DJI tech is really cool but all the restrictions and everything being tied to a online account is just too much for me. My only DJI is an old mavic mini 2 that I managed to find used with an old firmware version that still allows you to disable the stupid aeroscope/droneid signal. It's also only used with a tablet that doesn't have internet access at that time just in case it tries to pull an auto update for whatever reason. The original mavics are also pretty cool with all the custom firmware modding you can do to them. Sadly they are now too expensive on the used market in my country to justify buying one just to mess around with it unless you get very lucky. Apparently drone-hacks also offers a custom firmware for the mavic 3 that removes all flight restrictions and disables aeroscope which might be something to consider in a few years when they drop in price.
I have quite a few old DJI models from a brand new unflown in the box Phantom 1 the very first one that came with no camera or gimbal , A Phantom 3 Pro , P4 and P4 Pro with screen remote and spare remote with no screen , and even more models from DJI , GoPro Karma , Parrot , Yuneec , they are all virtually worthless here in the UK , pity as they were all good drones in their time .
Yes, within EASA all drones must have some kind of geo fencing built into their firmware. Otherwise they won't be allowed to be sold within EASA countries.
Took mine on vacation. Had fun with it. DJI does have massive restrictions. I live right by an airport, hospital and some industrial areas. That's why I have other brands also. lol
well.. in tis case, apparently this drone is not covered by drone regulations if you not using a controller.... so it is dji that chose to geo fence it
what is the definition, so for example, i dont need a flyer id, or a phone to fly as kite, and the kite is not required to have tracking electronics to be sold.
I think it's more that they can just use the same software stack for this drone as they use for their other products. So I still think the Government regulation still have a strong effect.
Ha ha, that's not the only catch. I went to fly my drone off grid once, and it was logged out of my account for some reason. It came up with an error message saying altitude was limited to 15M which wasn't enough to clear the canopy so I could film what I wanted. Luckily I got a slight bit of phone service to hotspot to the controller, enough to log it back in, and gain full functionality back. It is a mini 3 pro. Now days I always test my drone before leaving home, and or phone service to make sure its still logged in, its a bloody joke.
And whose fault is that. After 43 years as a pilot and a dozen flying RC’s and drones; I am amazed at people that do not take the time to learn the most basic Air Space Rules that EVERYBODY should know before they use the airspace.
I remember seeing a video a while back about a film shoot where the director had all the staff on location and when it came time to start filming he discovered that his two high end DJI drones would not operate until firmware updates had been completed. So, the whole crew just had to wait. He was not impressed since the shoot depended on lighting (time of day, etc.) and he risked losing the whole day and the associated costs were quite significant. He was less than complimentary about DJI......
@@alasdair4161 Right... DJI times their updates to interfere with every professional shoot... Got it. I shoot professionally and have NEVER had to update while on set. I check for updates while I'm checking my equipment BEFORE I head to a gig. I don't go to a job without inspecting all of my equipment ESPECIALLY if it's "time sensitive". I guess that's just me though. Besides, last I checked, I've pretty much have never been FORCED to do an update by DJI. At least I can't remember being forced to do one... Hmmm... I'm pretty sure you can ignore them if you're flying.
@@airheadbit1984 Honestly, I think that if you're out flying your drone, you can ignore the update notification. I don't think the system forces you to update before you're "allowed" to fly your drone. I don't think your drone will "force land" if an update comes up while you're flying it. My point is that the "professional" could have gone ahead and done his shoot and updated his drones later. You know?
In 2016 I bought my 1st DJI Drone... A P4P+... After reading the way DJI was trying to limit the functionality of my Drone with Feature Updates that included those limits... I decided NOT to Update the firmware ever. My P4P+ works as well today as it did when I bought it with the functions I originally paid for. Did the same thing with my Mavic Pro. No problems at all.
