    As someone who doesn’t learn from reading manuals or anything else, or rather, has issues focusing on the reading and retaining it, this video was great. I have both versions of vast and the expansions and I’ve learned as much as I can on my own and through play through a with my wife. This video was a great overview of the game and served as a great way to get started. Thanks for this. I’m really excited for the role specific videos so that I can gain some clarity on a few things that didn’t make sense in the rules, (which could just be me over thinking). Leder games customer support sent me the link to this so kudos to you guys!!!

    This videos are essential to understand what is one of the most complex yet rewarding games i've run into. The format is easy to understand, and can be shared with players ahead of game day so that they can learn the game at their own pace and delve into it at their leisure. Language is clear and concise yet always friendly and enjoyable . Fntastic content and contribution, very glad the resource is out there so i can tackle this beast of a game more frequently. many Kudos to the Quackalope crew for a beautifully shot and produced series.

    Hi guys, thanks making this! I loved getting to see all the components, beautiful game. I’m a big fan of Vast TCC and recently taught it to friends, even making a couple amateur overview/first turn videos to assist with the teach. Totally get the struggle of presenting an overview without diving into the weeds of each role. I think you guys did a pretty good job, but I think a quick touch on each role probably would give a better impression of the game overall. If I didn’t already know Vast this video wouldn’t have helped me understand how the game plays/feels all that much, since the interactivity of the roles is the main appeal of Vast imo. A little more on the basic mechanics of each role would be helpful. A lot of the general terms would probably make more sense via quick examples of what each player role can do. This can be done without going over every rule and exception. Don’t mean to come across overly critical, and appreciate your efforts! Only suggesting a few things because you asked :) Looking forward to the rest of this series!

      Hey! Sorry for the slow reply - I normally respond on my phone but I felt this comment needed me to be able to reference it while I typed on the computer! The overview was a hard one to film and your criticism is 100% correct. I told Jan as I was editing that we need to change the order filmed in next time - to avoid the problem you noticed. We filmed this first and then we did the character ones - if we had done them first and then came back to the overview I feel like we would have talked about the game dynamics / character roles more fluidly. I may do a quick 3-5 min character overview video to fill this gap if needed - not sure yet! Thank you for the time and thoughtful criticism - stay connected!

      Quackalope No worries at all, and thanks for responding! I respect the humility. I think a short roles overview would be a nice addition to your series if you guys get around to it. There’s certainly no easy way to teach a game like this :) Hope the rest of the filming goes well!

    I liked the format of having an overview with specific videos for each role. I've watched a number of the different role videos, and will likely watch all of them except for the ones related to the expansion. I've never played Vast, but I think your videos have helped me prepare for my first game, at least to be familiar enough to play without being completely intimidated by it.
    Since you've asked for feedback though, there is one thing I found problematic with this one and all of the other Vast: The Mysterious Manor videos. I'm not sure the music added anything to the presentation. For me, the opposite was true. At times it was quiet enough and created a bit of a mood, but often it was louder and distracting enough that it caused me to lose focus on what you were saying. If I could have turned it off, I would have. Sorry, but you asked.
    Overall though, these were great, and I will check out some of your other videos. Thanks.

    • @Quackalope
      @Quackalope 5 років тому +1

      Hey! Thank so much for checking out the video - I am glad they have been helpful :)
      I appreciate the feedback - music is a tricky balancing act - trying to get it subtle enough that it adds to the mood without taking your attention away is not easy! Sometimes we have done well - and at times we don’t quite hit it correctly. It also sounds different on various speakers and environments.
      Personally I find the music helps me focus / stay tuned on the info and in the video - but I will improve how I balance it out.

      @@Quackalope I know what you're saying about different systems sounding differently. I've been trying to make music for a while (and now videos) and struggle tremendously with translation from my main device to others. For reference, I was listening to your videos on a home theatre system. I think what may have made this particular music difficult to analyze was the volume variances between different sections. It might seem perfect in one part, but then overwhelm in another part. Just IMO of course. Everyone is different, so I wouldn't be surprised if someone else had the complete opposite reaction. Anyway, these were a valuable resource and helped me play my first game last night. Great work.

      @@NatureSoundsBC I think you are 100% correct on the changing levels (I try to scale them back at times - but I need to find a better system to equalize them all down) - I really appreciate the feedback and I am so glad we helped you get it to the table - that is the whole point!

    Hey there! Thanks for making this video. Here's one correction.
    @5:10 - There is no such term as an "empty space" (unlike in Vast:TCC!). There's "empty," which just means "contains no pieces." So for example, an empty tile just means "a tile with no pieces on it." A crypt is "a square space on the map without a tile," and a tile can either be Dark or Lit based on its side. Thus, you could have an empty Dark tile, which is a Dark tile with no pieces on it, or an empty Lit tile (like the Blood tile you talked about).
    Hope that helps!

    • @Quackalope
      @Quackalope 5 років тому

      Thank you for watching and taking the time to make the correction! We tried to make sure we defined all the areas well - but it was a poor use of words to say empty at that point!

    As an overview, it was good. Vast is a pretty difficult game to teach, and even explain its concept as a game. Like, you can't tell people it's an area control, engine building, deck building, worker placement, or whatever (for people who are already into boardgames). Being someone to introduce it to people requires you to know pretty much everything about it, but I think the best way to present it is to just give one role to a person and explain that and play the game. It gets clearer once you dive in. I tried a few combinations solo, on the original, before attempting to play it with my brother.
    One suggestion I might add to future How to play videos is this: after the setup have a section in which the game has already moved on, maybe half-way through, and explain further concepts, tackle the possibilities for the players/roles. Maybe it can help visualize the game better. It might not have been ideal for this, though, but perhaps it's something that makes sense to you guys and you can consider it based on the game.

    • @Quackalope
      @Quackalope 5 років тому +2

      Hey! Thanks for the feedback :) Vast is a juggling match - we have 7 more videos on the way each breaking down the characters specifically - so we tried to avoided going into their mechanics to much in this video.
      However - next time we film a video like this we will shoot the overview as the last part of the sequence - so things tie together a little bit more! I think you are right and this video could have done more to highlights the roles and types of gameplay you can experience in Vast - giving a bit more of an overview to the whole game. However - I do think the other videos touch on those elements quite a bit :)
      Stay tuned! I would like to hear your thoughts on the whole series as they roll out!

    Nice positioning of the camera to keep things interesting. Get to see components, and you guys. Also nice to see you are talking to each other than just the camera, but when you are explaining something, you should direct that towards the viewer.
    One problem with your overview on the goals of each group is that you only mention what their goal would be IF all characters were being used in a single game. Objectives change when elements are not present. This wasn't made clear, and is important since I doubt many people are able to play the full complement of player count. I used to be able to play 4 player games, but given how life requires change, people have moved I have at most 3 players (including myself) at the best of times.
    I already know the previous Vast game from the creator's tutorial, so I know that objectives change when certain groups aren't in play. I guess this will be further explained in detail when you begin teaching each different group.
