I got a digital library card from my local library and I use Libby. Sometimes you have to wait for certain books but it's free and it has audiobooks so I listen while cooking, cleaning etc.
As I earned more money, I spent some of it on more luxurious clothing. What I can say is that luxury items don't necessarily last longer than your average high or low street item IF YOU WEAR IT A LOT. Wear and care will affect the state of your clothing even if you are super careful about washing and maintaining them.
Amen to not drinking much! In normal times I'm an Irish musician and many sessions have free beer, so I'll have a couple of pints here and there, but I haven't paid for beer in years. Not buying alcohol for myself has definitely saved me a ton of money.
I'm also not buying books this year. I have so many already on my shelves that are sitting unread, and have no business trying to add more to that. My one exception to not purchasing luxury haircare is a deep conditioner/hair mask. I do feel like high-end brands are just better for my wavy/curly hair. And I'm going to be transitioning to a safety razor this year. I get horrible razor burn and the more I read, the more I'm realizing that it's this belief that more blades are better that's causing all my issues. I'm going to use up the cartridges I have, and then hopefully look into a razor from Oui the People. They're crazy expensive, but I love the idea of supporting a Black-owned brand that was created solely to create shaving tools for people with sensitive skin.
You actually raise a great point. My experience has also shown me that some hair masks are worth the extra money. Ultimately though your opinion is the one that matters and spending in areas you find valuable. I'm so excited for you! I hope you enjoy safety razors and supporting a black owned brand also sounds like a lovely Idea!
It isn't really going to kill anything. It just suficates the eggs until you are ready to remove them so they don't hatch and then it keeps it from breaking apart and spilling baby spiders when it is taken down.
Hey Shawna, I dont know if you will see this msg and I'm not usually the one to comment on videos, but I want to say a big thanks you this is one of the best videos I've seen on UA-cam and am so glad I've found your channel. you went into length and details and I appreciate. I'm on this journey myself I've always been responsible and frugal so I thought but I got sucked 2years ago into the UA-cam rabbit hauls lol my thing is makeup even though I look for dupes and drugstore I found myself overwhelmed by the quantity of things I own.ive always been able to work with little all my life but I just dont know how and when it all started and..... here I am. Is not even a small portion of some other people I see but FOR ME its a LOT. sorry for making this long I just wanted to encourage you and say thanks again TOU ARE REALLY HELPING ME OUT. I'm sure I speak for many. take care xx
You are BO$$ level for giving up alcohol!! It know how difficult it is as alcohol is super addictive but I managed it too and its so worth it for the health and skin benefits. Diabetes and weight gain run in my family and alcohol is a major contributor to both as it is full of carbs. I like your "NO SHAME in cutting down expenses", for years I felt I had to make excuses when its simply my choice like any other🤪 For handwash items I have a front loading machine (this is WAY less harsh on clothes and saves on water and laundry detergent, so you save money even if the initial cost is more) each in a delicate laundry bag on the quick cycle (so there is less rubbing between items). I also add my viscose tshirts to the same handwash only items, all inside out. I find cheap viscose pill in a regular wash but in this wash they don't pill so stay looking look new for months. The only negative with front loaders they can take longer to wash but if you have one with a time delay you can set to overnight to finish in the morning so I got around that. Hmm, I think my weakness is home fragrance, I am looking to cut down on that. Also GOOD LUCK 🍀🍀🍀 to progressing to $10 000 this year! 🍀🍀🍀
Your examples are always so thoughtful! Books are such a money and space eater for me, too. I have at least 10 untouched for years. During the shutdowns, I switched to Project Gutenberg/Librivox books on my phone and kinda prefer the convenience of digital now. Too bad shows and games don't have an amazing several-thousand-year out-of-copyright backlog like that...entertainment would be free.
I'm glad you liked the examples! Yes, some things just eat away space or add clutter and reducing that can be as important as saving money. It's great you found some electronic resources that work for you too! 😊
I used to get magazines but ai realized that I was putting them on my desk and not reading them for fun. I felt obligated to read them because they were there...so it felt more like a chore to get through. Most of the ones that I had were free subscriptions but they were another thing in my house that I had to pass along after I was done with. As far as hair care..I started buying the Sally Beauty generic versions and they are fantastic and very inexpensive.
I’m a new subscriber and enjoying your videos! I wanted to find that book you said was a favorite now. You said “Blind Date with a Book” but I can only find “Blind Date with a Book Boyfriend” was that the one? Thanks! 😊
