I really like your videos and your recipes. One positive aspect is that you have ingredients that I can find in Europe - some of the American videos I've watched have things I can't find here. I also like that you put the recipe in the description and on brew father. This is helpful. I think I'll try this one. Again, thank you
I just have to say this: i started brewing with extract kits two months ago. In search for information i stumbled upon lots of valuable videos and people across the internet. Last week i tried my first All Grain Brew. It´s a saison (i think and hope) mashed in a bucket with some kettle elements fitted in. The beer is looking great and it seems i have found my perfect hobby (i turned 50 yo and my hobbies tend to be palpable, useful and fun. All this just to say thank you David for making brewing sound so funny and simple. Your videos drove me to this hobby and i cannot thank you enough for the knowledge you share. Cheers!
Last IPA I added 90 g whirlpool hops, no bags. Gave it a good whirlpool like you always suggest and no pump stuck. And previously I have had lots of problems with much less hop turb. And I would love tu put my hands on those yeast. Cheers David, Great video as always!
The grainfather came in yesterday, gave it the cleaning as last video. I understand the towels now XD I mainly just need to wait a bit longer for the fluid to make its way back to the pump. Also bought a longer hose for it, bout 3 m. Been watching so much close ups of the thing that it seemed so small unpacking, lol But i have to say, because of these vids it feels like i have it for longer then just one day. Thanks for that :) Tomorrow 1st brewday!
Thank you David, yet another great video! I noticed that grainfather's recirculation silicon hose fits to thrumometer perfectly so you might not need to purchase additional hose for that.
David Heath I see, I meant mash recirculation arm silicon hose. So one end on thrumometer is attached to cf chiller hose and the end is connected to mash recirc. hose. :)
Hi David. Thought I'd let you know that I brewed my first ever home brew batch based on this method and recipe. Only difference was I swapped Hallertau blanc and ahtanum for citra as I like Citra and couldnt get hold of the other two. Couldn't be happier with it! Great video and thanks!
Back again David. Hope all is well. I have another attempt of this beer in the fermenter (day 3). Do I need to rack? Some people say yes, some no. Maybe a video topic for you... ll take your word on it anyway. Thanks
Thanks for another smashing video. It must feel a bit repetitive for you making these and going over the same steps but I learn a new detail every time and very much appreciate it! Would like to see something regarding beer clarity. Seems to be another hotly contested area that could do with some of that David Heath level-headed commentary.
+HappyDeux Some of it is repetitive but I want to ensure that a new person can pick a video and get the right advice and also reinforce it for regulars. I try to add new things where I can of course :) I think many find new points like you and this is my intention. Beer clarity is certainly a topic that I can cover :)
Great Video, and thank you so much for all the help by watching your videos. What is your opinion on Whirlfloc, as I find it very difficult to get hold of real Irish moss here in South Africa? I have ordered all the ingredients (had to substitute a few), and Saturday is brew day. Kind regards
I thought using kveik would speed up my neipa thus preserve hop aroma. It seems to have worked nicely. I prefer saisons but my friends love my kveik neipas
David Heath Homebrew great. It would be cool to see a video of your bottles, kegs, taps and things like that. Ive been interested to know what you have in bottles and kegs
Great video David! So when candied sugar is added to the boil (after you stir it a little with wort) would it help to boil and dissolve it fully ahead of time or does it dissolve pretty readily when added to the boil? I'm afraid of it burning to the bottom of the kettle. My GF should arrive any time and I have you to blame 🙂 Also, what does the 4K HD mean in many of your titles?
Thanks Keven , glad you enjoyed it. Candi sugar will dissolve fully after a short time in the boil. It really is best practise to sit it in boiled wort first for a short time and give it a stir to get that process starting before it hits the GF bottom. Add it to your GF in a location that is away from the pump and then give it a stir on the bottom until you feel nothing at the bottom. 4K HD is the resolution of the video. I shoot and publish in 4k :)
Looks like a great recipe. Couple of questions - the onscreen recipe doesn't include Amarillo hops but they are included in the text below the video. Which is correct - Amarillo or no Amarillo? Also, do you have the %AA figures for the hops you used? I'll be using leaf hops not pellets. I realise you may not have the figures for a brew you did years ago, so if not then is there a general rule of thumb for conversion from pellet weight to leaf weight that'll give a reasonable approximation? Thanks in advance
Sorry for the late reply. I have updated the recipe now. Thank you for pointing this out :) The Amarillo was added and it seems most preferred this , so I updated the recipe with it it and this is where this mistake occurred.
Great video David. I am trying to source a strainer that you put over the overflow inlet but the ones I can see on ebay are all too shallow in depth. Please can you confirm where to purchase one of the right size.
Hi David, I got my ingredients for a couple of brews through, this hoppy ale being the first in a day or two. I have one question with regards to hops. I got some Brewer's gold through and the packet indicates 4% Alpha which seems low for a bittering hop (not that i am basing this on much education-just looking at other hops' percentages) Is this a standard Alpha rating for BG hops? I'm wondering if i need to scale it up if there is a big difference. What was the Alpha rating for your hops in this brew. I know they can vary from season and region to the next. Thanks
+Tom Ford The brewers gold I used was 4.2% alpha. Its usually around the 4%. Normal for the type. I wouldn't worry about the difference, its very minor.
so pretty similar then. Now i am more confused though, I found your recipe on the GF site and there it states 8AA-is this not the same thing? Why the difference in number?
+Tom Ford Hmm, that must of been an error of transfer. Sadly right now the database there is not taking changes. I will change it when its back up fully.
Hi David - Can you confirm mash and sparging water volumes that you used in this recipe please. Also you do not use a hop spider or hop bag at all - is that right ? Thanks Nick
+Nick Boddington Sure no problem. I used the connect app on my phone and it advised me to use 9.9L strike water and 7L sparge water. No, if you whirlpool then there is no need to use a hop spider or bag. Though, both do make clean up abit less messy!!
Please allow me to answer (I asked David the same question on Facebook). No, you need to keep an eye on the bitterness, Just multiplying gives you too much bitterness. You could take a look at my scaled version of the Hoppy Summer Ale (not brewed yet!) at brew.grainfather.com/recipes/14269 > I changed the hopamounts to get bitterness back to 40 something like the original.
You will find this to be a hoppy light easy drinking ale. It has the classic American hops with their citrus and tropical fruit flavours along side the floral spice of European hops.
Well David, got home from the brew shop and noticed I got 5 lbs and not 5+ oz. of wheat.Looks more like a hefeweison now. wonder how its gonna turn out using the hops listed?lol, gonna be a big surprise.
I like hop flavor but the steepest bitterness taste is sometimes too much. Maybe this kind of sulfate to chloride ratio would nicely balance it even though it is pretty much the opposite what is recommend

