonbury, just to begin with.

    The disrespect with that first Renaissance comment.. boi... I'm glad you came around tho.
    Renaissance was no doubt Beyonce's most ambitious project when it came out (me thinks Cowboy Carter might have topped that by its significance but it is still up there as a masterpiece). It was not made to serve as a commercial album but a profound dive into black and black queer culture influence on Dance music (as Cowboy Carter is a study on the Black influence on country music as a reflection of the black foundation of America itself but I digress) and it packs so many references from the Disco music to the ballroom scene that only an artist from Beyonce's caliber would be able to bring to the mainstream. I understand that is not necessarily a first listen instantaneous hype type of album, but more like an art statement you need some context to fully appreciate but when you do.. your mind will be blown.

  • @Literally_me93
    @Literally_me93 Місяць тому +15

    Great reviews and reaction. I loved hearing your perspective of her music as a young gen-z’er who wasn’t around during the height of her commercial success.
    The only thing that kinda of annoyed me was you kept alluding to the fact there were people directing her career with statements like “they realized Beyoncé’s sounds” lol the Vice President of Columbia once said “A lot of artists pretend to be in control of their career, Beyoncé actually is.” And everyone who has worked with her says they are executing her ideas, whether or not she is writing. Also the reason a lot of Beyoncé’s songs are tailored to only her being able to sing them is because she has always been her own vocal producer. In fact, she also was the vocal producer for Destiny’s Child and arranged their harmonies and structure of her songs. One of her sound engineers did a whole university course and talked about how she is very meticulous and would sit in the studio with him making sure the vocals were stacked right. He talked about how one time they were up for 48 hours because she had all these creative ideas for structuring a song that she ended up scrapping. Jonny Cofar, who produced Freedom from lemonade said Beyoncé is a producer, not because she is actually making the beats, but because she is hearing the music. She’ll receive a song from a producer and will tell them to add or take away certain instruments and weave different songs together.
    Something that people try to drag Beyonce for having a lot of credited writers and producers, but that is intentional. She can and has written songs by herself for Destiny’s Child and her solo career. In 2006, when B’Day came out she discussed how she enjoyed making that album due to collaborative nature. She said it’s something that she wants to do because she doesn’t want her sound to become stagnant. But again, she’s always the director.
    Also, I think the reason Beyonce has been able to have a long career is because she never allowed her record label to mold her. Because Columbia Records didn’t believe Destiny’s Child was going to be super successful, her dad who was their manager was able to negotiate a deal that basically gave them full creative control as artists. A deal that usually only veteran musicians get lol. They didnt believe Dangerously in Love would be commercially successful and wanted her to re-record it. When she did B’Day, she self fundrd that entire project and recorded it without Columbia’s knowledge and they were pissed. I Am… Sasha Fierce was probably her first album where they were aligned. And then she fired her father as manager and that’s when she really became more experimental with her sound. She’s been able to go against what’s expected of her which has earned her a loyal fan base while also bringing on new fans.
    And then when you get into the music videos and live performances, again, her collaborators are always talking about how creative and involved she is and how they are bringing her vision to life.

    Kiddo the old sound on Sasha Fierce was deliberately retro already at the time it came out. It sounded mostly 80’s already at the time.
    Btw Destiny’s Child was a vehicle band made by her Dad for her and it was obvious she was Destiny’s Child from the first single No No No. First because of her looks and then once people heard her on Survivor (this is to me Beyoncé’s first album, so many signs of upcoming greatness here in spite of dated sounds, Bootylicious, Fancy, Sexy Daddy…the Emotions cover was a highlight as well as the Independent Women pt2 and Dangerously In Love which was originally on that album)
    People realized then she was singing, co-producing, writing and ad libbing like nobody since Mariah it became clear she was unique. Her MTV performance of Dangerously in Love live with the dove was a turning moment. About the first album. It’s too old?? You don’t know Naughty Girl, Baby Boy, Dangerously In Love? The first two albums are classic. Irreplaceable isn’t Bday’s best song it’s the most generic written and produced by Swedish producers, Ring The Alarm, Get Me Bodied and Upgrade You are imo the best songs there.
    Also you probably respond to Crazy In Love and Irreplaceable because they’ve been played over and over everywhere for decades now and are part of the collective consciousness.
    Also Renaissance isn’t about House music it’s about DISCO and dance in general!
    VOL1 DISCO VOL2 COUNTRY VOL3 ?????( probably ROCK although I hope it isn’t since Country IS Rock)
    Also Madonna’s career is longer than Beyonce’s with albums paving the way in a zeitgeist way since 1982! She is Beyonce’s n.1 career model/blueprint .
    I agree about Renaissance being less memorable than Cowboy Carter even though it’s amazing.
    Taylor Swift cannot hold a candle to Beyonce’s otherworldly talent by no means. No disrespect to TS it’s just the truth.
    Beyoncé will probably be remembered as history’s greatest pop superstar alongside Michael Jackson Prince, Madonna and Mariah. (Arguably alongside Aretha, Stevie, Elton John, Donna, Olivia Newton John, Tina, Whitney, Adele, TS, Ariana, Bruno, Freddie, Sinatra and Elvis) Streisand is in a league of her own being the only one to be an actual Hollywood movie legend.
    We’ll have to see what the future holds for Dua Lipa, Olivia Rodrigo and Harry Styles.
    Great video!