It can be used as a toy drone, but since it also can fly up to 10km theoretically if you purchase the controller. It makes sense to not let people fly it near airports. As far as the frustrations you had activating it, yeah that sucks. Maybe it was just an oversight in their app design, or maybe just another layer of security to ensure your location or identity. But the fact is, your choice to use an old low tech mobile phone but wanting to use new tech drones is a real rarity that they probably never thought would happen. When you choose to be a unique snowflake, sometimes it comes with irritating consequences.
the drone would know a controller is connected right ? and bruce made a good point that you dont get cell coverage everywhere... the whole point was.. this is why you may not want to buy it. im sure he will tell us what he likes about it too.
Requiring a phone at all is just bad design. Too much crap is tied to having a cell phone now a days, things that have no actual need for that phone. For instance, even though I pay for a family plan for Spotify, my younger children can't use it with their Google mini devices because they require you to have a phone per user. Why? No need for that. Why should a drone require you to "activate" it at all? It should just turn on and work. Anything more is just pure 🐮 💩.
I'm sure its geo fenced for when people fly it with one of the several controllers it can be connected to. I've seen the Neo flown as far as 2.5 kilometers away from the pilot. Too bad they couldn't make it where the geo fencing was disabled while using as advertised without a remote or controlled by smartphone. I think DJI is walking on eggshells right now due to all the paranoia happening around the world. Great video. Very informative.
Yeah, geofence it when you're using a controller if you must but when it's in its autonomous or wifi mode it can't go far or high enough to cause a threat to any manned aviation so why bother -- it just massively inconveniences the user.
We don’t have the geofence problem here in the UK. We accept responsibility for the flight within certain areas. Used to have to unlock FRZ’s and show such permissions to the Flysafe website, but not now. DJI place the onus on the owner to seek permission, not to show such permission. Blame the NZ CAA rules Bruce. 😉😉
It's not CAA causing the problem -- it's DJI saying "NO" even when a flight would be totally legal under CAA's regs. Also, I gather that geofencing is still in effect for some areas in the UK (prisons, etc).
@@xjet Yes certain areas ( prisons mostly) are off limits where permission has to be sought and proof given to Flysafe to get them to unlock that area. Most other limited areas simply ask the operator to accept the risk ( a simple touch on the screen and you’re good to go) I don’t know the situation in NZ, but do know if I want to fly in the EU, I have to unlock certain areas via the Flysafe website, before my drone will take off. Possibly something similar in NZ ? Of course I wouldn’t fly in an FRZ without permission beforehand. 😉😉
New Zealand always paying the biggest prices while getting the shortest end of the stick. It's no wonder they're always stomping around doing that angry-face dance. I would too. Then again DJI may well have feared the CAA wouldn't follow their own reg's and went a couple of steps beyond. Or can one assume they might have called and asked? For its size NZ is a hotbed of FPV and they must have known Bruce's critique was coming.
I tested out a Neo for a friend. Had to accept resonsibility for the flight as stated above same as UK. My flight location was with in three city blocks of a heliport at a hospital. That being said I did not try to fly any higher than 25 feet over my own house.
There are lots of things in society which come with conditions but we comply with them voluntarily if we want what they are offering. Like probably 99% of people I watched a beginner tutorial before I purchased and therefore knew it required a smart phone to activate. No one forced me or you to buy the drone and yet you did even though you in all likelihood knew you would need a smart phone to activate it. I have been making my own drones back to the days when I was building tricopters out of wood and a Naze32 board. More recently I am mostly just using DJI products because they are superior in almost every way to something I could make myself. I will happily comply with their conditions because I want to use there products, conversely if I didn't want to comply I wouldn't buy their products, it's pretty simply. Obviously from an operational point of view the majority of people are happy to activate their drone on a smartphone which I would suggest 99.9% of your audience use.
no dji drone is superior for freestyle acro or racing..... their flying cameras that for the most part do the flying while you concentrate on the video.
Wait until you get out to the field and the app has forgotten your log in. There's no integration of password managers or anything and it doesn't support the keyboard I use. I stand outside missing what i want to film while I'm waiting for an email to change my password
I have a big fishing drone that a friend didn't know how to operate. He is 80 and not tech savvy. it will lift 7kg. He found out I build and fly rc planes so gave it to me to use. It is scary as heck. Massive carbon props. Look out Papamoa.
