Dear Kristine, you need to use a burner when you cut the cord unless you are a mistress of using a lighter you can be a bit clunky ! Beadsmith and Beadalon make one it has a small element at the end and melts through the thread very accurately like butter then you tap the end with your finger and it seals. Hope this helps. Indeed you can use other kind of beads and they look equally as fine. I used what is like a kind of Sweetie bead made by preciosa the other week it is a circular little chap more mushroom shaped with the threadable bit in the 'pinch' under the mushroom. You could even use Shanked buttons. Just make sure you do more flat knotting inbetween the KISS. Have fun Kleshx