+A Caneca Cheia Yes whirlpooling really is the trick for a problem free pump on any system. Glad to hear that you enjoyed the video :)
Thanks a lot mate ! Im just starting my first brew and your video help me a lotsss!!!!!

Awesome to hear Michael, I bet that would work very well :)
@@DavidHeathHomebrew it really did! Lovely and bitter, still citrusy and refreshing. 😎
Great :)

Hi Michael, I only do secondary these days with fruit and for long term conditioning of beers. This is the way these days
Thank you for these wonderful beer recipes and for sharing your expertise. May I ask any potential substitute for M36 yeast ? Thanks
Thank you. Fermentis S04 is not quite the same but it will work well 🍻🍻🍻
WOW great video. that's a keeper! I am putting in an order right now! Thx for the video... Cheers
Glad you liked it Bruce :)
Great video very informative
Thank you, much appreciated :)
Hi David great video mate 1 hell of a fast working yest there , cheers Ivan
Thank you, yes this kveik is insane!

Many thanks Charl. Whirlfloc has similar properties :)
hoping to go allgrain end of month. your vids are great. def going to buy grainfather but still novice at brewing at.moment.
Great, it sure is the way to go :)
If you love your beer it's definitely worth the investment! Even your 'bad' beers are good with the GF!
Another cracking video David thanks!
+steakandchips2k Glad you enjoyed it :)
Its great you have a wild kveik connection. Have you done a video about pitching temps, temp increase, etc? That would be very helpful
Yes. I think ive covered everything kveik now. There is a kveik playlist :)
I thought using kveik would speed up my neipa thus preserve hop aroma. It seems to have worked nicely. I prefer saisons but my friends love my kveik neipas
David Heath Homebrew ill check out your other videos for my temp questions. Thanks
Yes, sure is fast. To preserve hop area more try pressure fermentation. Nice boost :) I have videos about this on the channel.
David Heath Homebrew great. It would be cool to see a video of your bottles, kegs, taps and things like that. Ive been interested to know what you have in bottles and kegs
great video Dave, cheers!
Thank you :)
Hello David!!
What's the difference between this recipe of summer ale or session IPA ?
Thanks 👍
They are very different beers in terms of flavour.
Nice one David cheers nice job
+Beanham Home Brew Thank you, I am glad you enjoyed it :)
I see you've replaced Thor again with a pair of gloves!
I think he's going to be jealous :)
Nice video again David, TY

