The world has just ended and everything has gone to hell, sometimes you take the weapons you can get. And I think Martin by now actually enjoys seeing the people suffer that did such terrible things to him and others. I doubt he is still really sane
Jared Hopworth is such an interesting character. He's like, the jobber of the flesh. He'll work with anyone, for anyone and even doesn't mind dying all that much. Easily and strangely the most agreeable of monsters.
It makes sense, in a way. Working is a virtue of what the body does, especially according to the standards of our culture. Working on oneself is all we can ever do, both intentionally or unintentionally. For him to be so agreeable means he's just another body for the function, for the cause, to be another cog in the machine. That's how I see it, anyhow. There's a quote he gives before he dies to John's revenge, he doesn't mind. He calls it life. "Just people using each other up." My interpretations of the victims: Reese/Gristle Bloom Orchid: Insecure & self-hatred Patricia/Bone Rose: Anorexia Cutaway Tulip: Plastic surgery addiction Maeve/Lily of the Damned: Over awareness of body and body dysmorphia
My interpretation: Gristle bloom: It seems to get bigger and bigger to take over everything. So I'd imagine body dysmorphia for getting swole. Bone rose: obsession with perfection and plastic surgery. Always requiring immense effort to keep up or your ego "shatters". Cutaway tulip: fear of aging and the degradation of your appearance associated. It's stated it gets harder to manage the bigger (older) it gets. Lily of the damned: fear of injury and mortality related to your own biology.
I'm somewhere in the middle of you two but I think all of the flowers represent different kinds of dysmorphia. The gristlebloom orchid seems like a direct analog for the kind that gymbro-types feel with their sensitivity for being perceived as "small". The bonerose stands in for the opposite kind of dysmorphia, that feeling of "too large"-ness that results in disorders like anorexia and bulimia. The cutaway tulip is the kind of dysmorphia that only body modification feels like the solution to (which gets increasingly intensive as the body ages, as it gets harder to fight against your body's natural aging processes). And the lily of the damned is the dysmorphic horror that comes from reducing a person's mind? soul? being? down to just a body, or maybe the horror of feeling a disconnect between body and mind? This last one was kinda open-ended Man I think this was one of the episodes that really got me
I’ve always thought of it like this Gristlebloom: the strive to always be bigger, better, stronger, even if it destroys you you will do anything to be as strong as you think you need to be which turns out to be a never ending ladder of striving for an ever higher definition of perfection. Like the other commenter i feel it relates strongly to gymbros and this relatively new heavy pressure on men to be the best they can in both looks and strength and anything less is wrong and weak Bone rose: I have no better way to describe this than anorexia, or bulimia, or any other eating disorder that’s makes you want to do nothing more than get smaller and smaller and smaller until you finally reach a standard you are happy with, or you die. Cutaway tulip: the want to be something other than you are, you don’t know what, unlike the gristlebloom wants to be stronger and the bone rose wants to be smaller, it just wants to be something else in no particular direction than away from what it currently is, and it will maim and bite and claw and cut until it is finally happy with its form, until it grows tired of that one and begins its cycle again. Lily of the Damned: the want to be nothing, not to be dead but to be nothing. The pure hatred of existence in any other way than in mind and soul. For no particular reason does it hate its form so, it just hates it has a form to begin with and has no choice but to live and be stuck with it, or to die and be utterly gone in each and every way.
