- FAANG companies are the dream for most software engineers, who would be down to spend a majority of their career at Google or Meta or Microsoft or Netflix. But to stay that long, you need to get promoted, since many companies have an "up-or-out" culture. While the process to move up the ranks (and increase compensation) isn't easy, it's very doable with some patience, hard work, and a little bit of luck. What if I don't care about the corporate bullshit like promotions and I only want to code?.. I don't want to try to become the best developer in that company and probably burn out. If I need more money, I just quit and get a new job. All the stress is not worth it.

Is Google still the best company? I feel like Sundar ruined it by turning it into a soulless stock price engine while taking a huge dump on UX, reliability, and basically stopped innovating completely. I wonder how that impacted the employees and culture.