Great video David. I am trying to source a strainer that you put over the overflow inlet but the ones I can see on ebay are all too shallow in depth. Please can you confirm where to purchase one of the right size.
Glad you enjoyed the video Mark :) If you search for "large sink strainer" on ebay that will show you this type pretty fast.
What are the disadvantages of the Grain Father? Would you rather recommend a HERMS system?
I prefer all in one systems these days instead of HERMS. The main disadvantage now of the GF is the price and the out of date specification.
How much time did you sparge? Or was it all in the video? Great video btw
Hi, this was brewed some time ago but usually around 30 mins :)
Hi David. Why two additions of Cascade @ 15 minutes? Is it a typo? Thanks for the videos!
Ops...I have updated the recipe now. All is 100% now.

That's fine, as long as i am good to go with my 4% BG hops I'm a happy chap. Thanks
+Tom Ford All good Tom, brew away :)
So the clumping of the yeast is part of the fermentation process?
Sure is. Also known as flocculation.
Hi David - Can you confirm mash and sparging water volumes that you used in this recipe please. Also you do not use a hop spider or hop bag at all - is that right ?

David Heath Thanks for that. If I wanted to do a full 23 litre brew would I just multiply the amounts by 23/10.?
Please allow me to answer (I asked David the same question on Facebook). No, you need to keep an eye on the bitterness, Just multiplying gives you too much bitterness. You could take a look at my scaled version of the Hoppy Summer Ale (not brewed yet!) at brew.grainfather.com/recipes/14269 > I changed the hopamounts to get bitterness back to 40 something like the original.
A bit of a general question for you, assuming you mill your own grains, what setting do you tend to use for the crush?
+Wild Boar Brewing I use a Credit card sized gap mostly.
Did anyone made this Hoppy Summer Ale, what are the comments about taste and other?
You will find this to be a hoppy light easy drinking ale. It has the classic American hops with their citrus and tropical fruit flavours along side the floral spice of European hops.

+Ron Carl Hah yup that will for sure be a different beer!
What kind of water profile would you recommend David for this hoppy style?
Personally I use Randy Moshers IPA profile for all hoppy styles. I shared this in my NEIPA guide ;)
@@DavidHeathHomebrew oh that's curious! Gonna give it a try also. And as always thank you so much!
No problem, its a great profile :)
I like hop flavor but the steepest bitterness taste is sometimes too much. Maybe this kind of sulfate to chloride ratio would nicely balance it even though it is pretty much the opposite what is recommend
Yes, its a different type of profile but I really enjoy the end result. Mr Mosher is a genius :)
Kveik is awesome. What do you use for isolating the temperature probe attached to the fermenter?
+E e Hi, thats plumbers putty. Very accurate temperature using this.
Thanks! It looks great. Been looking for a better alternative to my tape.
David Heath Does the putty set hard? Do you replace it each brew?
What fining agent do you use before bottling out of interest, David?
On this one I used this:- www.brouwland.com/en/our-products/brewing/brewing-adjuncts/clarifiers/d/biersol-brewferm-100-ml#.WSZjxDOB31I
hi what would be the easiest program to use for a beginner ie beer Smith, brewers friend etc
victor castle Try the free of charge Grainfather recipe tools:- brew.grainfather.com
Do you reckon you could run a small microbrewery with a bar with one of these?
With a Grainfather? Sure. There are people doing just that already.
David Heath awesome
Is all that crystal to maintain body?
Its abit of everything really...body, colour , flavour.
Thank you for these wonderful beer recipes and for sharing your expertise. May I ask any potential substitute for M36 yeast ? Thanks
Thank you. Fermentis S04 is not quite the same but it will work well 🍻🍻🍻