It's just one symptom of the horrible direction manufacturers have gone: the subscription model for things you "bought" and "own". Didn't pay your recurring fee? Your electric seats get turned off. Or maybe your sunroof or the radio. Or maybe your doorbell stops working or you can't even get into your house. It's going to get worse.
When you think that 80% of the population fell for the plandemic, and 60% can’t be bothered to vote, are you really surprised by any of the restrictions!😊
@@w.e.s. this is why im still building drones, some of these old flight controllers may be valuable in the future, thats my excuse and im sticking to it :)
Sorry to hear you're having problems with activation. My NEO had already been activated via a my old iPhone xr, but when I got the Goggles N3, and fpv controller I was able to activate both using my PC and DJI Assistant 2 .
they make some great products, i feel like their a victim of their own success, we didn't a problem where we have drones crashing in places they shouldn't be before dji sold a drone a child could fly 3 miles above the clouds.

I believe in advanced settings, there is an option to unlock geo zone. I'm not sure if it available without the remote or it is possible to do while using phone only.
A bit of an overreaction. I'd say it's just DJI protecting itself. Having said that, I live near an airport and have a Neo. All you have to do is just acknowledge in the app when the warning pops up that you are aware of the risk and take responsibility.
I recently set my Neo to follow me on a trail ride through a section of woods adjacent to RAF Woodvale in Formby and it obediently followed for over a mile through the woods at one point no more than 200yards from airdromes fence. Back in 2021 I was asked to film a Triathlon swim section on the beach the other side of the same woods a lot further from the same airdrome using a mavic air and was Geo locked from flying which is what I expected with Neo but no it worked fine.
I really like your wise and thoughtful opinions, the world needs more people like you. When you talked about activating the drone via smartphone, it reminded me of the two-factor authentication of many banks today. It is almost the same, often you need a smartphone to use those accounts. Obviously they forgot about the customers who cannot use a smartphone or do not have a smartphone - and there are also people who do not want a smartphone. Security is very important, but you should always offer alternatives for a reason. I am a person who is very interested in all kinds of technology, but I have come to believe that many technological developments that are touted as innovations are really designed to control the customer. Loosely based on Tolkin: "One ring to rule them all, one ring to find them, one ring to bring them all and bind them in darkness..."
A man after my own heart. Started in the 80's with Wyse terminals and mainframes with FTC. Absolutely hate 'smart' phones. I have one as I need to be accessible to family and ex clients. I looked at a Neo - and took it back when it would not work with my phone or any of my relatives phones except high-end crap. Too be fair, I only wanted the Neo for follow-along on my MTB for some stuff to post for friends.
Mine works great. Easy set up. Flies everywhere. Handing them out like candy this Christmas. Probably the best way to learn FPV Manual with little risk.
Having gone through the registration process and disliking 'smart' phones, I'm completely with you on that. Regarding flight restrictions, you're wrong. The CAA or equivalent in your country cannot make exceptions to their flight rules to accommodate every minor variation. Nothing to do with DJI, just accept it as a restriction and go elsewhere.
I looked at the DJI Neo also Bruce. But now, after some research and your video included I've decided to buy a CADDX GoFilm20 and the Caddx FPV goggles. It's a little more expensive but from all of the reviews on YT everyone seems impressed with all facets of its performance. Cash in your NEO and come to the dark side.
DJI has it like this so that people will keep the dji app on the phone that they constantly use. You have to have both cellular and wifi connection to do the updates as well.
