- My Onan QG 3600 LP generator is running poorly, thus video is to show a friend the problem.
****update****
Mechanically I never found anything wrong with the genset. What I determined is it’s just cold blooded, my issue gets worse when it’s colder out, BUT if I just let it run for a few minutes it warms up and runs perfectly. No magic fix, just let it warm up. Now that summer is here it starts and runs perfect right out if the gate.
Same problem here. I took it to Cummings, of course it ran like a champ for them. They said it gets starved for fuel because its at the end of the line after stove, heater etc. But with no other appliances on it still will act the same way. Some days it runs great others just like your video. So my plans to diagnose are 1-Replace regulator (did it - same problem). 2-Get a manometer and check gas pressure in the system when no flow and when appliances are on. 3-Shut off tank and back feed system using bbq 5 gallon tank and regulator. (I can take the hose off my fire pit and connect it up thru the auxiliary valve connection on the side of the RV.) 4-Buy a new hose and disconnect the existing hose from the regulator and run it directly to the generator.
I don't know if anyone even reads this, but I will keep documenting what I have done.
1. replaced regulator - no difference
2. back fed using bbq tank and hose. everything else worked but no change to the generator
3. got a manometer and checked pressure. 11 1/2 inches of water column. I was able to adjust the regulator up to 12 3/4 inches of water column. No change. I adjusted down to 11 inches of water column. No change. Put it back to 11 1/2 inches.
4. next buy a hose and run directly between regulator and generator.
So I didn't buy a hose. I decided to check my spark plug gap first. It was gapped at .030. That is the gap needed for a gas generator. Onan calls out for the propane generators to have a gap of .020. So I decreased the gap to .025. WHAT a difference, but still ran a tad rough. So I readjusted it to .020. Runs extremely smooth now. No pops and stumbling. Check your spark plug
Great troubleshooting sequence. I have the same gen, exactly the same symptoms as the original video. I will check the spark plug and adjust if needed. Will post the results. Thanks so much.
Yes! It was the spark plug gap for me as well. It was set to .30. I set it to .20 just like you did and BAM! It purrs like a kitten. Thanks man.
Mine did the same thing (I have the same unit). I replaced the Propane regulator at the propane tank - works like a champ now. I also changed the air filter as general maintenance.
I had the same problem . The dealership replaced a regulator and some sort of magneto something that’s was a couple hundred $ but the labour was g, s my batteries were getting old one was faulty replaced then . Now we good . 🎉 I must say these things are figgity with oil if u fill to much the unit will shut off . I made that problem for my self as well the unit has to be level run it for 30 min let it sit for couple hours then check your oil . Oil level should be no higher then half full any more 😢
Would have been nice to tell us what you found out was wrong. - in the description.
Fair…updated as requested
I also saw a video that if you have to much oil it will cut off ?
I have the same issue...it to is new..
Just don't know..I'll replace the regulator but my fridge seems
Fine..
Did you resolve the issue? What was it ?
I'm having same problem
Did you ever figure it out?
what have found is the gen set is coldblooded, if i just let it run for a few minutes it clears right up and runs fine. In the summer here in the desert it starts and runs good right off, in winter it needs a few minutes.
Please contact me I have the same problem with my generator
Problem solved. Spark plug gap was 030 , should be 0.020”. Adjusted gap, runs perfectly😅
I have the same gen and similiar problem
Hello did yo find the problema on your generators it was the a vacuim problema on the pancake regulador
What I found after chasing the issue for several weeks is that the genset is extremely cold blooded. In the summer it fires right up and runs perfectly, when it’s cold out it runs like crap for several minutes but once it warms up it’s all good.
Hope this helps!
@@dbottitaNO, How would that.
@@Chris-ux3cw How would what?
What was the issue??
I honestly have no idea, I checked everything and found no issues. Then, the damn thing just started running correctly and I’m not having a problem with it. It does run rough for a minute or two on first start, I think it just needs to warm up. 🤷♂️
@@dbottita I have the same generator and had troubles starting it this weekend after running it for two solid hours in very cold temps. A friend told me that the it can freeze up when used at cold temps. He was talking about the regulator, but I imagine it could happen in the generator as well. Mine wouldn't start for hours -- even after warming up. Finally after multiple times priming (maybe for too long) it stared and was running maybe too high but finally settled in to normal operation. Weird. If you learn anything else, I would be interested to know.