My interpretation: Gristlebloom orchide: bigorexia, need to grow bigger, references of gyms and the use of dehydration. Bone rose: anorexia/bulimia, need to be 'less' and being 'in the bones' Cutaway tulip: addiction to cosmetic procedures to be 'perfect' and to prevent 'ageing' Lily of the damned: disability or chronic illness, your body betraying you and no chance to escape
i thought of Famine's restaurant in that one statement, the letter to Gertrude from Adelard Decker. when he's talking about that sort of Fun Fair where when you win a prize it's a bone and everyone was trying to suck the marrow from it and stuff
little straw hats on all of his various lumps..... 1567 knee pads... stray femur sticking out that he hangs a lil basket on..... daisy-patterned apron... im DEAD
When he started talking about how the rose must be kept under blinding light I just... they had to have consulted an actual dysmorphic for this one like that hits too close
okay its definitely starting to feel like the fears are sliding into each other, like the burning house had mentions of toxic and mold, last episode gave me serious stranger/spiral vibes and this one also mentions mold and corruption again. idk what that means but i sure noticed it
My guess is, the closer to The Penopticon they get, the less distinct the lines between the fears become. They start to blend together more and more as they approach the center of it all, as it were. But that’s just a theory at the moment. 😊
Well, remember that there aren't distinct boundaries for the Fears. There are bits where they blend and mix and create all these beautiful new horrors. Most of the statements this season are all Extinction flavoured as well.
I am consistently in awe at Jonny’s creativity writing these. I never would’ve thought of something so devastatingly elegant for the Flesh. I never would’ve thought of a damnation such as this AT ALL. I don’t even know how to compliment it anymore, I feel like all I’ve been doing is commenting my praises of the writing every episode, xD. And Alex voicing Jared as well????? I never would’ve guessed if I hadn’t read a comment about it (I usually don’t stick around for the credits). That is some INCREDIBLE voice acting range.
"It is loved by the hands that tend it, but that love sows only misery and fear. It is the worst place that has ever been beautiful, and it should not exist." This episode has wonderful imagery, the unsettling description of the garden in such a beautiful and terryfing way, is amazing! I really enjoyed it! I actually feared Jared a bit after the first time he was mentioned, don't really understand why, but the thought of malleable bones, made me so uneasy. Yet, as bad as it sounds, I think I actually like Jared's character... him simply being a devoted gardener in the apocalypse is so funny and almost nice!
I really like him and I mean even Jon says that he usually only works with the willing (without full disclosure about what working with him entails but still) compared to other avatars he's somehow one of the best I mean sure he's like a bully but compared to some of the other avatars he looks like a saint
This reminds me of a short story i wrote when i was ten, about two raccoons who trap their hunter in a giant pit in the earth, bury him, and then use his decomposing body as fertilizer
still not over the fact that Jared is voiced by Alex also the mood and phrasing in this episode kind of reminds me of of Hannibal (the Tv series, naturally). Like ... I know it's awful and wrong and all that ... but it's still beautiful in a fascinating way
I do like Jared Hopworth, he's got a air of fair play around him and has a sense of humour, seems almost trustworthy and I do love that voice Alex does for him + the accent, something something pun based around common saying relating to good bones/heart/organs and implying he has many to choose from
He somehow became my favorite character even before season 4 and was one of the motivators for me to make my Magnus archives OC I don't know why but I really like the meat man
the writing for the ed/body dysphoria plants is really well done. the lily of the damned is my favorite.. "spirituality, afterlife, transhumanism, religion. all must be roundly dismissed or mocked" ouch :(
This episode is so friggin warped. It’s brilliant. Even the minor characters, the people groaning in the background, they really do sound like they’re being twisted into inhuman shapes. Also I heard somewhere that Alex does Jared’s voice without any effects added. Huh.
This is definitely an interesting one. First off, the knowledge that The Flesh feeds on Body-Image issues is an interesting note that I'm sure most of us didn't realize. Secondly, Jared has always been one of my favorite avatars, primarily because of the whole aesthetic behind his powers. . . It almost felt like he was happy at the end. Unlike any of the others that John has smited before, there was no screaming, no cursing or pain. There were really only a small grunt of pain; I honestly want to believe that, even as the terror of his victims flowed through him, Jared still *enjoyed* it.
