Mel, if the leaves of the specific tree have not changed color yet, have the kids predict what color they will change to. Also have them research what determines the color the leaves will turn, as well as the process.
It takes 40 gallons of sap to make 1 gallon of syrup. Maple syrup can only be made in North Eastern North America. This includes as far south as Pennsylvania and as far west as Ontario. The top North East section of North America is known as the maple belt and it’s where all of the world’s maple syrup is produced. Luckily here in New York, we are in this maple belt. If you don’t live in this area, you probably still have maple trees but not the type that can be tapped. Unfortunately, you’ll have to buy your maple syrup at a store.
There are two things that will make you strip where you stand, and red ants are the top one. Been there done that in my back yard lol😂😂 the other one has a couple country songs written about it.
The homestead is looking great as time passes and y'all keep improvements on the property in the woods by clearing paths and keeping them maintained the wildlife will use them too. This will help you Gary with hunting and keeping a eye on what's happening on your property. Learn what animals are by the tracks they make too. Next spring look for Red Maple trees. The wood is great for grilling hamburgers and chicken. Just cutting the small limbs like 1 or 2 inches in diameter and 2 inches long. When you get your charcoal ready to cook add 3 or 4 pieces of water soaked wood into the coals and let it smoke into the meat. Taste great.
You both are great parents and teaching then real life!!! They are going to appreciate it all whether they like it at that time or not. Keeping it real is going to make them great adults. ❤❤😊😊
I've known some.people tap the birch tree and make syrup from that but not same flavour as maple . The sugar maples are the most beautiful colour in fall ...lots of reds 🍁
Those dang fire ants are no joke! Here, in S.E. Alabama, their nests will pop up overnight. You have to be on the constant lookout for things that want to hurt you. 😩
Make your own wood stain from the hulls of the black walnuts. They need to be black not green, and wear gloves. Break them up, put them in a jar and cover with water and then wait a few weeks. You can make it as light or dark as you want by adjusting the hulls to water ratio
The plants that you are going to cut back for next years garden, will you be covering them from frost and snow? Anything you can save is for the best. You guys are so amazing and doing such sn amazing job with your children. Little Abe is a mini-me of Gary. Between Gary and Mel Abe is learning so much. Just to think he was so little when y'all moved there. And now he is learning and doing so much. There is nothing worse then being attacked by ants. They sting hurt so bad😢😢. I hope Gary is doing okay and all that. 😂😂. Funny not funny!!!! Take care guys. 🧑🦳🌵🏜️👍🇺🇲💕
"mini-me" yes. As i watch Abe, my mind always reflects upon a young Gary. Gary is one proud Dad, cause he said so on so many vlogs. and, I am so proud of Gary.
The further south ya get in the country, the tougher it is to make a good quality syrup. Up here in Western NY, it takes anywhere from 40- 55 gallons of sap to make a gallon of syrup.
Any maple tree will make maple syrup but hard maples are the best. A good idea is to take a ribbon or spray paint and mark the bigger maple trees now rather than trying to figure out if this tree a maple or not in the spring when their leaves are off. God Bless from your Canadian Friend.
Speaking of ants, when I lived on Maui for 6 months, a friend Of mine was bitten by 27 fire ants. She went into anaphylactic shock. Her eyes rolled back in her head, lips turned purple, and she stopped breathing, all in a matter of about 10 minutes. Praise God I know how to do CPR, so she came back. I hope someone on the 41.36 knows how to do CPR or will learn to do it. It's not that hard to learn CPR, and you never know when you may need it. I'm so glad it didn't happen to Gary.
Good morning Guy’s! Cool that you all did a nature walk! I Love my maple trees. Dad tapped trees growing up & it takes gallons of tap to make a lil syrup. It is a lot of work that’s why Maple syrup is so expensive! Off grid Jay & Jen on here do a lot of syrup🙏🙏🙏Blessing’s
on average, here in Western NY, anywhere from 40-55 gallons of sap to make a gallon of syrup. lot depends on early/mid/late season and the current freeze thaw cycles which both affect the quality of the sap. the farther south in the country one goes, the tougher it is to make a quality syrup.
When I was a teenager a friend and I were out picking blackberries when we got into red ants. Thankfully, there was a swimming hole nearby and we ran for it. I feel sorry for you because those things really sting!
In Kentucky we have a few different types of maple. The most popular are water maple and sugar maple. Sugar maples are the ones you tap. You will recognize those in the fall by their brilliant colors of yellow orange and red. They are almost your typical tree shape, whereas other maples can to spread out parallel to the ground.
I think it's the silver or white sugar maple trees is what they tap for syrup. I don't think all maples are for syrup. Acorns you can eat parts. Black walnuts are very expensive. That's good to learn what trees, plants you have on your property.
I haven't seen any further updates on the injured goat. How is she doing? Was she able to fully recover and function normally? Thank you for all your efforts to help this poor creature with her injury.
If you're ever in Vermont in the fall, you have to try their maple creamies. Then if you're inclined to make it yourself, my neice figured it out, you can make it at home. It is so good🍦
Morning guys! Oh my red ants are the worse, I have in my front yard, back yard. Gary doing the garden stomp would have been funny to see! LOL I know it wouldn't feel funny Gary sorry dude.
it takes a long time to boil maple surap so it dosent burn , if you have enough sugar maples and right equiment you can set up permant vacume lines to the trees to a holding tank, only draw back is the lines interfer in easy hunting on the property.
Once you collect a quantity of raw maple sap you then have to boil/render it down and the more you do boil it down it concentrates the sugar content. There are certain types of gadgets ( I don't know what these are actually called) that you use to determine the sugar content you will have to do your research but it takes a lot of maple sap and a lot of boiling to get good quality syrup. If you take the time and patience you will not only have fun but also wind up with ...... some remarkable good quality maple syrup. Get those waffles and pancakes ready!!! Me southern AZ.
You need sugar maples to get good syrup. If you have sumac not sure which one is not poison you cut branch and push out pith (middle part) and you have a tube you can use to hang bucket on and let sap drip into bucket. It is always spring that you gather it w hen the (March in Wisconsin) sap starts r unning and you can gather it.
I get bit every time I step outside!! I can’t even see the little buggers that’s doing it. They’re tiny flying insects that can sting through jeans. I wish there was a pill/shot we can get that’ll repel insects looking for a free meal! I found that some perfumes attract bees like crazy! Does anyone have any recommendations for what helps repel flying insects, flies, fleas, ticks, etc. in the yard? I do take an allergy pill every morning that helps with allergies and itchy eyes. I see you both itchy eyes lol. But everyone is different. Allergy pills have no effect on my daughter. Her doctor gives her an allergy injection once-twice a year and that does help her.
Mel, if the leaves of the specific tree have not changed color yet, have the kids predict what color they will change to. Also have them research what determines the color the leaves will turn, as well as the process.
I may well be wrong, but I think it's sap from sugar maples used for syrup. But you also need to keep bugs out of the sap collected too.
The Mud Room it is Looks Great 👍