I can totally understand DJI for their safety especially here in the USA, because our government, some senators every single year push to ban DJI drones. Every year. That drone, or should I say toy shouldn't have geo fence, or any kind of restrictions really. If it doesn't fly like a drone, then it's not a drone. Why treat it like a drone. I honestly thought they were to be flown indoors. For kid's to play around on a rainy day, really. I have DJI drones, the air 2, and air 2S. Yeah, they're old but they still fly like they supposed to. I wouldn't buy that neo not even for my grandson. I have my reasons, but yeah. Thanks for sharing and the honest review. Happy holidays to you, and your loved ones. 👍👍👍
Bloody nanny state bs, trying to save everyone, but from what!? . It's getting very very tiresome in many areas... Thanks for continuing to fight, Bruce
I've had a Neo for a few weeks now. I enjoy using it and people see me being followed by it are also impressed, so much so that they decide to get one. The only problem I have with it is me. I like flying it, but hate video editing. I record something and maybe a month or more later I might have a decent video created. I doubt I could ever have a decent youtube channel because of this. I have a Mini 2 as well. They complement each other as I use the Mini2 in windier weather and longer distances.
This video shows me I have an awful lot more research to do before I splurge on a drone. I really want one to film the backcountry I visit, and around the farm. But I have very little cell coverage on the farm, and run a very basic phone. So I'm stuffed if I buy one of their products. Thanks Bruce for uncovering the insidious side of some of the big players.
Instead of banging on about the C.A.R.s, why don't you contact DJI directly? It seems anything else is just pissing in the wind, and then complaining that you're getting wet.
I love my DJI neo, it’s a brilliant technological marvel lol. Sorry that you don’t have a regular smart phone bruce. With a smart phone you can fly it for a bit of a distance using their app. It also links up to my goggles and my new controller for my air 3s and the motion controller that I got with my avata 2. Yeah I know I’m hooked on their products, but they are actually brilliant. I also love the neo because it can get into some very tight places that my avata 2 can’t. You do have a point though with the fact that DJI does restrict the use of their drones near airports and helipads. Luckily for me I’m not that close to those. Once again bruce your Spence of humour saves you from going mad, and makes for great content.
i also hate to admit that i own many dji products (only 1 drone... the fpv, many goggles, air units, vistas etc) can you not use the trick i use on my non firmware updated fpv? basically i just let it boot, connect to video and control while being inside or something similar to block the GPS? if the fpv cant find gps before the props start spinning, it will allow you to take off. once hovering, going to the goggles and selecting update home point then allows full operation even when near airports etc. i mean, what is the drone going to do? shut off while already flying? not for the fpv anyway. you just clear the warnings and fly. (btw, yes i follow regulations,RID, airspace etc rules) this is just something i stumbled across by accident actually.
FYI. I TOO have a cellphone that is used as a Voice-caller only. I have NO DATA PLAN! It was a nightmare to get my NEO activated. Fortunately, I have OTHER DJI products such as the RC2 that came with my mini 4 pro and since that device uses my Wifi on my LAN I WAS able to activate my NEO through the RC2 controller. NOT A FIX for ppl who only bought the NEO and it's the only DJI product they own. This needs to be fixed ASAP! DJI! What were you thinking? Anyway. Hope that helps others who, like me, may own the RC2!
Hey Bruce, I have a perhaps a bright counter point to your difficulties.. and that is, the customer base for DJI products. You know that the idiots who do fly near airports are not the kind of folk who build their own drones like us.. it is the 'Straight out of the shop, switch it on, and go watch some airliners land' crowd who have been the excuse for authorities to regulate the crap out of the skies. So all the geofence nonsense really is a blessing in disguise for keeping those wombles at bay... whilst we can build our own craft and be free to operate sensibly but with freedom.
DJI is also trying to preemptively cover their rear ends from the big G hype regulators, not that it'll do them any good in the long run. Regulators don't typically bother caring about anyone who follows the rules and they get brushed away with whatever political or financial interests are popular.
Daang, I had 6 of these in my cart, and I was likely going to pay double, to show my appreciation for modern DJI technology.. But NOT ANYMORE!!! good going DJI.