Translating from an animalistic to a human fear has had an interesting effect on the Flesh, similar to the hunt. Though I suppose the similarity should make sense considering they themselves are meant to be complimentary fears
This episode will always leave such an impression with me. The concept alone, a garden and flowers as analogies for different types of body disphoria, culmination tips ffs, and the description are so accurate and poetic. It all really drives home the point of the horror pf having a body but also the beauty that comes with it. Jaw is on the floor etc etc
Oh thank god, I was getting SO NERVOUS for the Flesh episode because I thought it'd be like overly meat-y or farm like with its sound effects. Not to say I'm comfortable with the... garden, but it's not what I expected!!! I also like how Jared immediately gets shut down with the jab boyfriend joke. Like a Total Dude Gym Bro (tm) REALLY doesn't know how to respond when his offensive joke gets responded to with genuinity.
I actually really like Jared, everyone is really upset when they get ceaseless watchered or Jon just says they’re gonna die. Jared just kinda says yeah and waters his bone plants I can’t with him he’s so cute
"To be wanted you must be less." Welp. This stopped being horror and now it's heart-wrenching social commentary. But it's spot on and I guess that's the whole horror of the situation.
Jared is that weird horror I kind of respect. Because he threatens John, wants to put off that he is intimidating but he just kind of shrugs and backs down after Martin asks him not to hurt John. That he has already left his mark. He knows John's going to kill him and he does what he always does and asks for a favor. He wants something from John before it happens. He wants to hear about his garden. And it's kind of sickening and sweet at the same time?
I listen to these while working out. Struck a little true In the best shape of my life but the more I work out, the more I see the flaws that just need me to push myself just a little harder to remove.
Ok it was at this episode that I fell asleep listening to it and I dreamed an ending to magnus archive that was a happy and victorious but depending on the comments I dont think it will be😢

My interpretation:
Gristlebloom orchide: bigorexia, need to grow bigger, references of gyms and the use of dehydration.
Bone rose: anorexia/bulimia, need to be 'less' and being 'in the bones'
Cutaway tulip: addiction to cosmetic procedures to be 'perfect' and to prevent 'ageing'
Lily of the damned: disability or chronic illness, your body betraying you and no chance to escape
@@hoominbeeing Yeah, I'm a bone rose myself :)
The garden feels reminiscent of Famine's restaurant in Good Omens (the book)
Also Alex voicing both Martin and Jared in this one is great.
you're right, it does. nice comparison
i thought of Famine's restaurant in that one statement, the letter to Gertrude from Adelard Decker. when he's talking about that sort of Fun Fair where when you win a prize it's a bone and everyone was trying to suck the marrow from it and stuff
omg you're right about the famine thing
YEAH IT DOES !! also i’m glad there’s more good omens fans here wooo
After an avatar of the flesh dies.
Martin: "So what now?"
John: "Carry on, I guess"
Is that a carrion pun?!
Ahhh, the beauty standards episode.
My meat man is just gardening why did they have to do him like this
fun fact, the song being whistled at the start is called "English Country Garden"
This episode is so good !! I keep imaging Jared in like a gardening outfit w gloves n everything (for his many hands)
little straw hats on all of his various lumps..... 1567 knee pads... stray femur sticking out that he hangs a lil basket on..... daisy-patterned apron... im DEAD
WeAreAirborne I must draw this immediately
@@lakejoseph6570 BRO if you do please link us
The gloves are made of meat.
He's wearing regency-era stays and one of those little milkmaid blouses with tracksuit bottoms and Adidas sneakers. I feel it.
When he started talking about how the rose must be kept under blinding light I just... they had to have consulted an actual dysmorphic for this one like that hits too close
Falling off my chair realising that Alex had to voice both Jared and Martin
okay its definitely starting to feel like the fears are sliding into each other, like the burning house had mentions of toxic and mold, last episode gave me serious stranger/spiral vibes and this one also mentions mold and corruption again. idk what that means but i sure noticed it
My guess is, the closer to The Penopticon they get, the less distinct the lines between the fears become. They start to blend together more and more as they approach the center of it all, as it were. But that’s just a theory at the moment. 😊
@@TheNitpickChick but that's just a theory! A TMA theory! ( I couldn't help myself sorry😔)
Well, remember that there aren't distinct boundaries for the Fears. There are bits where they blend and mix and create all these beautiful new horrors. Most of the statements this season are all Extinction flavoured as well.