    I appreciate Bey's growth over the years too. Lemonade deserved AOTY 🔥. Everything after Lemonade is Beyoncé picking a genre, using it as the underlying theme for her album, and dominating the 💩 out of the sound. She also makes each album her own by mixing in different sounds to put her own spin on the genre. A true visionary and extraordinary vocalist who takes you on a ride.

    Your review was good. You need to dive into her live performances and see her progression as well as the other albums you missed. Lastly, heres the thing about TS v. Beyonce. TS = Harry Potter, her songs are about her & her life with supporting characters. If youre interested in that with the vocals you dragged, thats perfectly fine. BEYONCÉ = Star Wars, her music is about world building, including multiple stories & people, including her, but also outside of herself. This is why you cant binge her Art. You need to dive into the meaning behind the moves and why songs or collabs were chosen for the overarching era &/or movie. Theres so much more for you to learn and discover to truly appreciate the music that'll be studied for decades to come

    As a Millennial/OG member of the Beyhive, I would say along with Michael, Janet, Diana Ross, and Whitney Houston also paved the way for Beyonce's success. Mary J Blige would also be a predecessor, as she mixed R&B and hip hop in a way that Beyonce pulled from. She's also clearly been influenced by Tina Turner in her performance style.
    Also, while Renaissance does pull from house music, it also draws on disco, funk, afrobeat, hyperpop and 90's era Atlanta bass. Also, as with Cowboy Carter highlighting black country artists, Renaissance also centers and pays homage to black LGBTQ creators and the ballroom subculture, and samples/interpolated classic dance tracks. All of the references are really a great rabbit hole to dive into if you have time
    Also, Ariana is clearly a musical daughter of Mariah Carey IMO

    I found it hilarious for a 20yo to keep saying "its old" not understanding that at the time of release, Beyonce brought new sounds that have been copied by the industry as a whole. So many trends started by Beyonce are now industry standards. Artists ecen changed the day that they drop new music because of Bey. Also. Secretly dropping music wandt really much of a thing until her. I think you need a wider perspective of music and the eras if you want to dive back into an artists catalogue. For context, I saw a review from Reaction Twins for MJ Beat It. They took note of what it must have been like to watch videos that were feature films and the (then cool) way the sidewalk lit up wererver MJ stepped.

    Beyoncé uses her albums to tell a story. It’s like watching a movie. You wouldn’t want to come in 1/4 of the way through, leave and then come back to watch the end or have people to tell you the best part and then go in just to watch that part of the movie. It’s weird, because I didn’t realize that until I watched someone react to her entire Lemonade album recently. Having said all that, let me give you an overview of the movie that is Cowboy Carter:
    This whole album is in response to how she was treated at CMA. American Requiem is telling them about themselves. She researched and it took over 5 years for her to develop this album. The album is full of history and reclaiming music that black people/ slaves started, but were kicked out of once it became popular.
    Blackbird was written by Paul McCartny to give black women/girls hope during the Civil Rights movement . He saw how they were being treated. That’s why all the singers on the song are black women. The others are four black female country singers.
    Let’s just point out that Country radio has an issue with playing black artists so Beyoncé told everyone about her new venture during the Super Bowl then dropped two country songs. The Bey Hive activated and most country stations played her music. But to top it off, her album is presented as it’s own radio station with country legends presenting her music.
    This Album was meant to be Act I. This was Beyoncé’s response to how she was treated at the CMA. The requiem funeral procession was trying to let us know that Country Music was rooted and started by blacks. If you look into the history, it started by people putting on black face for minstrel music making fun of the slaves with their banjos. Then people who are credited with starting country, came to black street artists to learn their craft. Once it became big, black people were pushed aside and they started gate keeping the genre.
    Same thing happened with rock & roll, jazz, blues, and many of the genres that are considered to have been started in America. Thus, Beyoncé is reclaiming all of the music that we’ve been kicked out of that we helped create. It’s why this album delves into all those genres and ends with her buckin breaking down walls and asking if we can hear her now. Then she says that we are the ones who have to clean ourselves of our father’s sins to end the funeral procession .

      @Saintacy Місяць тому +1

      Cowboy Carter also touches on the black cowboy, and spaghetti westerns. Or maybe I'm reading into it a bit more. But yep. I love your explanation.
      I heard a snippet on Cowboy Carter sent the lyrics to my Elvis loving boyfriend asked hi how Elvis is connected to the Beyoncé album. Told him it was Roy Hamilton on Beyoncé album and he knew that Elvis paid homage to Roy Hamilton and paid off his medical bills. We talked a bit how people say Elvis stole from black music, but that wasntvElvis's intention. Elvis started out just wanting to record a song for his mom. Happened to be at a recording studio that was working with many black artists of that time, that not everyone has heard of still.
      I think your comment about how black people got pushed out is very accurate. Elvis wouldn't have gotten airlay with his style of singing which was similar to black artist, Roy Hamilton, if radio stations thought he was black. To determine if an artist was black or white back then, in radio interviews, they would ask them what high school they went to.
      So radio airplay not playing black musicians and playing wyt artists instead, contributed greatly to pushing black musicians out of their own chosen genres of music, whatever that was tbh. And it's been black artists pushed out of country music a long time. And female artists get pushed out of several genres, black female artists definitely pushed out of country music.
