    I have Xcel 25, 7, 5, and 2x barlow. I've never seen the chromatic abberation you describe. I will say the Xcel is very comfortable to use, forgiving of eye position, good contrast. I use them in a 90mm Mak and 8" Dob.

      Your barlow has APO glass in it, so the eyepiece shouldn't theoretically need APO as well right? That would add 1 more lens to absorb light.

    I have all the X-Cel series and I use them with a Sky watcher Virtuoso 90mm Mak and SvBony 80mm Doublet ED, and I don't have the Chromatic Aberration you saw. The 2.3mm on the 1250mm Mak looks awesome, even though it shouldn't due to the extreme magnification. The 7mm EP on the 80mm ED with 560mm focal length ( F7 ) is amazing with great contrast and clarity, no aberration, and very good details. I bought them 7 years ago when they were 1/2 the price they are selling for now.

    Hi! Great review!
    I bought this eyepiece before I even got my first telescope.
    I found that I haven’t noticed any chromatic aberration with this eyepiece neither in my 90mm refractor nor my 200mm reflector on the moon or Jupiter. Although when I tried to take a picture with the refractor it was noticeable.
    I have found that eyepieces like everything else is a touchy subject, and have found that all eyepieces have there strong and weak spots.
    Personally I like this eyepiece, but I don’t use it for everything.

    I bought the Xcel 7 mm & the Celestron Xcel 8-24mm together.
    The Zoom outperformed the "Prime" AT EVERY COMPARISION.
    The Zoom at 8 mm was at least 50% brighter than the Prime 7mm, while it had almost the same magnification. The Zoom's eye relief was also far better as was it's field of view.
    The reason for this is, that the telescope end of the Zoom (the lower part) has a MUCH larger lens aperture and hence has a much better light gathering aperture & field of view.
    The companies NEVER show photos of the lower part of the lens, else it would be obvious.
    Needless to say the prime was immediately returned.

    I recently bought and tested the Xcel 12mm eyepiece with my 10" Meade SCT, and had no problem with chromatic aberration. Maybe it's worse with the 7mm---that I couldn't say, but the 12mm had just a bit of color at the edges of Jupiter, and as you say in your video, eliminating chromatic aberration altogether is near impossible. I was very impressed with this eyepiece and highly recommend it. The only thing that beats it in my collection is the William Optics 7mm, which is a $200 plus eyepiece, and nearly impossible to find.

    Was very surprised to find only one of the lens elements is edge blackened.

    Synta is a mainland china company, though they probably have some operations in taiwan, as GSO taiwan has some operations in mainland china.
    But pretty much all synta products are made in china, and most GSO are made in taiwan.
    The synta division that owns celestron is technically based in Delware I believe, but that is just for legal reasons

    The X-Cel LX eyepieces aren't bad but just weren't my cup of tea, now the X-Cel LX 2x barlow actually surprised me, it's what I use paired with my 10mm Delos and 13mm apm xwa 100° eyepieces most the time. I can't speak for the 3x barlow but the 2x is very good, I prefer the smaller low profile and lightweight build rather than a large heavy barlow.

      @Ryan AstroMan Thanks for your input. I haven't tested the 2x Barlow lens from Celestron yet, but their 3 element apochromatic design looks very promising. Maybe I'll do a review in the future and compare it to the 2x Barlow from Tele Vue.

    First, thanks for sharing the review. I will give my humble opinion. It depends what you are looking for, if your main purpose is to use it for visual, then you will find this eyepiece no to bad. In my case I use it for planetary astrophotography and for me, I found it wonderful. I currently have X-CEL LX 9mm and 5mm. I will try to explain, I unscrew the bottom of the eyepiece and that's the one I use to attach it to my dslr with an adapter I made. And it gives me very, very good performance. I personally would not change it for any other.

    Had 9mm version and didn't like it. I use 3x Barlow instead of a different brand and the plossl eyepiece that came together with my 8SE. Much better views. The 9mm just wasn't sharp enough. I gave it away for free when I sold 8SE and got Edge 8HD instead. Still keeping the Barlow though.😊

      @tornadopakoštane1965 Thank you! I don't know if the other focal length X-Cel versions suffer from the same optical problemes, but assuming they do, then I would definitely go with the Hyperion Zoom eyepiece. Even though the AFOV is a bit narrower on the Hyperion, it has the superior optics and it offers a great compatibility with accessories and telescopes.

    Chromatic aberration in a Dob? Perhaps in a multiple lens telescope, yes. the photo you showed looks processed; and, yes they all look distorted at edges on planets like Jupiter. As far as Baader Hyperions go, I get annoying blackouts with the 13mm I have.
    It even happens with the 31mm Hyperion Aspheric. It does not happen with both my 9mm and 25mm Celestron X-Cel LX lenses. The 25mm is as good as any of my Televue lenses for eye relief and contrast.