I think that when the fears don't have to fight for dominance the distinctions matter less and less
NotThem's domain gave off Slaughter vibes, fearing that at any moment those around you will descend upon you and tear "you" apart
It is the worst place that has ever been beautiful, and it should not exist."
This episode has wonderful imagery, the unsettling description of the garden in such a beautiful and terryfing way, is amazing!
IT GETS ME EVERY TIME HE INTONES "ceaseless watcher" IT GETS ME EVERY TIME its simultaneously so cool and somewhat worrying
"And who's this? Your boyfriend?"
"Actually yes."
"Hm"
I will willingly sell my body to the Flesh just to see a full "Mortal Garden" plant encyclopedia.
The bone rose being the forced manifestation of disordered eating... poetic and so harsh in its truth
This reminds me of a short story i wrote when i was ten, about two raccoons who trap their hunter in a giant pit in the earth, bury him, and then use his decomposing body as fertilizer
.... was your ten year old self okay? 😭

This episode is..... creatively terrifying. And also Jon saying that Martin is his boyfriend just made my day.
I REALLY want to draw the flowers from this episode, but I doubt I could do them justice
Interesting, Jared didn't seem... to be hurt at all by what Jon did. I wonder why.
He's an avatar of meat. I guess getting butchered isn't that big of a deal for him.
Being butchered is his kink
@@emilybarclay8831 there are 2 types of people
I feel like Jared would enjoy feeling what he puts everyone else through
The idea with the flowers is so unsettling. Great mental picture
still not over the fact that Jared is voiced by Alex
also the mood and phrasing in this episode kind of reminds me of of Hannibal (the Tv series, naturally). Like ... I know it's awful and wrong and all that ... but it's still beautiful in a fascinating way
Take my like, good sir, for that Hannibal reference. You are absolutely right!
@@Ace_Up_My_Sleeve one of the best shows out there
@@jonahkaiser5876Preach! Two words: artistic corpses. Beautiful and amazing show.
Yeah ! Lots of Hannibal vibes ! Dr Lecter would be proud !
He would probably be a Flesh ruler too lol (and Will a Slaughter one ?)
@@macabrecitrus2127 I know this was 2 years ago, but Will could also very well be the Eye with all his understanding through empathy
I do like Jared Hopworth, he's got a air of fair play around him and has a sense of humour, seems almost trustworthy and I do love that voice Alex does for him + the accent, something something pun based around common saying relating to good bones/heart/organs and implying he has many to choose from
He somehow became my favorite character even before season 4 and was one of the motivators for me to make my Magnus archives OC I don't know why but I really like the meat man
Jared: Who's this, your boyfriend?
Jon: Yes actually :)
Jared:...
Jared: I'm not really sure where to go with that.
My face everytime that crunch/flesh noise happened:
................ ................
........0.... ........0..
.............................
The flesh made that noise as I was reading this and I made that exact same face
I have no idea what Jared said and at this point im too scared to ask
Muscle boi is very proud of his garden
Try looking up a transcript.
I like to think Jared is happily sitting there all :3 and taking notes listening to Jon while Martin stands beside utterly appalled lmao
the writing for the ed/body dysphoria plants is really well done. the lily of the damned is my favorite..
"spirituality, afterlife, transhumanism, religion. all must be roundly dismissed or mocked" ouch :(
Martin's "ooooohkay" when Jared got up makes me super want to see what was going on lol
The one time I don’t read the content warnings IS THE ONE TIME I REALLY REALLY FUCKINF SHOULD HAVE
I didn't see a body image episode coming when we got to the domain of The Flesh but by god it a) made sense and b) hit hard.
