I find it kind of silly when people try to be humble and nice about being popular in a high school so that others won’t feel bad. People that were bullied or weren’t part of the “cool kids” or people that were neither popular nor unpopular and just….there - they are honest (most of the time) about the struggles they had in school so why can’t people who were popular be honest!
Adrian comes off as a people pleaser so if she was popular she was not popular for the wrong reasons but just trying to get along with everybody. I just cannot imagine her any other way
Popular culture in church was a real thing. Watching certain families get treated better than other families by church leadership. The cool youth vs. the uncool youth. Phew, it sucked.
@@tfkdandsvkc I wouldn't say that. I was considered a pretty girl but I wasn't popular. People just saw me as a quiet girl. And all the popular kids weren't considered pretty.
It's fair to note it's not always the jocks and cheerleaders. Some ppl are popular solely because of who they are, their looks, they're funny, troublemakers are seen as fearless because they don't fear consequences, bullies get things thru intimidation which can be mislabeled as being powerful, etc.
Exactly! I knew football players & cheerleaders that weren't popular. Popularity is based on the percentage of the school that knows you and likes you. When people know you but you don't know them, that's popular.
Yes it does exist! Like Loni said people are more willing to let some (negative) things slide if a popular person does it vs those who aren’t so popular. The popular person could be a terrible person but people turn a blind eye or it’s quickly forgotten by their associates. It also goes in tandem with “pretty” privilege like Garcelle mentioned because some people are willing to put up with a lot more bullshit if the person is considered “attractive” as opposed to if they weren’t.
Yea I second what Adrienne said. I grew up in NYC and we didnt have those kinds of stuff in High School either....whenever ppl not from nyc talked about that stuff I would always picture like Save by the bell type of stuff or sweet valley high lol. Also, they didnt bully ppl to the level that you'd see on tv or hear about it from other cities cuz I felt like it was all about respect and ppl didnt want to test other ppl like that cuz they dont know who those ppl knew and who they would roll up with the next day to kick their ass.
An example of Popular privilege would be the selling out of Kylie lip kits when it dropped. The stuff wasn't consistent but so many of us bought it cause Kylie.
Same here, I was cool with everyone but I had my core friend group. So I wouldn't say I was popular but everyone was cool with me. If that makes sense.🤔☺️
I wanted to be too. I remember one of the girls saying, “she wanna be us so bad.” Years later, one of the girls admitted that they were horrible people. I co-signed and she was shocked. I don’t know what I was thinking.
I wasn't popular because I was best friends with the "popular" girl in my class. The irony. That taught me a valuable lesson that popularity ain't real.
My youngest daughter is popular among her friends, while her older sister didn’t have any friends in junior high, so my older daughter said “oh she’s gonna be that girl I hated in school!” Because she always associated being popular with being mean to other. That’s why I said that I will teach my youngest daughter, who is 7 now, to always use her popularity for the better, like inviting in a boy or girl who is alone or speaking up when someone’s bullied. It’s working already, a few days ago she told me that a boy in her class was teased because he is really short and she and another friend told the bully off and said he couldn’t play with them until he stopped and also told the teacher what was going on and it worked, he stopped teasing and now he behaves good with the rest of the group.
It absolutely exists. Beauty is something that is looked up to by probably the majority of people and so a pretty person can usually get away with a lot, and can have a lot of success in certain careers, or with men/women. Not that it’s right, but there’s kind of a pretty worship sometimes, especially celebrities
Adrienne nailed it. Popular Privilege 100% exists in the church. You married young? You’ve got lots of kids? You in the pastor’s inner circle or extended family? You have 100% popular privilege.
It’s when you think you have gained real trust & loyalty with a guy then all the sexual/intimate things you share is now exposed to the entire school. It’s like you are truly damaging the young lady. It’s truly devastating because it’s many lost generations who really needs to know the core values of becoming a great human being.
I was expecting this conversation to shift to them and their current life as famous people and whether they think the privilege they receive is warranted.
I was thinking that they would pivot to themselves as well. And I think the Privileges that they received due to promotion like free stuff and not having to wait online it's beneficial for the people giving them these privileges so I get why people do it but are they deserving of these privileges. No
Yes it is so true. I wasn't "popular", but I was well known. I went to a mostly white and Latino school so there was only one black kid per graduating class from 1996-2000. I was the class of 99. I was a Cheerleader ( I was not known as a pretty privilege type and I was gelling with my squad there only there girls in my grade and a couple under class-men on my squad that was ok with me), but I was also in the geeky area too. I just hung out with everyone. So I didn't get special treatment unless the school had to give it to me and the rest of the squad. But think about when celebrities get in trouble vs when ordinary people get in trouble. That's what bothers me.
Wish they would’ve transitioned popularity into the adult world instead of just high school because being popular especially in Hollywood/elite social groups def has its privileges
True. I went to a private school for Middle school and we had to wear uniforms. For girls, even your hair accessories had to come from the uniform store. Well the popular girls in our grade started wearing their personal hair accessories, one admin saw it and was like " oh! That's cute!" This made me think it wasn't a big deal so i started doing it. The same admin saw me and was like "that hair bow isn't uniform" i thought she was kidding so i gave a light laugh. She got annoyed and said "I'm serious, take it out"
I remember trying out for a musical and since I wasn't cute or had the body( I was fat) or had the "look"...they didn't cast me...they casted the popular European looking kids...even though I had tap, modern jazz and could hold a note as a tenor 🙄🙄😭
But popularity stems from actually being charismatic and outgoing. Being pretty =/= popularity Most popular kids aren’t even that attractive, they just have big personalities
I think it can go both ways. Being pretty makes it easier to be popular/ppl more receptive to letting you in/wanting to be associated w you but if you have a lit personality/social personality that can get you a pass into popularity/association as well.
I laughed at the CHEERS CHEERS CHEERS 🥂 😂 but I agree popular people get treated better. Also pretty people get better treatment than not so pretty people . That sucks though
It exist then and it still exists now. That's never gonna change. Everyone has a place in society. Animals do it too! It's a jungle out here that's REAL. XO
Right! It’s def there… I think a lot of students just aren’t aware if they aren’t into sports. My public school had a whole football field, track field, pool for the swim team, gym for basketball and volley ball team. I’m sure there was more that I just wasn’t aware of so I don’t know what she’s talking about lol
I feel like maybe she only went to elementary school and part of middle school. By the time she was a teenager (maybe 14), she was in 3LW, which could explain why she doesn't really have exposure to team sports.
How about workplace guys? Have anyone ever face this at workplace where someone would bully someone and when you complain about bully manager would say is nothing! And next time that bully person will do even worse and manager would still say is don’t worry that wont happen again and again bully will be racist to you and manager say isn’t racist is cultural differences?! Ffs you only wish these incompetent managers to get the same treatment or at least their kids goes through it to feel the same, and on top of that they will give power to the bully person to manage you. This world is sick
Absolutely. When I was in H.S the Basketball/Football/Cheerleader etc got better treatment. Like if they made championship or had a good year they got a steakhouse dinner however when our band had a great year at a competition we got little ceasers and it wasn’t even enough to feed everone in the band the principal said make it work 🤷♀️
I had the reverse I wasn't popular but my school wasn't the best school so the students who were doing well with grades will get the most notice however if you were in those students that did well were more susceptible to bullying because the popular kids thought that you would be better than them at least with grades. YES! And usually, the popular people don’t understand/recognize it because the lack of pop. privilege doesn’t affect them. It’s a sad cycle.
It’s worse seeing it at church!!