    • @BogdanDamian
      @BogdanDamian  2 роки тому +2

      @skyemac8 Thank you for your input. Chromatic aberrations don't necessarily need to come from the telescope itself. The telescope together with an eyepieces represents a single optical system. In this optical system it does not matter where the lenses are for them to generate chromatic aberrations. An entry level refractor together with a premium eyepiece might show chromatic aberration because the objective lens of the telescope might not be up to the task. A premium apochromatic refractor used in combination with a cheap eyepiece might also show chromatic aberrations. Not because of the telescope's objective lens, but because of the poorly corrected eyepiece lenses.
      As for my tests, my dob doesn't have lenses but the used X-Cel LX does and the optical system as a whole showed chromatic aberrations. This means that by exclusion the optical errors came from the eyepiece.
      I haven't tested the 9mm and the 25mm X-Cel so I can't comment on those, but the 7mm version showed a considerable amount of chromatic aberrations during my tests.

    Nice Videos and thank you for the advise. My question: I have a Celestron Regal m2 80 ED for general purposes, observation and photography of the nature. How can I use at best its potential for astronomy? Invest on lens, or better a Barlow lens? I do not have pretensions, just to see the best I can with this

    • @BogdanDamian
      @BogdanDamian  2 роки тому +1

      @Giuliano Garconi The scope you have should be good for planetary and moon observations. It has a maximum theoretical magnification of 160x (aperture x2) and a focal length of 480mm. So in order to get the maximum theoretical magnification you will need a 3mm eyepiece. Since the 160x is only really possible on nights with perfect seeing conditions, I would rather get an eyepiece with a focal length of 4mm. For moon observations maybe a 7mm eyepiece and for wider views of the night sky maybe a 15mm eyepiece. Alternatively you could try out a zoom eyepiece as well. This way you will only need to carry one eyepiece with you.

    • @BogdanDamian
      @BogdanDamian  6 місяців тому +1

      @zackaryfrancis8363 Hi! Since a Newtonian reflector telescope doesn't use lenses to focus the light, it isn't susceptible to chromatic aberrations. Eyepieces on the other hand use lenses, which depending on the quality will present various degrees of chromatic aberrations. In my tests the 7mm X-Cel showed a significant amount of aberrations, which led me to believe that it's lenses aren't that good corrected.

    Hi Damian, I am writing from India. I needed your help. I just now bought a 2.3 mm X-cel LX lense for my Celestron Astromaster 130 EQ, but not able to see anything through it. Can you suggest how to solve this? Thank you for your assistance and help.

    • @BogdanDamian
      @BogdanDamian  10 місяців тому

      @aruniray Hi! I can think of two causes for your problem. First, your telescope might not be able to reach focus with that short focal length eyepiece. Try the eyepiece during daytime while pointing the telescope at something far away (not the sun!) and see if you can focus.
      My second idea is that the telescope can focus, but the finder isn't well aligned with the telescope and you just aren't able to find the target you are aiming the telescope at. In combination with the 2.3mm eyepiece you get a magnification of 282x which is a lot for the 130mm Astromaster. The field of view is very small and the target east to miss. Try to better align the finder scope with the telescope. You can do this during daytime as well. The target needs to be very far away.
      Keep also in mind that 282x is way past your telescope's maximum theoretical magnification so this might be part of the problem as well.
      Hope this helps. Let me know how it goes.

    • @BogdanDamian
      @BogdanDamian  2 роки тому +2

      AL Sutton Thank you! This was also my first thought, when I tried out the X-CEL with my Dob, but then I switched to my smaller telescope (4" Skymax Mak) and the chromatic aberrations were still there. Even after recollimating the Dob, the aberrations still persisted. So it had to be eyepiece. I'll try to get my hands on another eyepiece from the X-CEL LX series and check if other focal length versions also suffer from the same problems. Maybe it's just the 7mm that is especially susceptible to chromatic aberrations and the others are fine.

      @BogdanDamian  Рік тому

      @jarrettvasco7710 It really depends on what eyepieces you already have. But if you are starting from scratch, then I would recommend either a good zum eyepiece like the Hyperion Mark IV from Baader or you could get three fixed focal length eyepieces to cover high (6-9mm), mid (11-17mm) and low (21-35mm) magnifications. If money is no issue, then go for televue eyepieces. Explore Scientific is also very good and less expensive. Affordable still are Baader Hyperion eyepieces. Hope this helps.

I don't how much they cost in your region, but here in Germany they are 155 Euros a piece and for this kind of money they are definitely one of the best choices on the market. The 68° series from Explore Scientific offers comparable levels of image quality. So in my opinion it's a toss-up between these two regarding best mid-rangers. Getting the 12mm version is a good move, however I would also look at the 8mm. It will give you a 150x magnification. Something that the 200p definitely can handle.
      Considering a decent 2x Barlow lens before buying the next eyepiece might also be a good idea. Your 25mm will effectively become a 12.5mm with a 2x Barlow, thus eliminating the need for a dedicated 12mm eyepiece. I hope this helps. Clear skies!