Here in Aus every hospital has a heli pad so if I was to buy one I could not even fly it at my local flying field. Nice work DJI. An another thing why do I need to get a new controller every time you release a new drone. Not buying your products anymore.
yes, i was quite excited about the neo, i have the fpv combo, with goggles v2, controller, and motion controller, i just wanted something smaller, sub 250, but no, my googles, controller and motion controller wont work... im not buying it
Couldn’t agree more. They’re adding to the rules of the area. I can’t even test mine in my house because I’m in class D air space in the States. I have a part 107 (US commercial) license. So I’m going to build my first drone as soon as I can afford it. Take care!!!
building drones is fun, the only time i would recommend a dji would be if you wanted a camera drone for filming, they are not good for learning to fly, racing, or freestyle acro. and no geofencing.
@ I bought it originally to add as photography equipment. But now I’d like to enjoy the fvp aspect of the hobby. Dji sucks and I’d also like to be able to say I built that. 👍🏻👍🏻
I bought a DJI drone once, and I will never again. What a horrible UX. I get where they come from being a huge company needing to play nice with governments, but thanks, not for me. I still buy o3 air units from time to time, and even those, for whatever reason, need to be activated before use. Go figure.
Small thing? Nope, that's not disclosing required equipment for use. Sent it back! Alternatively, can you toss your barphone SIM into the Android tablet as a one-off? As for CAA regs & DJI - pack of numpties!
Thanks for being point man on the DJI Nano purchase, I can now scratch it of my Christmas list; far too much Big Brother and not enough Santa for my liking
Autel robotics drones are far better, plus if you dont know DJI constantly sends videos and photos of what your doing to themselves which is why it needs a cell connection.
i left the hobby...... why ? because my understanding was " Remote ID" required a cellular phone that needed to be connected to the internet. Is this true ?
Early on DJI required you to have a smartphone connected to your goggles for the Avata but it didn't need to have an internet connection. It simply used the GPS on the smartphone so it could broadcast the pilot's position in compliance with the RID rule.
if you build a drone you wont have any of these issues, in the uk, i have flown the dji fpv without connecting my phone, fairly sure i've flown a mavic without a phone connected too. theirs not much point connecting the phone if your using the googles, you cant see it, and is another device using battery power...
Get an Insta360 X4 and a 3m invisible selfie stick? (More expensive and probably silly money in NZ?) but no geofencing can pan/crop in post so don’t even need to ‘point it’. I know that’s not really an option I’m sad the Neo is no good for you though, does look like a nice bit of tech, I won’t be adding one to my growing drone collection.
Hey Bruce, you think DJI is bad - wait till you find how that you can't operate your Australian government without a smartphone and on top of that the features aren't at all as described!
Hmm I think maybe you can cancel all those restrictions if you connect to a phone. DJI requires it for like RID, like you have to plug your dji fpv goggles in before you can even take off.
I agree with you! For the price, it is great! And if you want a clip, don't need goggles, don't need remote... you can use it by itself of even phone (ok ok, i understand not in your case :P)!
My smartphone (without SIM) works fine for controlling the drone -- it was just the "activation" process that was the problem. Mind you, I think they use the word "control" rather loosely. You don't get much in the way of control with a phone -- it barely moves in response to control inputs.
My advice is if you are going to NZ take an FPV drone as the DJI ones will hardly be able to be flown. It is the most over regulated (drone )country in the world.
You are not wrong. You can't fly *anywhere* without the permission of the owner of the property you'll be flying over. Aside from a few areas where permission is granted automatically, that makes the entire country effectively a no-fly zone. As I say, the regulations here are a decade behind the times. They were drafted when regulators feared drones and figured they were all too dangerous to allow their use anywhere but under very controlled circumstances. It's an embarrassment to us now.
Wait, control line model aircraft? So something attached to the ground with a human pivot? Yet there are no regulations for kite photography, (in the UK anyway) apart from if you want to go over 60 mtrs with a camera on board.
I stopped buying drones and quads after I got a DJI Mavic Mini. It works well, well enough that I don't think I need anything else in the way of a flying camera. The only problem I have with that is the idiotic price of spare batteries. Around AU$90 for a spare battery? Stuff that. Anyway, I've just about run out of space on the ceiling for hanging choppers and quads. Even I reckon I have too many, most of which I don't fly any more and only two of which are "drones".