This episode is so friggin warped. It’s brilliant. Even the minor characters, the people groaning in the background, they really do sound like they’re being twisted into inhuman shapes. Also I heard somewhere that Alex does Jared’s voice without any effects added. Huh.
As a fan of both horror and gore, as well as a fan of morbid art, I love this episode. The prompts these create are amazing
Any time Jared shows up I have to turn on captions otherwise I can't understand a word he's saying :/
Jared's voice always creeps me out
Can’t believe he and Martin are the same person
I can't understand him very well tbh
I would love to see all the magnus archive episodes animated, the way that everything is described is increadible
3:25 for the iconic line
As someone who struggles with skin-picking and perfectionism, this was one of the few episodes that genuinely disturbed me.
me too dude. mine is more dysmorphia and it’s getting better but this episode hit different
The vile fact that I got an Arby's commercial before this
YAY!!!!!
WHY DID I BRIEFLY THINK THE TITLE SAID “ THE GENDER” ALDKFJJDJ
NO! NO GENDER!!!
Translating from an animalistic to a human fear has had an interesting effect on the Flesh, similar to the hunt. Though I suppose the similarity should make sense considering they themselves are meant to be complimentary fears
ooh this one definitely hurt but the way the imagery was described was just,, yeah wow
im just imagining jared key just sitting in a rocking chair made of bones while jon reads out human plant cultivation notes
I think this is officially my favourite episode of the Magnus archives ngl
This episode will always leave such an impression with me. The concept alone, a garden and flowers as analogies for different types of body disphoria, culmination tips ffs, and the description are so accurate and poetic. It all really drives home the point of the horror pf having a body but also the beauty that comes with it. Jaw is on the floor etc etc
Jared Hopworth would have made a great Sarkhic Priest
not big man jared growing a little garden in his post apocalyptic domain
In these episodes I really need the person that transcribes the audio, damn... Jared's so hard to understand sometimes
This is up there with The Piper as one of my favorite episodes.
well! i wasn’t expecting to be emotionally eviscerated by a meat flower today but yknow
Jared: Who's this, your boyfriend?
Jon: Yes, actually
Jared: Oh.
Oh hey! The Garden of my Insecurity! N e a t
Y A Y ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! !
and this is why you read warnings in the desc
"To be wanted you must be less."
Welp. This stopped being horror and now it's heart-wrenching social commentary. But it's spot on and I guess that's the whole horror of the situation.
something i just realized, all the people of influence marked by the powers that be, basically have their own corrupted versions of the Kekkei Genkai.
What a terrible day to have a mind's eye
it's been almost a month since i listened to this episode and i still can't stop thinking about it
Cottagecore more like CottageGore
I just gotta say, I thought the Flesh would be another gross episode, I'm glad it's not.
“Who is this? Your boyfriend?”
“Yes actually”
“Oh”
“your boyfriend?”
“uh-“
“yes, actually…”
“…oh”
Jared is that weird horror I kind of respect.
Because he threatens John, wants to put off that he is intimidating but he just kind of shrugs and backs down after Martin asks him not to hurt John. That he has already left his mark. He knows John's going to kill him and he does what he always does and asks for a favor. He wants something from John before it happens. He wants to hear about his garden. And it's kind of sickening and sweet at the same time?
I have to admit, I didn't expect Jared to do cottage core but here we are.
Can't blame him, cottage core is nice.
Out of everything in this series I’m honestly fine with this one, i wanna be a pretty flower
I'd love Jonathan to explain the theories about The Nether in Minecraft.
I listen to these while working out.
Struck a little true
In the best shape of my life but the more I work out, the more I see the flaws that just need me to push myself just a little harder to remove.
Ok it was at this episode that I fell asleep listening to it and I dreamed an ending to magnus archive that was a happy and victorious but depending on the comments I dont think it will be😢
I love Jared's voice effect and bodily creaking.
I would like to say - if apocalypse flowers work on a basis" as long as you are doing everything wrong, it would work" i would be an awesome gardener
