    I have lots of "toys", too. Now, when are we going to see you use your stuff? I have a '90 Ranger Custom and a '79 GMC "Heavy Half" I'm restoring, and drive a 52 M131A1 daily cause I'm in no hurry to get anywhere. I have no cameras or you would see my videos here. I tree farm here in Alabama on 50 acres and am between harvests so I have lots of time for my toys. Been interesting to see what you have and want to change on them, but where does the parts come from? Barter, or old money? Mine comes from good retirement plans and barter work (to be fair). I'm like you, I will not have an automatic transmission in anything I own, they fail and are usually not fixable at home where manuals are pretty easy to rebuild. I did a transaxle from a 74 VW last time, so simple. Good luck!

    You need dot numbers and a CDL. 10k gvw on any trailer is CDL. Any commercial vehicle must have dot numbers including pick-ups. You are over length in many states with that combo. You must remove your pick-up bed and register as a tractor to be over 60' long.

    • @j.c.smithprojects
      @j.c.smithprojects  5 років тому

      Not true.a 10,000 lbs trailer does not require a cdl in my state. also realize that it is legal to run any gvwr truck and trailer combination for personal use without a cdl. the exact definition of cdl is a "commercial drivers license". a cdl is required when your truck and or combination is being used for "commerce". the list of requirements to be compliant is staggering. whatever i do, it will be compliant.

    That is a really nice set up ! Will save you a lot of money transporting trucks and on top of that you can see more trucks going to and from getting them ! Great video.

      i am hoping it will save the aggravation of dealing with shippers who accept the the load and then cancel when they find a load that pays better. it is hard to find a reliable transporter (or any other person) these days.

    • @KoonTrucking
      @KoonTrucking 6 років тому

      J.C. SMITH PROJECTS I agree 100% ! I fight that same thing Daily with drivers not wanting to work and also other trucking companies that will book a load from us and then bail on it without calling because they found one that may pay a few dollars more.

      so many people today have no sense of pride and no shame. the same people who will drop your load without a second thought are the ones that come to you with their hands out when something is wrong in their life.

      J.C. SMITH PROJECTS i agree employees seem to have the attitude of “you can’t make it without me” or you owe me big time for working for you and I should get something extra.

    Seems that the tongue weight can be adjusted by the position of your front vehicle. Use that as a sliding weight. Airbags suck.

    • @j.c.smithprojects
      @j.c.smithprojects  5 років тому

      moving vehicles can help manipulate the weight but you cant always rely on that because sometimes you can only get the load on on way and make it fit. i dont have any trouble with air bags.

  • @kevinhornbuckle
    @kevinhornbuckle 6 років тому +1

    That's a good trailer. It won't take much to get rid of those rust spots. When you get a load on, put it on a scale and show us how the load distributes across the axles and the truck axles. I think your plan is solid. The air bag on the drive axle will give you a lot of the control you are looking for.

    • @j.c.smithprojects
      @j.c.smithprojects  6 років тому +2

      i plan to scale it empty and loaded...the air bags will make it easier to level the truck and in turn transfer the weigh to the right place.

    Hope all the calculations work out for you.
    I agree having your own means of transporting is the way to go. Granted I only have a smaller single car trailer and 3/4 ton truck but it's saved me a LOT of hassles AND money.
    Heck I've actually made some money over the years hauling vehicles that were broke down or 'projects' for other people.

    • @j.c.smithprojects

      hopefully the theory and reality are the same. it will all depend on if i can get the trucks situated on the trailer just right.

    Congrats JC, Good to see you and that fella found a number you both could live with, When I saw the trailer on the stream looked pretty damn good and hardly used so you can't beat that. Sounds like you have this thought out well and you should be able to get a few videos about the upgrades between the truck and trailer. I bet your going to have a little bit of ants in the pants about the anticipation of getting on the road for that first trip and hauling the first couple trucks back with sop you can see how well it will do and how the planning brings it together. I can't see the set up not working from what you have mentioned should work pretty good IMHO.

    Looks good to me...easy to load & off load...l agree about weight...this looks like it will haul all the imports you can fit on there...maybe on the next video you can show the other axles you have...l agree about keeping the same tire size & l'd put that spare on front axle driver side before it rots out from riding

    • @j.c.smithprojects

      you are right ....use the spare before it dry rots and becomes land fill. i realized i have 5 of the heavier 17.5" tires on another trailer that i need to upgrade to a heavier rating. i may use those on this trailer and buy the new ones for the higher gvwr trailer.

    i wasnt aware that distribution mattered legally. im studying for the CDL test here in RI and everything ive ever read and been told is that what matters is the registered GVWR of the truck and trailer.

    • @j.c.smithprojects
      @j.c.smithprojects  6 років тому +2

      that is very disappointing...i guarantee if you go across a set of scales and are overweight on any axles, you will learn all about it very quickly and your wallet will be light just as fast when you pay the fines. they should be teaching about the weight rating of each axle and the overall combined gross weight of the truck and trailer. that is one of the biggest reasons you will see a sliding fifth wheel's on road tractors.

    • @blakerugg
      @blakerugg 6 років тому

      maybe i just havent gotten that far yet. i know in RI i dont think we have a functional weigh station, though the troopers do have the plate scales.

      i realized i have a set of 5 17.5 wheels and tires here already. they are on another trailer that i want to put new tires on. the tires are about half tread and are getting some age on them. it needs the capacity of the 17.5 load range....this one does not. those tires will be perfect on this trailer and will last a very long time since i wont be getting close to their capacity.

    Something is bothering me. I know you can set me straight. Don't you have a flatbed truck with a dovetail behind the rear axle? I remember you hauling slab wood with it at the beginning of this year or the end of '17. Much earlier, I think you showed it with one or two pretty big trucks on the flatbed and dovetail. Am I remembering right? If you haven't sold it, is it too expensive to run on one of these "go fetch 'em" trips? Modify this trailer to hitch to it and you could fetch up to four trucks at a time! You do what you want, I know you will, just like I would! I am just curious, did that truck figure in your plans and if so how?

    • @j.c.smithprojects
      @j.c.smithprojects  6 років тому +1

      i still have the freightliner. it can carry one truck on the bed. i can put a trailer behind it and put another truck on it but the problem is weight and power. the freightliner is heavy and not overly powerful. it is best suited for short trips up to a couple hours each way. it only gets about 6-7 mpg. i can use the dodge pulling that trailer with 2 trucks on it and be more comfortable, have more power and get between 9 and 10 mpg loaded.