Dibs on having DJI drones that didn't need activation, didn't have geofencing.....I can fly mine over an ammo depo, airport, military base..... I say I can, thing is you should always be sensible and with "a grain of mind" and not break the law or cause an accident...... But if I want to see if my drone is stable and works at 1 meter altitude, it's my right, specially if it is in my backyard.... No matter if I am in range of anything..... What if I am a soldier and in the break I want to fpv for some minutes, or am a certified fighter pilot, or helly pilot, or any silly exceotion.....Because DJI didn't say that it will take my money in only certain cases.
There's process where you can call the authority at the airport and ask if they would grant you an exemption and then JDI can unlock you for up to a year at a time. Still very frustrating especially if the geofencing is magnitudes more strict than the actual regulations.
Just cancelled after seeing this video and got two mates and my brother in-law to cancel, as we wont be able to use them here. I second that about the T-shirt. Also, I'm most interested in the phone you use. I to want just a "phone" what brand is it? Thanks for sharing chap and love ya work.
It's a MobiWire brand -- cost NZ$29 (about US$16) but it's not really very good. I had to print a 3D keypad guard because the keyboard lock doesn't stop it dialling the emergency number if its in your pocket. I may invest in a Nokia -- they're still around apparently. As for the Neo, if you don't mind the "activation" process and don't live next to an airport or helipad they're a great little drone.
I purchased a second one in China with the dong and goggles. Forgot it needed activation by still enough in the bubble I flew in. Once I'd figured out the activation, I had a great time zooming about the hotel carpark. The culture there is very permissive regarding drones except near anything you're not meant to see. The people who asked were curious rather than Karens. Gave a couple of kids their first ever drone flights - I think we have converts! Now, if only i can get that FPV3 controller working too.
I forgot to say: very china attitude that everyone has a smartphone and products phoning home is usual to them. Heck, many people take their phone and no wallet when they go out and privacy just isn't a thing for them. Having handrails built into their apps is also part of the culture. I know that mindset doesn't translate well to the west though. Well, maybe not for another generation or two.
Not so much DJI me thinks as the powers that be who would like to take DJI out of the market with insane rules. You know Xjet , it's almost like you may be getting old 😅. Same here.
Exactly why I don’t buy their Drone products. Take it back and say it won’t activate, I want my money back. Nice T-shirt Bruce.

Besides, last I checked, I've pretty much have never been FORCED to do an update by DJI. At least I can't remember being forced to do one... Hmmm... I'm pretty sure you can ignore them if you're flying.
@@londenard LMAO "I'm pretty sure you can ignore them if you're flying"
When you choose to be a unique snowflake, sometimes it comes with irritating consequences.
exactly. and he could have said this in 1 minute instead of whining about it for 11. Snowflake indeed.
the drone would know a controller is connected right ? and bruce made a good point that you dont get cell coverage everywhere...
the whole point was.. this is why you may not want to buy it. im sure he will tell us what he likes about it too.
That being said I did not try to fly any higher than 25 feet over my own house.
im fairly sure we cant take off at airports, am i wrong ?
It's why old stuff is getting expensive people have had enough of it. We can't l9ve like this anymore nobody can afford to
When you think that 80% of the population fell for the plandemic, and 60% can’t be bothered to vote, are you really surprised by any of the restrictions!😊
@@w.e.s. this is why im still building drones, some of these old flight controllers may be valuable in the future, thats my excuse and im sticking to it :)
Sorry to hear you're having problems with activation. My NEO had already been activated via a my old iPhone xr, but when I got the Goggles N3, and fpv controller I was able to activate both using my PC and DJI Assistant 2 .
I wouldn't touch a DJI related product with a barge-pole. Love to hear from you, as always, Bruce.
they make some great products, i feel like their a victim of their own success, we didn't a problem where we have drones crashing in places they shouldn't be before dji sold a drone a child could fly 3 miles above the clouds.
@@fpvrc9829 realy great yes. A CCCP Controlled Company that installs an Backdoor on YOUR Phone, they had to pull that app from GooglePlay because they didnt wanted to change that. Higly trustworhy, NO Problems at all. Sarcasm Off
I believe in advanced settings, there is an option to unlock geo zone.