I think gardening should be a class in schools

I laugh as well when things are stressful Mel. I get it!! It’s not about being insensitive at all. It’s a coping mechanism for me. I get it ! ❤

Perfect homeschool morning! This is why you made the big move.

"Off grid with Jay n Jen" make maple syrup from the maple trees they have on their property. Wasn't sure yall had heard of their channel. ❤
I hate being bit by ants! We have tiny biting ants! They are horrible!
They hurt when they bite! They make blisters on me when they bite. Gnats are another one that makes welts all over me…

The best maple for tapping sap for maple syrup is the sugar maple 🍁 (acer saccharum) it takes 40 gallons of sap for one gallon of syrup 😋
When I was a teenager a friend and I were out picking blackberries when we got into red ants. Thankfully, there was a swimming hole nearby and we ran for it. I feel sorry for you because those things really sting!

I don't believe we are not at the right Altitude
I think it takes about 35 gallons of sap to make 1 gallon of syrup. a lot of work goes into making maple syrup. I have watched it being made.
Sugar maples for maple syrup
You so funny Gary. I know that wasn’t funny. The way you explained it.
Hey you all
You can only tap maples in northeastern states
I was wondering how do u know that ur kids are doing school work when ur outside.
💜💜💜
I think you missed putting some flashing between the house and ledger board 0n yourfront porch deck? Or did i miss something?
💚💛💚💛💚
Do you have to follow a state approved home schooling plan?
Maybe spray your shoes or boots down before doing yard work? I would think the insects wouldn’t be attracted to that .
Sugar maples
😊

Hi good morning, Maple Syrup trumps Tim’s honey. 😅😂🤣😜. Y’all should do some bee hives. This is such a beautiful time of year. Enjoy ❤🎉
Silver maple isn't the best for syrup. At least in pa. It's not the best
