The great thing about HoMM music 1-4 is that it encapsulates the air of classic fantasy that truly feels like a world away. Alot of modern fantasy osts are loud and booming and too much of a spectacle, they miss the quietness of what makes fantasy special.
Couldn't agree more. That matches my whole HoMM experience as well. A more peaceful sojourn into a fantasy world that feels like an escape not...another stressful experience lol
"Rough gem" is undeserved praise. The only good thing about the game (but that part was VERY good) was the beautiful music. Heroes 5 was so much better at everything except the music and yet that game too had great music.
@@somedudeok1451 I hate the art direction past Heroes IV, which is the main reason Heroes V is the last one I've played, and I haven't really played that one too much either. :(
I remember when i played HoMM IV as a kid, "Searching for a Dream" was such a beautiful song for me that i would go to the grass for it to play and I would just go to my window and gaze at the stars at night. This OST has a very special place in my heart.
This remind me of how Emilia Transform from a desperate peasant into a glorious queen, also how Elwin's love for Shaera transform him into a dependable man. iMO, heroes 4 has the best music and story.
HOMM4 had a great campaign. However, the way the heroes leveling system worked really discouraged me from doing skirmishes. I just went back to either 3 or 5 for those.
As I close my eyes to listen better... I can just see them, the dreams. Of those vast, seemingly endless plains; vivid in their simplicity and only riled up by the occasional birds flying earthward and other creatures of eternity's nature. And the only thing I want is to keep on wandering, and see more of it.
Heroes 4 are definitely unpolished gem with so much potential they could have been easily best HOMM game ever if someone would reboot it with biggest problem fixed such as: 1) Heroes would gain +1 attack and defence every 2 levels making combat not manatory skill. 2) Useless class would be rebooted into something better (such as beastmaster and beastlord speciality). 3) Each hero would have its unique speciality based on lore/previous heroes game and description. 4) More units. 5) More items, sets and option to sell items. 6) Fix of useless skill (such as summoning from nature to be level based). 7) More spells and effects that are and aren't already in game (e.g. protection from life, terror, protection from might, ice circle, freeze) and fixing of some spell abuse. Those are some changes I find HOMM4 needs.
Not many people know that the authors of a compilation album called "Complete Celt" are to be thanked for a good chunk of that soundtrack. Romero got little time to finished the most and he got many ready to use tunes there.
Yes he arranged the samples like a genius. You can often hear songs that use the same samples on tv or in other games from that time, and they mostly suck
TBH it's kind of incredible make a soundtrack this memorable with an extremely limited timeframe to work and having to use existing samples by necessity. Romero is remarkably skilled as a composer to make it sound this good in those circumstances.
@@Outshinedsg The incredible thing is he stole the whole demo track and claimed the credit for it. 4 times. That is incredible. It's quite quick to do that but it's not legal of course.

@@epoch933 This stems from HOMM3 where the gameplay could be much more min-maxed, competitive and specialized, especially the battles. HOMM3 battles were 2D sprites on a grid, where if you knew what you were doing you could beat surmounting odds by tactics like 1-stacking. This is absent in HOMM4 due to an urge to introduce 3D and an isometric view, which looks OK (although every humanoid moves like it's about to take a dump) but introduces a lot of chaos and unpredictability into the battles. One might say - yeah, that's how battles look like, chaotic. But if you're used to HOMM3 surgical precision of battles HOMM4 is quite a shocker. And then there are some questionable decisions like - you have to choose between types of creatures after lvl 1 - units can roam the map without a hero but cannot capture buildings - hero can roam the map on his own and is an active participant of the battle, which means, towards lategame, a stack of black dragons will just munch on your carefully raised, painstakingly developed spellcasting hero and you're fkd. But overall I fell in love with the game, perhaps thanks to this beautiful music.
