Seeing and hearing that baby scream while i fought filled me with an unexplainable feeling during that bossfight. It was possibly the biggest shellshock boss I've fought in a LOOOONG time, and don't get me wrong I've played earthbound and mother 3, and of course there are games built all upon shockfactor... But the baby... and the wailing.... I was not prepared.
It's amazing just how powerful the maternal/paternal instincts are in people. It's the same reason why emergency vehicle's sirens are the same pitch as a screaming newborn, most people can pull that sound out over many other loud noises
It makes me think this game was inspired by Berserk. I mean, the game screams of the "Dark Souls" genre of games, but the Christian/Catholic-esque overtones and monstrous designs remind me of the Holy See, the Apostles, and the God Hand from Berserk.
The High Wills is one of the greatest mysteries in this game. They seem to be the God of the world, yet religion seems to be based on martyrs and not gods. The Twisted One and the Penitent One are the greatest martyrs and thus, they're acknowledged as holy figures, but people doesn't talk much about the High Wills themselves. They talk a lot of The Miracle, but that is 'manifestation', an act if you will from the High Wills. The Dream is another one of those mysteries, seems to be the way the people refers to life in the world of Blasphemous, but i'm not so sure. Anyway, thanks for the video man. They're amazing and this game has a very deep lore, just like the soulsborne series.
Miracle seems to have a will of it's own I think the Custodian's religion is based on the Holy Trinity High Will/s - God Twisted One - Jesus The Miracle - Holy Spirit

That way it seems like the Miracle is not being 'controlled' by anything but itself. Also it would make sense to acknowledge a Holy Trinity in this game's lore, since it's heavily based on christianity. In that regard, God and Jesus are often refered as the same entity, yet different in very diffuse ways. And most of the time people refer to Jesus commandaments and not God's so it's a very similar situation compared to Cvstodia. Nice catch there

The thing with the Miracle is that if you look at it as punishment, you are disregarding the fact that the people of Cvstodia admires and elevates pain and sacrifice. Hence, being 'punished' with the Miracle is actually a blessing and then you're worthy of prayers and convents and churches and such. It is punishment in our standars, but it is a blessing in Blasphemous. A blessing that only manifest itself when you ask for pain, inconmensurable pain. Pain to ease your inner torments.

I heard a theory that said the Twisted One was Escribar himself. He was meant to be a messiah and instead became a corrupt dictator, hence first the higher entities tried to burn him and after the Miracle they created Mea Culpa.
Escrobars sword being made of gold is like the direct opposition to the penitent one whose sword is full of guilt while Escrobar's is gilted. Could just be a subtle pun, could be a direct comparison or I might just have read to much into it.
I think that's entirely intentional and much more than just a pun. The game manifests guilt as a gilded (guilt) substance -- so the constant theming around gold is extremely intentional throughout the entire plot. The Lady of the Charred visage, who wears a gold mask, her name was Aurea. Aurum is the Latin word for Gold. The game infuses these references all over the place.
Blasphemous might not pull in the views like soulsbourne I know I didn’t rush to click on a lore video for a game that I hadn’t heard of but since seeing your first video on it I’ve bought the game devoured the lore and I am happily waiting for more keep it up mate quality content like this will get picked up on eventually
This has to be one of the best games I have ever played. The game mechanics and combat were superb, artwork/music was nothing less than masterful and just the right amount of ambiguity relating to the storyline. One of the few games I enjoyed playing over and over again.
to me it's interesting how much of the important figures in Blasphemous are referred to by title and often lack names, such as the father/The Twisted One, the mother, the penitent one, perhaps this is also part of the suffering somehow?
Blasphemous: A setting full of people being gaslit into a sense of constant severe, but ultimately aimless, guilt, so that a select few of the most susceptible to this manipulation can become eternal torture victims to some amorphous entitiy of dubious intent. The entity's social engineering project is so effective that people interpret blind malignance as a miracle.
I have a question. In the lastest new ending. Where the Penitent One meets the high wills... There's a moment between him and The Twisted One.... The arches of the cathedral are the arches of the Mosque of Córdoba, which are the oldest part of said "cathedral", as christians took it during the reconquest and converted it. This game is a love letter to Andalucía in every single fucking aspect.
What do you think it means in the post-credits scene when Crisanta takes up the Mea Culpa? She said that her goals are complementary to the Penetent One's, yet they are also in conflict. Is she trying to bring about the next round of mass suffering? Or is she stepping up to become the next sacrifice?
Correct me if I'm wrong as I'm not nearly as much of an expert in this games lore as in others, but the sects that the Penetent One and her belong to are at odds. If the Penetent Ones goal is to alleviate the suffering of the land by becoming the next sacrifice, perhaps her goal is to also bring peace. The difference is that the Penetent Ones sacrifice will perpetuate the worship of the Miracle by becoming a martyr while she seeks to find a way to move the focus away from unnecessary suffering.

That begs the question. All individuality, or free will if you'd like, seems to be set aside. Perhaps even forbinden by the Miracle. Why follow its command? Is it hope for a better future? Love for mankind? Or greed as the martyrs (at least some) gain a tremendous amount of magical powers and worshippers, when they sacrifice their bodies and minds to the Miracle
Simple, and it's said constantly within the game's world and by its inhabitants; *penance,* the answer for human guilt in this world is suffering, we suffer for our shortcomings. There's no other motive, easing the deep spiritual pain with horrible physical pain as the Miracle itself forms literal manifestations of one's guilt and sin which in turn inflict unimaginable grief onto the guilty. One is to be tormented until they have served their penance and satisfied their sins, the Sorrowful Miracle does what it does and men will never understand its intentions, that's the point.
There was a prequel comic that you can probably find the PDF of online. Essentially, she prayed for pain to punish her, just like the Twisted One, and that turned the effigy she was beating herself with into the Mea Culpa sword. The fact that it’s a product of The Miracle is probably what gives it its protagonistic power.

I know I'm super late to this, but I've always felt like the Twisted One is closer to Adam than Jesus. (I more see the Penitent One as Jesus.) Not only are they both a "father" in their respective stories, but they also play a role in the punishment of humanity, dooming it to divine judgement and punishment. It was Jesus/the Penitent One who took all of that judgement onto himself and freed them.

Because of the lavish nature of the branch and history, it's often used in media, though there is a lot of things not even practitioners are aware of about it. As far as Blasphemous goes, I'd say the origin use of the title is different than why it is used in Catholicism.