Items I am working on not buying because I don't need...I am working on my shopping addiction...socks, black pants, black flat shoes, black ankle boots, house slippers, pajamas, hair scrunchies, body spray...now items I will finally let run out before I buy...Hand soap, bar soap, body soap, decorative napkins...
I have fallen for really popular, expensive hair, makeup and beauty products. I have rarely been pleased. Only one product I raved was estee lauder foundation. The nails thing, how do you get good at doing them nice yourself as they end costing me a lot of time and money x
I loved the idea of a cookbook or cooking magazine, but all too frequently they end up in a pile of stuff that I never consulted. Some of our desire to spend money comes from wanting to fix a system and hoping throwing money at the issue will solve it. On accident, I stumbled across the app Whisk after several unsuccessful attempts to meal plan and prep using all sorts of systems (Pinterests, cookbooks, trello boards, I've done it all). It's a free app with a grocery list and meal planner in it. I've gotten the most "bang for my buck" out of this free app than all of the beautiful glossy cookbooks on my shelf. I love the idea of cookbooks but apparently not the system for me! Your lip color is beautiful on you, btw. Is it a gloss and a liner? Or just a lipstick? I've started going more into just doing a liner with a similarly tinted gloss (shout out Tower 28) and damn it makes the lips pop.
Ok that app sounds amazing and I'm so glad you mentioned it! I feel a bit like you where I have best intentions and the don't follow through because its the planning and finding the best method to plan and that whole thing so thank you 👍👍👍👍👍👍👍 I am a huge fan of the lipgloss/liner combo especially tower 28! Im wearing my colourpop fairy floss gloss over my bite multistick in cashew.
Absolutely! I am always shouting out Whisk because it has everything you need in one app including recipe look up. The communities are great too. I'm about a month into using it and I've already got some meals that are staple go-tos. As it stands, it's free and doesn't have any freemium type upgrades but honestly I'd pay for an app that does this much. Finding the right method has been killer and this seems to be the thing that's done it! Woot! That combo is so pretty and perfect on you! Thanks for being inspo to not ditch any of my lip liners when decluttering. As much as I love the idea of a matte lip, I honestly just don't think it's my thing and I'm kind of glad beauty is moving away from it and to a glossy look. The discomfort of the drying and peeling even in the highest quality mattes is too much for me to handle. I read somewhere that matte lip products can give the illusion your lips are smaller than they are. No HECKIN thanks!
@@Alex-rx1ni I downloaded it and am stoked to try it! Thanks so much! I'm glad you found a combo that works for you. I'm also happy we're letting the matte lips go! I still have a few lip products that are on the matte side like the multi stick. Pair it with a gloss and it's just perfect!
Some of your items sound quite restrictive and with no much savings potential... this stroke me when you commented about gourmet food ingredients. I think some items are worth the luxury, because they last very long, you can enjoy cooking, and have the potential of preventing you from caving a dinner out, for example. Have you ever seen The Financial Diet channel? They discuss extensively on budget cuts to make, but also which items are not worth cutting from your budget.
Hi Cynthia, the items I mentioned work for me and I ultimately hope this video is a form of inspiration and not a rigid set of rules "everyone" must or should follow. For me personally, gourmet sauces and spices were a waste of my money because I rarely used them or liked them and was drawn in to a new item because i just wanted to try something new. I already had/have staples that I use and love. I do watch TFD and they have a lot of good advice. It sounds like gourmet food ingredients and potentially others in this video don't work for you and thats ok. I'm glad you've found things that work for your budget/lifestyle.
Yessssss! Support local libraries! A lot of libraries also have Overdrive which allows ebook and audiobook rentals.
Yes! There are many ways to get resources even if a local library is physically closed.
I just realized that Overdrive syncs with your Kindle account which means you can read ebooks natively on your e-reader. I had no idea and I'm shook!

I always keep a can of hairspray. But, I rarely use it for my hair. It does well for dealing with spider nests and is cheaper than raid.
Hmm I never knew that ! What a clever idea

Liking this concept a lot some really good points. Stay safe and warm 😊

Sounds like you've made some good swaps!
I rarely drink hard liquor, but wine 🍷 I love it! I’m trying to cut down because of how expensive it gets. 😐
I wanted the bath and body works leaves candle so bad 10 years ago! I am trying to not buy to many expensive candles as well.
A few years ago I was truly obsessed with that scent!! And scented candles can really be expensive!

The blind date with a book was actually an event my library held! So sorry that wasn't clear
Wow! 🙌🏻 you look stunning in this red sweater, Shawna))) 🔥😍😍😍
Thanks so much Dina!
We have some of the same items! Loved this video.
Thank you! Glad you enjoyed 😊
Micellar water definitely got more more hype than it deserved, like its just overpriced soapy water
Totally agree 👍
So glad I never bought that item. I kept hearing about it but was like.. Meh🤷🏻♀️ Sounded unnecessary