It depends exactly how close you are to the airport/helipad whether it actually forbids you or simply asks you to accept responsibility.
@@xjet true, and if it's a Military airbase, you're not lifting off at all.
I ended up buying a potensic atom. I heard you can bypass the protocols.
😂😂😂 love my neo, DJI is the best
As I said... a great drone, just lousy policies on the part of DJI.
Thanks for the heads-up .. was thinking about this one and now have a bit more to think about.
Ah now there is an honest review I need, The Pocket 3. I have been thinking about upgrading from the Pocket 2.
Such a shame! But isn't the packaging nice!!!
Good job Xjet ❤😉🙃😎
Do New Zealanders ever stop whinging about small stuff? Christ almighty.
I'd like to complain about your comment hahaha!
Biggest moaners ever all narcissistic nutcases what is this idiot on about it's a revolution first drone follows good
I can totally understand DJI for their safety especially here in the USA, because our government, some senators every single year push to ban DJI drones.
Excellent honest video, was about to get one , not anymore, let the hackers reverse engineer the firmware ,, only a matter of time.
Idk.. I own 6 drones. I love the Neo for what is.. my quick follow me drone.
I also love my little Neo I own 4 drones Mavic mini, Mini 2, Mini 4 pro & the Neo.
I still fly my Hubsan h501s . Still rock solid!
Bloody nanny state bs, trying to save everyone, but from what!? . It's getting very very tiresome in many areas... Thanks for continuing to fight, Bruce
"Fight"? He gave them money! Exactly how is DJI losing in this scenario?
I've had a Neo for a few weeks now. I enjoy using it and people see me being followed by it are also impressed, so much so that they decide to get one. The only problem I have with it is me. I like flying it, but hate video editing. I record something and maybe a month or more later I might have a decent video created. I doubt I could ever have a decent youtube channel because of this.
I have a Mini 2 as well. They complement each other as I use the Mini2 in windier weather and longer distances.
Any other firmware available for re-flashing & jailbreaking the Neo yet?
give it time to circulate :) im fairly sure someone has done it
This video shows me I have an awful lot more research to do before I splurge on a drone. I really want one to film the backcountry I visit, and around the farm. But I have very little cell coverage on the farm, and run a very basic phone. So I'm stuffed if I buy one of their products. Thanks Bruce for uncovering the insidious side of some of the big players.
you can activate somewhere you do have coverage. once its activated it can fly without a phone
Cable teather the phone to your laptop and use the Internet that way ?
You come off as wholly credible. Thats unique.
That is why I avoid any product from DJI. They treat their customers like idiots.
The Neo is NZ$ 336 at Noel Leeming. That's 193 USD. So it's actually slightly cheaper than in most "overseas" places (where it's typically 199 USD).
i also hate to admit that i own many dji products (only 1 drone... the fpv, many goggles, air units, vistas etc) can you not use the trick i use on my non firmware updated fpv? basically i just let it boot, connect to video and control while being inside or something similar to block the GPS? if the fpv cant find gps before the props start spinning, it will allow you to take off. once hovering, going to the goggles and selecting update home point then allows full operation even when near airports etc. i mean, what is the drone going to do? shut off while already flying? not for the fpv anyway. you just clear the warnings and fly. (btw, yes i follow regulations,RID, airspace etc rules) this is just something i stumbled across by accident actually.
I'm torn between the desire for a modern, AI autonomous drone and the unwillingness to own a smartphone.
Mine works, fine every time 🙂
FYI. I TOO have a cellphone that is used as a Voice-caller only. I have NO DATA PLAN! It was a nightmare to get
my NEO activated. Fortunately, I have OTHER DJI products such as the RC2 that came with my mini 4 pro and since that device
uses my Wifi on my LAN I WAS able to activate my NEO through the RC2 controller.
There should be a club, you and Luis Rossman can be the founding presidential members
I bought a DJI drone once, and I will never again. What a horrible UX. I get where they come from being a huge company needing to play nice with governments, but thanks, not for me. I still buy o3 air units from time to time, and even those, for whatever reason, need to be activated before use. Go figure.
I'm still looking for the dogs' reviews. Very interested in what they have to say.
Small thing? Nope, that's not disclosing required equipment for use. Sent it back! Alternatively, can you toss your barphone SIM into the Android tablet as a one-off? As for CAA regs & DJI - pack of numpties!
My barphone SIM has a plan with no data so that wouldn't work.
Thanks for being point man on the DJI Nano purchase, I can now scratch it of my Christmas list; far too much Big Brother and not enough Santa for my liking
Not only do they force you to use a smartphone, the experience is still degraded if you don't use iPhone specifically.
they are building our digital prison
Autel robotics drones are far better, plus if you dont know DJI constantly sends videos and photos of what your doing to themselves which is why it needs a cell connection.
i left the hobby...... why ? because my understanding was " Remote ID" required a cellular phone that needed to be connected to the internet. Is this true ?
Early on DJI required you to have a smartphone connected to your goggles for the Avata but it didn't need to have an internet connection. It simply used the GPS on the smartphone so it could broadcast the pilot's position in compliance with the RID rule.
Short answer NO if you are in the US. No internet connection is required. As far as I can tell remote ID is widely ignored in the US.
if you build a drone you wont have any of these issues, in the uk, i have flown the dji fpv without connecting my phone, fairly sure i've flown a mavic without a phone connected too. theirs not much point connecting the phone if your using the googles, you cant see it, and is another device using battery power...
I want to find out the brand of drones flying over New Jersey. NO ONE is concerned about them flying around !!!
Certainly not DJI 😂
Imagine having no phone and having a DJI drone. You would be screwed.
Funny I commented this on all channels at release of dji Neo and I was mocked
Hey Bruce, you think DJI is bad - wait till you find how that you can't operate your Australian government without a smartphone and on top of that the features aren't at all as described!
Thanks for the honest review.
Take it to New Jersey and join the drone formation flying team.
@@xjet you are a pro fpv pilot :)
DJI engineers becoming idiot regarding this small drone 😂
If you bought it you own it. Except for DJI. You actually rent it from them.
Thanks Bruce!
"because people in China say no" shirly you mean 'in America'?
🎯 Tho. You're bang on as usual.
DJI is saying "no".
DJI is Chinese.
Wait, control line model aircraft? So something attached to the ground with a human pivot?
Yet there are no regulations for kite photography, (in the UK anyway) apart from if you want to go over 60 mtrs with a camera on board.
Apple have been doing this for years, you never own an apple product, at least with DJI you can buy spare parts and repair it yourself
Insanity- doing the same thing over and over but expecting a different result.
I would love that little NEO. But value your input
Wait until there is a DJIphone
There's process where you can call the authority at the airport and ask if they would grant you an exemption and then JDI can unlock you for up to a year at a time. Still very frustrating especially if the geofencing is magnitudes more strict than the actual regulations.
Why should you have to prove to DJI that you have permission -- they sold the drone to you -- it's YOUR drone!
ive seen ppl get permission but were still unable to unlock the drone.
@@xjet The Nokias are still in use in a lot of third world countries
I bought DjI mini 2 after a year of flying and it’s out of warranty. The 5.8ghz got burned out and it’s not communicating with the RCn1 radio.😂
neo is a better option for you than for me, because you already have a controller
similar to 1st Avata.. why do you need to connect to your phone and have remote ID when flying indoor? I understand for flying outdoor but indoor???
I hear you've been flying off the east coast of America again Bruce. Nice
Damn, caught! :-)
Not so much DJI me thinks as the powers that be who would like to take DJI out of the market with insane rules. You know Xjet , it's almost like you may be getting old 😅. Same here.
I believe that growing old is better than the alternative 🙂
I was djied once. No more
From the tests I've seen it seemed like the autonomous mode doesnt follow any restrictions since there isnt any device with map data connected
the neo has a gps,
